Personally I think elite RBs should be one of the higher paid positions they move the chains, eat clock, and are often the last guy watching your QBs back.

I think the opposite. RBs are less valued than almost every other position and are still being overvalued.

As i said elite RB not the position in general. Bell has moved the ball better than any non QB in the league over the last 3-4 years. RB in general are a dime a dozen, but if you find a talented one that fits you scheme you should pay the man.

IF SOMEONE HAS ALREADY POSTED THIS - SORRY FOR THE REPEAT. Honestly not sure what he is thinking. .... can't imagine the market will offer more next yr for a 28yr old RB - but I guess we'll find out. ....

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Steelers offered Le'Veon Bell a five-year, $70 million contract prior to Monday's 4 PM ET deadline.
Per RapSheet, the offer contained more than $30 million over the first two years, but Bell has opted to instead play on the $14.544 million tag for the second straight year before hitting free agency at 27 years old next March. The $14 million average on the Steelers' offer would easily make Bell the league's highest-paid back, an honor held at the moment by Devonta Freeman at $8.25 million per year. It's hard to see Bell doing better than this next offseason, but we'll see.

I can appreciate him knowing his worth. Without knowing all of the details about guaranteed money, likely the sticking point, or potential outs for the contracts based on drug tests, its hard to judge him harshly. However public opinion almost always blames the player for these situations. I dont blame him if he is still annoyed at not getting paid last year.

He'll be 27 next Feb. I don't think he'll have a problem finding a contract equal to or more than what the Steelers offered. But they will not get the same amount of production from him. He'll have 1-2 decent years left in the tank, but the team that signs him will be tied to him for 4-5 years.

He may or may not find a team willing to pay him more per year than the Steelers did, but he will likely find a bidder that will offer more up front & guaranteed money. The market is too unpredictable right now.

FWIW I don't blame either side for failure to reach common ground. I think the Steelers went above & beyond what I thought was reasonable. An RB's window is short, and someone as special & talented as him should be trying to max out in his prime. I do however think he's overvaluing himself as a WR2. Those numbers are drastically inflated given the amount of dumpoffs he gets. Its unfortunate that he has to spend 2 years on a tag, but at least he's making $26mil over those 2 years. That's 60% more than what Devonta Freeman is averaging, who is the highest paid RB under contract. He's being very well compensated.

Fully agree with this. ... I certainly get it from a player perspective, especially one entering the final couple of yrs of high level performance that he would test the market. However, I really find it hard to imagine a team ponying up more - 30mil guaranteed for the first 2 yrs now takes him to the threshold of an RB lifespan - especially considering the number of touches he has, and does get. Fully believe the wiser front offices will have red flags all over that.
The $$ he's will get under the tag is almost double the current highest paid guy so maybe he just takes the money and retires. ... who knows he's an enigma. ....

There's always a handful of desperate teams willing to pony up the big bucks for a player on the back half of their career. Bell has had nothing but red flags during his career. 2 major injuries, 2 suspensions, etc. He's got a lot of baggage that would scare enough teams away. Plus you can get marginal production to his at a fraction of the cost. That's the problem with the RB market. Dime a dozen, and typically favors youth. Steelers reportedly guaranteed him 30-33mil in the first 2 years of the contract. Nobody can know for sure if Rapaport's numbers are true, but if so that is crazy he turned it down. Especially since that contract was being offered from a contender. By testing the market next year he is going for the money and not the fame & glory.

Why not go 2 years 40 million and get him happy for two new years? No long term risk for the Steelers.

Good luck working Mason Rudolph into an offense that just lost it's biggest meatball.

Let's not forget that Cousin's contract was fully guaranteed. (Wasn't it?) I'm sure that sets the bar for all NFL positions now and not just QB.

And Rodgers is going to kill it in that regard as well.
