Not sure the best place for this but these are my thoughts as well pretty much

2018 NFL Preview: What are the Seahawks doing?

Wilson is undeniably great. He had a fantastic 2017 and if we didn’t shut our minds to a player on a non-playoff team being MVP, Wilson could have won the award. The Seahawks are slipping, but the clearest path back to the top is through their amazing quarterback.

Yet, the Seahawks seem to see it differently. I like Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, and general manager John Schneider too. They built a great championship team in Seattle. But as some of their stars have gotten older and left, they seem to be grasping at how to remain a contender. Their main focus this offseason seemed to be minimizing Wilson, the one advantage they still have, in favor of running the ball more. It’s confusing.

It's confusing why Seattle wants to start running the ball more efficiency and more often?

2012 - 3rd in yards, 1st in attempts 11-5 Divisional Round
2013 - 4th in yards, 2nd in attempts 13-3 Super Bowl Champs
2014 - 1st in yards, 2nd in attempts 12-4 NFC Champs
2015 - 3rd in yards, 3rd in attempts 10-6 Divisional Round
2016 - 25th in yards, 20th in attempts 10-5-1 Divisional Round
2017 - 23rd in yards, 20th in attempts 9-7 No playoffs

Pretty clear trend there. Why wouldn't you want to go back to what works? Shore up the O-line, get some TEs who can block, draft a RB, and make teams actually respect play action. Seattle's best pass play the last few years has been "The Scramble Drill".

It's not like they can't open up the playbook if they have to (and they probably will since the defense is rebuilding). Wilson has the ability to take over games if need be, but it seems wise to minimize the amount of time he spends running for his life if possible.

I disagree they've done things to minimize RW. They haven't added many shiny objects, but they have brought in a couple of really good blocking TEs to replace the 2 pretty bad ones they had the last few years, signed a starting RG, drafted OL heavy over the last few years, and put some resources toward improving the running game that has done nothing to help take some of the defensive focus off RW the past 2 seasons. A good red zone target is gone, but adding Brandon Marshall may help soften that blow some. Russell's career passing numbers are pretty darn good as they are anyway, and that's been without ever having a top quality receiving corps. He led the league in TD passes last year with zero running game and a terrible OL. Give him some blocking and a little ground game help, and I have a tough time seeing how that will minimize what he can do. I guess we'll see if it works.

Not exactly a surprise, but glad the matter is finally settled.

Vernon Davis will be happy to hear the news.

You willing to bet on that?

It's going to be close between them and Arizona. If giants can improve to at least seven wins, I think Was is last.

The main reason that worked was you had one of the all-time great defenses to keep scores in the teens so you could control the clock, just pound the ball, and let Wilson make a handful of huge plays.

The problem is that the LOB era Seahawks are now dead and odds are that you're not going to get the level of defense again. You might have a good defense but amazing defenses just don't have long shelf lives.

If you have a top tier QB it's simply a smarter move to build around the QB as it's easier to do and you'll have a larger window of success.

Instead it seems like the Seahawks are trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube when they should do what the Steelers did and transition from a steel curtain defense to being a more offensive oriented team.

Like I said in the Bell thread the fact is in today's NFL having a dominant running game isn't what wins you championships unless you back it up with amazing defenses. It's the QB and scheme that does and you just need a good enough running attack to make sure defenses have to play both the pass and run honestly.

I don't think I said they should go back to running the offense exactly how they did in 2013.

I'm suggesting that it makes sense they would do exactly what you said in that last sentence. Make sure defenses have to play both the pass and the run. They haven't had that luxury the last few seasons. It makes sense they would shore up the O-line to better protect Wilson, get some TEs that can actually block, and draft a RB to potentially end the musical chairs act they've had at the position the last few years.

2015 was Wilson's best statistical year in almost every category. They were 3rd in rushing and 3rd in attempts that year. That, to me, seems like what they should strive for.

Also, I can flip this statement right around and say that one reason the defense held teams in the teens was because the offense controlled the clock, pounded the ball, and Wilson made a handful of plays.

Neither statement is completely true. The defense slipped when the running game slipped. One affects the other. I'll give you that the defense was more important than the run game in general, but the key reason the run game worked wasn't just because the defense was good.

While ESPN and Yahoo are busy JO ing over QB's and such, the last 4 QB's left playing in 2017 were Tom Brady, Nick Foles, Case Keenum and Blake Bortles.

Football is still a team game.
