Penny is out 3-4 weeks now which puts his status very much in question for week 1. Carson is clearly the #1 back in Seattle however running behind that terrible O-Line for a team that will likely be trailing in a number of games this year, does Carson have as much upside as people may think?

I loved him entering last season and before the injury, was showing flashes of real big time potential

This injury will allow him to leave Penny in the dust

Ideally he is the perfect 3rd back on my team, just because of the many factors you mentioned, but I think his upside is far greater than your typical 3rd back, like an Isiah Crowell type for example

no one spends a first round pick in a RB to not play him. Carson is a placeholder until Penny either takes the job, or proves he can't handle it. Seems like he's got a better shot at strong value the first few weeks now, than he did yesterday, but, at some point, it'll still be him vs Penny, you're taking your chances investing a pick in a guy that Seattle intended to replace

Carson is worth bumping up, but I'm weary of "Sea RB" regardless.
However, if Carson doesn't get bumped up ADP too much, and Penny falls enough, you might be looking at two nice value picks. Get them both at the 7/8 turn? 6/7 turn maybe?

Crowell is a good comparison.

We drafted early in one of my leagues and I currently have Chris Thompson and Chris Carson is a free agent. I like Thompson because of PPR but Carson is suddenly more intriguing.

Is Thompson really your worst player? I'd keep him and nab Carson and drop someone else if possible.

Isn't Thompson going to be out until Novemberish?

Nope, so far they haven’t indicated he won’t be ready to play at the start of the season, but likely be on a snap count.

I almost took Carson as no one was really interested in him or any of the other seahawk players except for Russell Wilson who went pretty quick. I ended up getting Doug Baldwin in a late round and Tyler Lockett very late.

Well, this isn't confusing...

Chris Thompson (leg) doesn't expect to be fully recovered until November.
Thompson avoided the active/PUP list but has been limited in training camp. It's a red flag he doesn't feel back to pre-injury form, but we haven’t seen any doubt over his Week 1 status. Thompson could need regular days off during the season to avoid setbacks. Aug 1 - 6:34 PM

So, he's not on the pup list, but he won't be fully recovered until November, but he seems likely to play in week one?

Yeah confusing. Maybe with Guice out the Redskins feel they need to use him, even if that means days off etc?:noidea:

It sounds to me like the Washington Redskins backfield should be someone else's problem this season.

I own Thompson in a couple dynasty leagues, so I’m crossing my fingers. Not touching a Redskin RB in a redraft league.

If you have Chris Carson available in free agency I would definitely recommend picking him up. Yes common knowledge would tell you that if you spend a first on a back you will use him but believe me I know the seahawks well enough that if Carson is playing very well they will say to hell with the plan lets run with whats working. Remember we signed Matt flynn and we thought he was gonna be the starter then russell wilson happened.

My only reservation with Carson is that he can be injury prone so I wouldnt invest in drafting him especially in an 8 man league but if you are in a deep league I would suggest grabbing him late or as a free agent and stash him

Let's be real about Carson for a moment..7th rounder who only was the starter for awhile last year because Rawls was hurt, and Lacy was a walrus. Yes technically he "won" the job, but the competition basically bowed out of the race halfway through.
4 games, not a single rushing TD, only one game with truly respectable rushing numbers, coming against the, at the time, utterly hopeless Niners. The only above average rushing D he faced was Tennessee and they embarrassed him. (Ironically his only score, a receiving TD, came that game, but dreadful 3.1 ypc)

He's an average talent, and he runs like it. If he didn't, if he truly "flashed", Seattle wouldn't have spent a #1 on Penny, simple as that. Now Penny may very well be a bust, that possibility is very real. But, Carson is not some great diamond in the rough that will keep them from giving Penny every chance to take the job.
Grab Carson off waivers, draft him very late, sure why not, just be prepared to toss him aside by week 3-4 when he's just a cuff

I grabbed Carson off the waiver wire because he was there. He and Thompson will serve as 4th RBs for me so it's not a huge deal if they fall flat. Ended up dropping my kicker for right now and will grab some random kicker before week 1 after the preseason plays out a little more.
