JD Martinez

Honorable mention to Jose and Mookie

But that Sox team is not far different than last season, and JD has elevated them to record setting levels

I'd like to also announce that I predicted JD Martinez would be the 2018 AL MVP playing for the Red Sox, last August while he was playing in Arizona

Thank you

I'm going with Mookie Betts ... some great players on that list (no sale on Sale though).

I think it'll be Mookie now that Trout has missed as many games as he has. JD would be 2nd on my list.

As good as J.D.'s been, I do think he's a bit behind Ramirez/Trout/Betts just because they provide baserunning and defensive value (though I don't think Martinez is a bad defender, he just mostly plays DH). Besides, Trout and Betts have pretty much been better offensively anyway and Ramirez isn't far off.

Betts: .352/.440/.668, .459 wOBA, 193 wRC+, 24 stolen bases (caught 3 times)
Trout: .309/.459/.624, .445 wOBA, 190 wRC+, 21 stolen bases (caught once)
Ramirez: .302/.411/.634, .430 wOBA, 175 wRC+ 27 stolen bases (caught 5 times)
Martinez: .333/.402/.663, .441 wOBA, 181 wRC+, 4 stolen bases (caught once)

Martinez has only played 393 innings in the outfield whereas not only have the other three played in the field for the majority of the season, but they rate as above average defenders (especially Betts and Ramirez, who are top 3 in UZR/150 and DRS at their positions). Ramirez and Betts are in the top 10 in stolen bases and Trout's just outside at 11th.

let's throw Bregman in there as well (.298/.399/.557, 165 wRC+, 7.0 WAR).

I think Martinez will win but wondering why Kris Davis isn't being mentioned?

because he's a merely good player

And there's a very good arguent to be made that he isn't the best player on his own team.
