If I was the Mariners' GM, I don't think I'd make any major moves unless I felt it would help beyond 2018. While the Mariners could grab a wild card slot, the odds of them having a meaningful playoff run in an AL featuring the Astros, Red Sox, Yankees and Indians is pretty slim.

Dipoto has to do something. He either has to buy where they have a punchers chance or sell off guys like Paxton, Cruz and hell see what the Astros would give up for Pazo's or Diaz.

True, but not sure if that is a good thing with Mariners history. :)

Sell off? 18 games over .500 and you are suggesting a fire sale? Well, that's certainly thinking outside the box. Probably be the first time in MLB history that a team was 18 games .500 and threw in the towel.

I more or less just thought it was interesting. The schedule flow has definitely been different this year. Also a lot less games after the break. Makes every single one matter that much more

To be fair they don't throw in the towel when they are 18 games under and usually don't go for it when they are 18 games over. The stand pat mantra has reigned supreme during the trade deadline for this franchise.

They had a pretty soft schedule pre ASB, too.

A third of their games were against Texas, Detroit, ChiSox, KC, and Orioles, the five worst teams in the AL (including arguably the three worst teams in baseball). That is not the case post ASB.

On paper yeah. I honestly thought their June schedule would knock them back but it didn't. Most of the recent slide is due to the Rockies who are playing well right now and seem like a poor matchup for the M's regardless.

Teams can potentially look a lot different in August and September. The AL West looks like the most competitive division, with the NL West being up there as well. Obviously still series left the Yankees, Dodgers, Dbacks as well. Lower tier ones left against the White Sox, Padres and Orioles. But yeah those remaining Oakland and Astros games are massive.

Agreed- couldn't have said it better myself. I think most teams get hot and then cool or cold. Look at Houston, they were hot as hell and then hit a cool streak, the M's were rocking it and now hit a low point, the A's were sucking and now they're on the upswing. The only team I can think of that has been at the bottom of the barrel and hasn't had a "hot" streak is Baltimore, but Toronto is not too far off from that either. Problem with the Mariners is that they were lucky and were able to win those 1 or 2 run games thanks to Diaz and baseball luck. I think the M's are just a "better than average" team- not a post season contender.

Yeah, it happens... Yankees were hot then they lost 6 out of 9; Stroh's were hot like you mentioned and then lost 5 of 7; Indians lost 7 of 11 at one time... It happens to the best of them... Not going to panic... They've played above my expectations this season so why would I complain?

I'm not saying sell, though if they come to the conclusion that they can't make themselves good enough then that it is a viable option even with how many games they are above .500. They cannot keep with the status quo or it is just another wasted year in purgatory with no reenforcements in the farm system coming like the Yankees, Red Sox and Astros have had/have.

That's unfortunately how most of the Mariners Trade Deadlines go so that's always what I expect to happen until I'm proven wrong.

if the mariners can not trade cano....then they need to trade for a guy who can take his place...when they go to the playoffs.. and until he gets back

The entire AL is a soft schedule except NY, Boston, Houston, the Angels and A's.

Right. Even the winner of the central is a pure joke and won't be more than a speed bump in the post season.

Funny how you think including the Indians in that makes you sound smart.
