Definitely. But if he wasn't going to be traded to the Lakers, this is the next best outcome. I feel a lot better about the Lakers chances of getting him as an FA than I would if he had gone to Philly or Boston.

At least you're realistic and logical about this.

Although they didn't reach the NBA finals...has there ever been another #1 seeded team besides Toronto, that fired a COY winner for that season, and then also traded their superstar player about a month later??

Nope. But we also haven't seen a team like the Raptors continually have regular season success like Toronto and be a complete disaster in the playoffs.

TORONTO RAPTORS Last 5 NBA draft picks

20,20,26,27,29

They won 58 games. They added Kawhi Leonard. It has been 3 years since they picked even at 20, yet alone lower.
They play in the most watered down Eastern conference in years.

I dont know why everyone is worried about that top 20 protection of the pick. That is just silly.
Is the 2018-19 Raptors, suddenly going to be a horrible team now??

and seriously- if at the trade deadline its not working out- are the Sixers REALLY going to say no to a reasonable package if you want to recoup some assets?

Depends. If the reports that Philly is the only EC team that he would re-sign with are true, they would definitely do it.

But if they were true, I'd think Philly would have increased their bid. If they're not true, then it's just the same situation with a different team.

Same for the Lakers. If Toronto looks to trade him and wants the same package that the Spurs wanted, they should get the same answer.

Is Kawhi a big Drake fan? If so, Drake might be able to convince him to stay. I like the move by Toronto. It’s basically a move to get better, or start the rebuild. A lot of teams are in the mediocre hell that Toronto is in (everyone good but the dubs) where they aren’t bad enough to get lottery picks, but they aren’t good enough to realistically win a title. I wish the Bulls had balls like that, but the Bulls love the mediocre hell.

If he's going to be swayed by entertainment types, I don't think Toronto is going to win out over LA. Cold and taxes are a tough sell too, but Toronto is a beautiful city. Who knows, maybe he does stay. He's certainly a HUGE upgrade over Derozan.

Kawhi/Green for Derozan/Poetl/2019 1st (top 20 protected). Other than the pick, is that really better than losing Kawhi for nothing? Poeltl is a lumbering big, Derozan is an overpaid (27.7m for each of the next 3 seasons) mid-range shooter. Looks like a potential salary dump for Toronto at worst (if Kawhi leaves), as Green is an expiring contract.

Except DeRozan is not a superstar.

I don't think anyone is choosing DeRozan over a healthy Kawhi

There seem to be some upset Lakers fans today, but happy tomorrow?

Yeah, he's an all star (at least in the East) but definitely not a superstar.

Gotta say though, considering how superstar trades usually work out...the Spurs did better than I think most thought they could considering they were limiting who they'd deal with.

I expect DeRozan to be better in San Antonio under Pop's tutelage. He likely won't become a superstar, but I expect he'll improve a good bit.

Yeah, I heard that NBA players typically have one of two reactions to Toronto. They either "get it" and fall in love with the place...or they hate it and want out asap. There doesn't seem to be much middle ground.

DeRozan was one of those players who "got it".

Hopefully, for the Raptors, Kawhi is like DeRozan.

Hopefully, for the Lakers, he hates it.

One positive with Toronto...he'll have free healthcare. lol
