Funny story about this beer (or a version of it)

I won a big beer pool last year and someone sent me a Barrel Aged People's Porter. Unfortunately that beer is known to have some infection issues, which results in high carbonation in the bottle and a sour taste. Not good. This can vary from bottle to bottle or whatever, so it's not always known beforehand.

Anyway, we're popping some bottles one night and I go to the cellar and grab this one. Only thing on the table is a lighter so I grab it to pop to cap off and the moment I touch the lighter to the edge of the cap the thing shoots off with a pop like a gun going off and hits me square in the cheekbone. Left a C-shaped ridged cut in my face that bled for 20 minutes.

I laughed it off and took some pictures. Sent an email to Foothill's to let them know and they apologized and sent me a bottle of Barrel Aged Sexual Chocolate. Nice gesture.

Bwah! Imo try and get some free beer that way...

Love Prairie Bomb. We just started getting it in our market too.

I did get that bottle they sent, but I have so much beer already, I wasn't needing anything. Coincidentally I'm currently wearing a Deschutes The Abyss t shirt they sent me free once after I sent them a complimentary email just praising the 2010 Abyss (which has gone downhill in subsequent years.)

I found it in Craft Beer Cellar up in upstate NY. Finally able to buy some Bell's and see what they're all about. Also saw some other stuff I'll buy later this week. Probably nab one of the Goose Island sours.

Prairie Bomb was fantastic.

Anyway, I'm currently drinking one of these:

Pretty nice. Wish I had bought a can when I was at the Red Sox-Mets game back in August. Glad I was able to come across this again and try it.

Picked up a couple Bomb on my way home from work tonight and I've got one in the glass right now. Bell's is a good brewery. Two Hearted is a solid IPA for everyday drinking. The GI sours are ok. Used to be great but the brewers for that project left and started Penrose brewing (which looks amazing. Had 1 sour so far and it blew me away) The GI sisters though are pretty expensive for what you're getting.

Bomb was fantastic. Bought some more Prairie the other night.

freaking delicious. Just wish I didn't have to leave NJ just to get their shit. Now I have to check out the rest of Prairie's stuff.

along with a few other things:
Dogfish Head Pennsylvania Tuxedo (pretty good)
Crooked Stave St. Bretta (Spring) (gotta check out their other shit, man that was good)
Sierra Nevada Snowpack (kinda annoyed they have two of their year rounds included (Pale Ale and Torpedo), as good as they are. Coffee Stout is awesome and should get its own six pack.)

haven't tried yet:
North Coast Old Stock Ale
Maine Beer A Tiny Beautiful Something

Prairie is brewed in Oklahoma. I'm surprised you guys are getting it all over the Country already.

I've been getting it in NY. It's not available in NJ.

I've had hits and misses from Prairie, so I choose what I buy carefully.

Crooked Stave is a great brewery. St. Bretta was probably about average in terms of what Ive had from them. I've had some of the really rare releases, limited stuff, and just about all of the regular lineup (we don't get them in WA though) and the regular old Surette from about 2013 was by far my favorite. The balance of malt, tartness, their signature yeast note, and brett character was absolutely perfect. The later bottles where they changed the recipe to fit the season weren't as good IMO.

Old Stock is a beer that benefits from some age, much like Sierra Nevada Bigfoot does. Unlike Bigfoot though, Old Stock is very sweet and malty but loses a bit of the richness over a year or two that I appreciate. Bigfoot, give that bitch 10 years before you drink it. I've got bottles back to 1999 in the cellar.

I'm finishing a 2014 bottle of Goose Island Bourbon County Stout. I'm a long time drinker of this beer and followed every edition and variation, but this is disappointing. Only a year old and already lost the rich bourbon and chocolate notes that make it special. It has given way to some umami/sweet soy sauce flavors, which aren't uncommon for stouts aged much longer than this one, but shouldn't be present in a 1 year old BCBS.

Added a touch of vanilla extract and a pinch of cinnamon to give something interesting to it. I've experimented with some french press additions to this beer and some are really outstanding. Toast your own coconut flakes and press for 20 minutes in 2/3 bottle, then add the remaining 1/3 to the glass to drink. It's a very close 2014 Bourbon County Proprietor's variant without the secondary market price.

Good, albeit a bit boozy. Definitely want to see how this does with a little age. Same goes for the Higher Math (their 20th anniversary beer).

Here's my haul from Black Friday:

I like the regular BCBS better this year than last year's but it's still a little drier/oakier than I prefer. 2010 still reigns supreme for me. The coffee version is outstanding again but will fade quickly, and I'm really disappointed in the Bourbon County barleywine this year. They've used those barrels too many times and the bourbon just doesn't translate into the beer.

Nava, do yourself a favor. Got a french press at home? Pick up a few ounces of raw dried coconut flakes, no sugar added. Toast em in a dry pan til your entire house smells amazing. Add them to the press and pour in about 2/3 bottle of BCBS. Let it sit for about 30 minutes then press and pour. Add in the other 1/3 of the bottle for carb and balance and have yourself the best $10 bottle of 2013 Proprietor's Bourbon County ever.

Just finished a Surly Abrasive Double IPA and have moved onto my nightcap:

Don't have a French press, but I should buy one now just to fuck around with beer. That sounds awesome.
