The Edge browser would only let me import bookmarks from IE, not Firefox or Opera. You can change the default search engine from Bing to your choice by going to Settings (the three dots in the upper right), Advanced Settings. First open up the home page of the search engine you want use and in advanced settings click the down arrow on the search setting and select <Add new>. A list will appear where you select the search page previously opened. You can also make it the default there.

Kinda of a non-techie...running 7 pro on home laptop and I've been seeing the 10 upgrade option but have yet to pull the trigger...what will be better with 10?

Oddly on the work computer running on 7 home and not seeing the 10 upgrade logo on it.

Who's installing Windows 10 when available later this month? | Page 7 | SportsHoopla Sports Forums

first post has info for that which I bolded. As for what is better, well depends on what you're expecting I guess. It is slightly faster than 7 but it will take some getting use to because of all the new stuff. There is no media center anymore but their are new movie and photo apps.

I'm really liking the Edge browser, seems to be a little more responsive than IE. Funny that PC World's biggest complaint was the lack of add ons for it. Add ons do more harm than good in my opinion though.

Does Windows 10 track everything you do or just within the Microsoft programs itself like Outlook?

You can turn off Cortana and all its tracking. If you upgrade from a local account you don't get pestered to get an online MS account unless you click on one the "apps". Leave them alone and use 3rd party programs and you'll do fine...I still use Lightning calendar in Thunderbird so I don't need the online calendar MS is pushing.

Damn, I read that wrong the first time. Yes you'll sign in the way as on Windows 8. If you are signing in with an Outlook or Gmail account you're online all the time. You can however change that and get to a local logon (this shuts down access to the MS store and Live tiles though).

I may have to switch over to a local login then. I have never been a fan of the tiles screen. Right now I use the same e-mail that I use for my XBOX Live account but that was only because it seemed to be the easiest way to get through the setup at the time.

You can turn off as many of the tiles as you like. I'm sure you can dismiss them all. Just right click over each and turn them off.

Not what I'd do, but then to each their own.

I have turned off all of their default live tiles and removed them. Only keep the apps I want quick access too and then I shrink them down so more fit on at once and I make my own groups to organize them in.

I think they struck a decent balance of usefulness for the tiles while not taking over the screen like they had before. Still feels a bit cumbersome to see the all apps, but that's just because I was used to flying around doing it in 8.1.

Finally have some time to explore....

I have two wired NICs and I can toggle one from Public to Private - great. The other NIC is stuck on Public (Unidentified network) and that's the f*cker I want on Private (with a static IP set). I probably cannot toggle because it's an Unidentified network. Absolutely Infuriating. Networking blows in Windows 10.

I edit two config files in Linux and I'm done in less than a minute.

edit: Ok found it - I had to name another IP on the LAN as a gateway. Without a gateway on static, it will remain public/Unidentified

I was going to say it shouldn't be listed as an unidentified network if the structure is setup correctly.

Samba works... the Linux side is stealth (no discovery) but man, what a convoluted way Microsoft has their networking set up.

Lets see if I can get the networked printers and print sever going.

I shouldn't have to name a gateway on a simple peer-to-peer.

Everything is working, except... after pulling the Product Key, I have a generic key.

Which means I will need to call Microsoft support if I want to have the option to do a fresh install.

Actually, I think I will verify that - fresh install coming up on a wiped HDD - maybe tomorrow. I suspect it checks the HWID and it may activate from a fresh install with the generic key. If not, c'est la vie.

It works great on home/small business setups though. The Home Group makes it a lot easier for sharing. Like I mentioned before you can also create a special hidden home user account that will effectively allow Linux users to access the home group share with one access instead of each share having to connected.

Printers on the network should be discovered automatically if they are fairly new and/or have drivers available either in Windows through the manufacturer. It is a pain to connect to shared printers on a PC...

I may try that KS. Logging into each share is a pain, but I don't do it very often, thankfully.

Printers (jet direct) and the print server (generic/LPR) were a piece of cake... No sharing involved - Linux uses CUPs and Windows uses it's own baked TCP/IP interface.
