Old laptops are ideal for running Linux... throw a SSD in it and install a lightweight distro of your choice. It will be like buying a new Laptop, as even a 6-7 year old laptop will be pretty quick.

Been using an Acer (had my doubts about liking it so I went cheap) Chromebook for my web surfing needs when at home for the last 2 years and still really like it. If this one was to shit the bed I would, and will, buy another one in a heartbeat. It's not great for too much offline stuff but, if you're only wanting something for browsing the internet, they're more than adequate.

I have a Toshiba touchbook pc and like it. It's really small, slim and light but I have to have a keyboard at home for pwning peeps on the SportsHoopla.
Then, when the kids are bugging me, I flip the keyboard back and they use it with me as a tablet.

I bought it new for about half price on Ebay. I got it and it didn't work. So, I called Toshiba and they mailed me a new battery and chord. Now it works great.

thats crazzzzzzzy

You know I'm a cheap fuck. But for my office I spend a lot and buy the best stuff...big triple monitors and the fastest box, etc. But at home, with the little kids spilling shit all over and I'm just messin' around, why waste money on good stuff? A couple hunnerd on some deal or a restored machine and toss it in trash when it slips off the couch and cracks.
The tablet PC really makes sense at home though, IMO. Typing without a keyboard is insane. Why would anyone put up with a tablet? But it's nice to have that ability on rare occasion.

Typing on a good size tablet is easy. Go down to best buy and try out a iPad Air or surface, typing is a breeze. Just got to watch out for auto correct. Seriously I'm in a chair on the patio watching the grand daughter and her friend play while holding holding my tablet in one hand and typing with the other, so easy.

I just can't deal with that. I'm on the computer all day so I type fast. Typing with one hand and hold the f'ing thing with the other seems crazy because it would take 4X longer.

I have a lot of people to insult and antagonize on the SportsHoopla. I can't waste an entire hand!

Laptop ties you down. You can't just walk around with it, like you can with a tablet. I can post while on the can, outside, or anywhere that gives me a Internet connection . Love it.

Tablet PC is the same though. The Toshiba I'm on now isn't any thicker than an Ipad. You just tend not to use the virtual keyboard when a real one is available. However, when takin' a shit? Yeah, I'd guess pad-mode is best then.

I never actually taken my tablet to the can with me, just pointing out you can go anywhere with it. Don't you have to set your Toshiba down on something to type with a real keyboard?

No, its a "tablet PC." It works as a tablet when you fold the cover over and as a laptop when you open the cover. It uses Window 8.1 and works like any tablet.
So, it's both and really doesn't weigh more than an Ipad and it's not any thicker either.

I like a good size tablet. Find the iPad Air just right. Own a old surface 2 , HP Stream, also a iPad mini. Next year the iPad gets larger. Still tablets have limitations.

If you want a laptop just for surfing, just keep checking around at Amazon, Walmart, eBay, best buy, someone will have a laptop for dirt cheap at some point. Just a matter of seeing it, before they have sold them.
How do you like the Surface Pro? I think I'm going to get one of those once they make a couple more models of it.
