That's quite the argument (notice I'm not saying it's a good argument):

The argument from the Trump administration, announced Monday, is that Trump’s tariffs are legal but the retaliation is not.

“The actions taken by the president are wholly legitimate and fully justified as a matter of U.S. law and international trade rules. Instead of working with us to address a common problem, some of our trading partners have elected to respond with retaliatory tariffs designed to punish American workers, farmers and companies. These tariffs appear to breach each WTO Member’s commitments under the WTO Agreement,” U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said in a statement.

Big deal. The WTO wields no power

US and Russian relations are supposedly at their worst EVER right now.

I wasn't around for it, but I still feel pretty confident in saying our relations were a little worse at other times. Like, I don't know, the Cuban Missile Crisis? Or maybe the Berlin Blockade? Or the period surrounding the(ir) invasion of Afghanistan?

That's the only one I was around for, and that was... I still remember the nuke drills in schools. Like anything would help. My only comfort was that I was near 3 moderately important military bases and 2 big cities. If they attacked, I wouldn't have to worry about surviving. I would be vapor.

I can't imagine what life was like when the other two happened.

Trump is counting on people not knowing the reality of any of those situations, and it's working. And it's an unreal slap in the face to the Western World.

But sure, it's "never been worse" because we caught them doing illegal things. Right.

"strong and powerful in his denial"
"don't see any reason why it would be"

It's one thing to foolishly believe Putin. That is naive and stupid. It's another to have no understanding of WHY some of these actions might have taken place.

This may be the dumbest thing a US President has ever said in foreign relations and shows either an ego too fragile to take a bruising or an intellect too weak to understand very basic things about an adversary.

Is anyone else getting an increasing feeling McConnell was very in on this whole thing? There are two possibilities, in my mind:

1) He's a high-risk opportunist, willing to wager political suicide against a political power grab, and Russian influence allowed it, strictly coincidentally, to pay off.

2) He was in on it, and took the political risks of leveraging against public disclosure of or further investigation into Russian meddling, because he was both using it to ensure his risks paid off, and also trying to hide his involvement in it.

I like to tell all my saddest personal stories anonymously when I tell them on their internet, so you won't see this one on the Facebook or the Twitter. Buckle up. It's short and also not at all compelling.

I got a text from a friend asking if I wanted to go to a brewery with them. Obviously I did, as beer is my only remaining joy, so I said yes and then actually showered and dressed as an adult. Then my friend cancelled, but I'd already put more effort into dressing myself than anything not omelette related I'd done all day (I made an omelette for breakfast, like I do every morning. Six eggs. I'm not messing around), so I headed out on my own. Now I don't know what to do, so I'm drinking a beer alone in a bar with music way too loud for my old taste, posting this story to the Hoop.

Yinz are so lucky to have me.

*Apologies for typos. I'm bad at this on my phone. And I'm not proofreading my own sad story.

Update:

I found out Mike Matheny got fired, so I sat and laughed at tweets about that. Turned into a pretty good night alone at the bar, honestly.

I have said it before and I will say it again, shit has gone irreparably off the rails when Michael Steele (And Joe Walsh) are the voices of reason.

Joe Walsh: My Maserati does 185
President Trump: Hey, if Joe says his Maserati does 185, I believe it.

/Oh, the other Joe Walsh :D

The continued support of Trump in the face of today's press conference is baffling. A self-proclaimed patriot threw US servicemembers under the bus and deferred to a hostile foreign dictator. It's already taken unreasonable cognitive dissonance to overlook his hypocrisy and incompetence, and this just escalated the need for it beyond comprehension, and yet, here we are.
