I think it is about time this thread gets started....

Coming FAs (‘18 salary)...

Pence (18.5M)
McCutchen (14.75M)
Hundley (2.5M)
Holland (1.75)

Contract Options (option/buyout)...

Bumgarner (12M/0)

Arbitration...

Will Smith (A4)
Sam Dyson (A3)
Joe Panik (A2)
Hunter Strickland (A2)
Gorkys Hernandez (A1)
Kelby Tomlinson (A1)
Josh Osich (A1)

Last Minor League Option in ‘18

Tomlinson
Williamson
Law
Pierce Johnson

And Fernandez will need to spend (I think) 30 days on the 25-man roster before he can be sent down.

Bum clearly has his option picked up. I think locking him up long term is the team’s “Plan B”, but I hope he gets traded.

Hundley will probably be back again, hopefully on just a 1-year deal.

Holland is making a case to stick around as well. IDK how much I'd like that, but the way he's incorporated himself into the clubhouse stands out. We'll see.

I think Tomlinson is a prime DFA candidate. As of right now, you can't justify keeping him on the 25-man roster. In fact Mac is probably the safest bet at this point, and I'll say I'm not even 100% certain he's safe.

Josh Osich is also in his final option year.

Big names that need to be added to the 40-man roster or risk being exposed to the Rule V draft:

Chris Shaw
Sam Wolff*
Tyler Rogers*
Tyler Cyr
Sandro Fabian
Mac Marshall
Melvin Adon
Rodolfo Martinez*

*Indicates prior Rule V eligibility.

Not too many tough decisions here, mostly because the Giants have already called up some of the guy who would have been eligible. Shaw is an easy call (may get added sooner). Duggar, Suarez and Black would have been eligible too.

Wolff will probably be added. Rogers is always in that middle ground, but if he hasn't been taken in the last two years, he probably won't ever.

Cyr was highly regarded last season, but had TJ. He's not a good enough player that a team will stash him for the year (a la Nick Burdi last season).

Rodolfo Martinez is still out of whack and not appealing.

The three toughest decisions will probably be Fabian, Marshall and Adon.

All three are quite talented. All three are in High-A, so not like they're too far away from the big leagues. All three have some serious red flags.

Fabian continues to be a statcat darling, just barreling up so many balls and looking in good in BP, but not translating at all to the field. He's quite baffling to many scouts. But a .600 OPS in the Cal League probably isn't going to tempt anyone, so he's probably safe.

Marshall has yet to have a healthy season, but this year (in limited time) has showed the major promise he had when he was drafted, a lefty with a plus fastball and changeup. His health risk is extreme and he still has just 115 innings under his belt since being drafted in 2015, so he's quite raw. But that hasn't stopped teams in the past. I could see a team stashing him in their Pen, limiting his innings and developing him in the bigs, though probably not too likely.

Adon is similar to Fernandez in a way. A truly special fastball, but very little feel otherwise. The Giants continue to try him in the rotation, but I could easily see a team selecting him and sticking him in the back of their bullpen as a long reliever.

I'd say that Shaw, Wolff and Adon are the most likely adds, and the Giants don't have to worry much about anyone else.

Shaw, if he is still in the org, is a no-brainer add.

Adon, as you said, is very similar to Fernandez, so he will probably be added just to prevent some team from taking a super-flyer on him.

Fabian is also in the high-ceiling category, but he really has yet to show ANYTHING on the field, so I think he can go unprotected.

I think Wolff and Marshall are both on the fence. Put a gun to my head, and I would say neither gets protected.

With Wolff, I could just see him swapping roster spots with Law as the resident RH reliever depth.

Maybe. But he doesn’t need to be added for the Rule V to achieve that. He isn’t kicking in any doors and his ceiling isn’t super high. Why would any team pick him?

I have a feeling he's going to be in the AFL this year (call it a hunch), which will expose him more. He's been a disaster in AA this year, but had great numbers last year in AA and AAA. Seems like a guy a team would take a gamble on, even just to see what he could do in Spring Training. The Giants have added worse in the past.

A few other Rule 5 candidates...

Camarena
Dobson
Arenado
Hinojosa
Luigi Rodriguez
Coonrod
Simpson
Knight
Beltre
Edie (OMG! I had no idea he has been around so long)

Arenado and Rodriguez are the top contenders from this list. Maybe Hinojosa.

Good possibilities to be dfa'd by November (if not in September): Herb, Okert and Osich. Miguel Gomez is getting close to that status as well. A defensively challenged player who cannot hit in AAA is in danger.

Except both Law and Johnson are pitching well in AAA. I think how they perform in AAA will go a long way as to where they are in November.

Cal is right, Fernandez needs to spend time on the active roster in 2019 or get sent back to the Rockies. However, will he be healthy enough to show anything in spring training, much less pitch in April?

I'd rather see the Giants pass on Pence and McCutchen. Hundley should be brought back but will his improved offensive numbers make him more enticing for a team willing to start him? Holland, I'm on the fence. Not bad enough to say no, but not good enough to keep, unless the price is low.

Dyson is borderline, to me, to tender. I want to see how he performs the rest of the year before being okay with him back in 2019. I think you are right on Tomlinson. His offensive numbers get worse every year.

This isn't a comprehensive list either (I missed a key guy). There's plenty others that probably don't need to be mentioned. LGH will probably have the full list.
I would, if I took the time to update it. I usually do that towards the end of September/early October. Right now, you all know more than I do (or at least as much). And I usually always miss a few.

Why is that? I thought spending time on the 60-day DL 'technically' counted
