I would really want to know the logic in playing a clay tournament in late July/Early August as Rafa is doing?

Trying to get his confidence back most likely. Unfortunately, his confidence is not what is making him play worse. His failing physical prowess is.

Kudla and Isner the last Americans standing in Atlanta. I think this is Isner's tourney. Home crowd and all he should be able to beat this light field.

Federer already pulled out of Montreal which is one of the 2 biggest tuneup events before the Open. That is pretty disappointing to say the least.
glad to hear it.

he needs to maintain a top 4 ranking, but other than that, put every bit of energy into the majors now.

one of the great things about the atp rules allow for a player over 30 with his number of matches played to skip mandatory tournaments.

all of that said, the us open will be a tough one to win for him. best of 5 hitting backhands up around his ears is just not good for him. that backhand will always break down if any match goes more the 3 sets against top players. hope he can compete well at wimbledon again next year and ride that into the olympics.

Davydenko used to do that too.

I wish he was still a top player.

When was that rule first allowed?

Citi Open Men's Draw: Draws | Citi Open
Citi Open Women's Draw: Draws | Citi Open

Bank of West draw (Women's tourney): http://s3.amazonaws.com/ustaassets/assets/849/15/main_draw.pdf

For those of you into women's tennis, it is pretty clear Bank of West is the better tournament

That's surprising, because its worth less points.

But I went to the championship match from 2008 - 2011. There were always good players during the week, with many of the top 10 ranked players.

And past champions would be GS winners like Capriati; Clijsters; Davenport.

BTW, whatever happened to Anna Chakvetadze? I see she had injuries in 2011. But she was good in 2007, and why did she do worse in 2008, 2009?

Some interesting outcomes in the Citi.

Donald Young beats Haas in straight sets. He looks like he is in great shape these days. I guess he got sick of losing and now the off court work is finally starting to show.

Louisa Chirico spanks Heather Watson for her first win. I have been waiting for her to come on tour. She has a great all around game and the size/speed combo to be something special.

In the 18 and under Nationals at Kalamazoo, they are down to 16. The favorites (Tiafoe, Paul, Opelka, Fritz, Kozlov, Mmoh) are all still alive. This year is pretty special, as every one of those players besides Paul was a top five junior, and Paul just won French Open juniors. As always, winner gets a main-draw wild card.

It'll be interesting to see if the winner can take a match or two at New York.
