All assistant coaches make a lot of money. There are quite a few making more than Texas'.

I haven't heard about them losing this perk. As to "they can afford to eat elsewhere", if that's the case then why aren't more schools doing this? Why is Texas doing this? Are those free lunches really something that can be abused? Aren't the student athletes already being fed?

Not sure why this cut is a big deal or even news, but I also don't get why Texas is doing it.

This is where I sit. Lot of University employees have to pay $10 for lunch. It looks bad, but it is not a huge issue.

Just win and it won't matter how many feathers the AD has ruffled.

One story said that he has ruffled some feathers of several big boosters. GOOD! They were getting way to big for their britches. You want to give money, fine, but no strings attached. We'll pass on your money if that's the case.

It doesn't work like that. The people who pay the freight get the special attentions and perks. That's true in athletic contributions or academic contributions. If the day ever comes when I don't get my phone calls returned or get some "enhanced" treatment when I ask for extra tickets I'll stop writing checks. My wife gives a shit load to the OU academic side of the university and she's treated like a queen. It's no different than taking care of your biggest customers when you are running a business. We do that all the time in our companies.

Patterson is running the athletic department like a franchise who reports to a rich owner. He is completely lost in how Universities work and rely on charitable contributions. Those big checks for football allow regular football earnings to trickle down to the minor sports. Seems to me those big checks aren't getting written as often. Why else would Patterson be penny pinching everything these days? What is all this income good for if we act like we are broke? That's my theory anyway.

The guy is a head case. His biggest problem is going to be if Charlie Strong doesn't start winning a lot of games by Year 3. All his cheesy behavior will come back to haunt him if the football program isn't turned around by then because the Horns fans will turn on him and take it out on "that SOB who doesn't know who he's messing with".

Is it possible he inherited some lax budgeting and is just trying to get healthy?

Is it the new stipend?

Texas athletes to get $4,310 this academic year thanks to NCAA rule changes that go into effect Saturday.

Maybe so, but wouldn't everybody be feeling the pain from that?

Patterson has a lot of faults, and some of them may indeed bring about his departure.

He needs to keep the money coming in, no doubt about it. While some BMD's may get their feathers ruffled, others may be okay with cutting some of the fat.

His biggest issue, imo, is the perception he's giving; Texas is not poor, and he shouldnt be creating 'issue' that there are money problems. In addition, his personality rubs almost everybody the wrong way, especially most Texans and exes. He is, at least outwardly, the antithesis of a Texan, in my opinion. And that pisses a lot of people off, apparently.

But he is right in looking down the road, at the freight train of expenses that are increasing drastically across the board.

I totally understand that, and your right to a point. I have no problems with tickets, and things like that. When your donors are getting involved with business decisions, it's time to put a stop to it.
