Mauer feasts on the Tigers pitching, like he has throughout his career.

That Jake Cave home run yesterday, though.... JEEzus!

Yeah Cave has some surprise pop and decent skills.

Got a lot that he needs to work on that shows why he’s only just now getting his first Mlb action.

But he’s a solid player

According to Bill James/Rob Neyer's CY predictor, the AL pitchers currently in contention for the CY are:

Kluber
Sale
Bauer
Verlander
Severino
Carrasco
Snell

I'd probably consider Kluber the front runner right now as long as his back holds out.

Sale and Bauer are probably out because of brittality.

Verlander is coasting on his lights-out April/May performance - but he's been fading for a while. 4.08 ERA since June 1, 4.78 since 7/15, and 5.57 in four August starts.

Severino might be falling faster than Verlander - 7.02 ERA since July 2nd.

Carrasco could be a dark horse as he's been charging - 9-2 with a 2.00 ERA since June 2nd.

Snell's another dark horse.

That HR to the center field mezzanine was close to as hard as I've seen a baseball hit. Right up there with some of Miguel Cabrera's gargantuan smashes.

Bauer is out. Prolly Sale unless he gets right real quick.

He's Chris Sale, that ain't happening.

Carrasco would have to get even better down the stretch I'd think. Could happen.

I think Verlander is in worse shape for the CY than Sale is.

So maybe it’s between Kluber, Carrasco and Snell.

Edwin Diaz. If he gets to 60 saves....is he CY Young 'worthy'?

If Zach Britton couldn't sniff the Top 3 in 2016 going 47-for-47 in saves with a 0.54 ERA, then no. Diaz is at 2.03 and has blown 4 saves.

His K-rate is sick, though.

someone that pitches 70 innings per season isn't the best pitcher

With all the arm injuries, it won't be too long before starting pitchers won't throw more than 140-150 innings a year - if that. Fifteen wins will be considered "awesome", but less important than WHIP/xFIP/K%. Closers might give way to 2-3 inning middle relief pitchers with 100mph fastballs. Five years from now....a Josh Hader could be your Cy Young winner. Some writers/stat-guys will just have to step up and break the "starting pitchers" are the only important pitchers theory.
