He'll also have access to recreational marijuana, lol. Not that it's a hard get in the NBA...

He can get that in Cali too.

Maybe it'll come down to which city has the best weed?

Not sure why people think taxes are ever part of these guys decisions. At that income level, there's nothing they can't afford in Canada, New York or California that they can anyplace else.

I can't remember a time where a player didn't go to a team because of the taxes

Kawhi Leonard turned down a $220 million dollar deal. I'm guessing maximizing his revenue isn't the highest priority for him.

People who talk about the tax rates for these guys are usually trying to make a political point rather than a basketball one.

Agree. For regular folks, taxes can be a pretty big deal. For folks at an NBA level salary...not so much.

Plus, if I'm not mistaken, they are taxed according to each state they play in, so they really only pay the higher tax rate for roughly half the season.

I think it's a win for both sides here. Toronto for years has been kind of at their ceiling and this opportunity gives them a shot to see if they can really make a move to the top or if they will have to rebuild. Spurs get an all-star in return and will allow Pop to be competitive in his last few years on the bench.

TORONTO RAPTORS Last 5 NBA draft picks

20,20,26,27,29

They won 58 games. They added Kawhi Leonard. It has been 3 years since they picked even at 20, yet alone lower.
They play in the most watered down Eastern conference in years.

I dont know why everyone is worried about that top 20 protection of the pick. That is just silly.
Is the 2018-19 Raptors, suddenly going to be a horrible team now??
the only way they beat boston is if Kawhi achieves greatness. We shall see. Though im not counting it out. Hes proven himself already.

I told you guys that Pop should trade Kawhi to China for Jimmer. I guess Toronto for Derozan is the next best thing.

They did if they can convince Kawhi to extend his contract, otherwise they gave up a solid player and other parts to at best lose in the finals and then need to start rebuilding.

This is the best news for the Lakers, they dont need to worry about giving up any young pieces to get Kahwi now, they can now package those to add a 3rd star.

Agreed.

Great news for the Lakers.

Not really a huge risk for Toronto, because they knew Lowry and DeRozan weren't good enough to seriously contend. They will take their shot this year as a serious threat to the Celtics (hell, they might even be favorites), then, if they can't resign Kawhi they will look to rebuild.

San Antonio will be pretty good next year, but I think low 50s wins is probably the ceiling. They lack the upside they used to have with Kawhi. Eventually they will need to start the rebuild in earnest.

This is why everyone needs to stop bitching about players being loyal. There's no real loyalty from the front office, so why should players be the only ones to have to show dedication to the franchise. Mind boggling.

Raptors had the fifth-best defense in the NBA last year. They just added 2 very solid Defenders and got rid of one of their worst. Love this trade give the Raptors a good shot at getting to the finals this year and rolling the dice to see how it works out. If it doesn't we've already started the rebuild by dumping DeRozan salary. Holding on to most of our young studs and adding a solid veteran and Danny Green is the cherry on top.

They have a really good young core, besides DeRozan and Aldridge.

DeJounte is gonna be an All-Star in a year or two. They got Derrick White, who seems to be a Spurs fan favorite as well, and he lit it up in the Summer League before getting hurt.

Not to mention guys like Chimetzie (sp?) Metu, Lonnie Walker and others. Poetl is only 22. They have some things to build on, at least.

What are the chances now that the Raptors try to trade Kawhi and getting rid of Derozan was a salary dump? I'd say it's very possible.

Im going to miss poertl. Guy is a great energy guy with huge upside. He will thrive under Pop.

This was all about this year. The Raptors are going for this year All In. It Kawhi wants to stay after spending a year in Toronto we can work it out if not the Raptors rebuild
