The Raps dont want to rebuild if they dont have to. this gives them another shot to make the finals and roll the dice

They will have to rebuild. Ibaka isn't getting any better. Kawhi doesn't want to be there. What makes anyone think Kawhi will care? Green was getting less minutes on the Spurs last year. Lowry shrinks in big games. They may think there going for it but do you honestly think there in it to win it this year and there is a shot they do? I'm not buying it as of now. Hopefully got Raptors fans like yourself you are correct.

Raptors had the fifth-best defense in the NBA last year. They just added 2 very solid Defenders and got rid of one of their worst. Love this trade give the Raptors a good shot at getting to the finals this year and rolling the dice to see how it works out. If it doesn't we've already started the rebuild by dumping DeRozan salary. Holding on to most of our young studs and adding a solid veteran and Danny Green is the cherry on top.

You get it.

The only guy on the Raptors signed past 2020 is Delon. Lowry, Ibaka, JV etc. are all pretty much done here if/when Kawhi leaves anyway. I think the Raptors would probably try to upgrade on Lowry right now if there was a possibility out there.

All this trade did was trade two years of Demar and whatever potential Poeltl had for one year of Kawhi and Green. Everything beyond that is basically the same.

This is as no-brainer as can be for the Raptors.

This assumes that DeRozan has no trade value.

Kawhi's now in a tricky spot. Because in the CBA, they can fine you for sitting out games and training camp.

Also, you missed last season and are talking about missing another season. You'd have to have a medical excuse to miss a season. If that happens, he misses two consecutive years with an injury. I'd find it difficult to figure out how that's going to work as the NBA would presumably step in.

I like it for both sides, especially for Toronto. It doesn't matter to me that Kawhi says he has no desire to play in Toronto. The Raptors roster had run its course but were potentially gonna be locked into a good portion of it for many years to come. Getting Kawhi (and Green) makes them better this year and gives them a full year to convince Kawhi to change is mind. Worst case scenario is he decides to leave but then they have the added benefit of being able to do the a complete rebuild, which they wouldn't have had if DeRozan was still there. And they managed to keep OG Anunoby and other pieces and picks. There's really a no lose situation here for the Raptors. They did excellent here.

The Spurs did about as well as you could given the situation. Personally I would have preferred packages with younger players and lots of picks that Philly or Boston could have offered, but getting back an all star is still a nice return. I also liked Poeltl coming out of college and even though he didn't show much of anything his 1st year, he showed some life his 2nd. With the Spurs development system, its not hard to envision him really starting to blossom as well.

Trade Grades: A for the Raptors, B- for the Spurs

Say he sits out 6-8 games, the Raps decide to field offers and the Lakers are the only team interested in......it's gonna be a low ball offer. They just might jump at the offer.....

i agree somewhat but if they can't convince Kawhi to stick around quickly I believe trading him helps the rebuild quicker then just letting him go. Ask the Celtics who ripped off the Nets. Maybe they can convince them and hopefully for Raptors fans they can.

It all comes down to the context of how SA and Popovich view DEJOUNTE MURRAY.
if the SPURS are truly in the MURRAY-BUSINESS, similar to the way they were in the KAWHI-BUSINESS in 2012.

The Spurs realized in 2012 they had somebody special long before his stats and stature dramatically increased.
I think they view Murray the same way.

If that is true, Then this makes perfect sense for San Antonio.
They want the best possible scenario to reinforce winning ways with Murray.

But, if the future is not Dejounte Murray, then the Spurs probably could have done better.
Their brass and braintrust all seem to be in 100% agreement that Murray is the way to go.

I trust them.

If they expect that Murray is going to turn into an MVP level player because Kawhi Leonard turned into an MVP level player, then Pop should resign now because he has completely lost all sense.

That is the worst possible way to build your team.

I've been saying this.

Yup. We'll see how that works out when he gets fined for not showing up to camp, practices, games, etc..

If he uses a medical excuse, then that's two years straight that you've had the same injury and teams will then know he's one of two things:

1) Seriously injured which then diminishes his value
2) He was full of shit the whole time and the NBA would likely step in in some capacity.
