I don't know why they can't put him in as a receiving TE and leave it at that. Teach him a few routs and let his hands do the talking.
Well if he can't block at all he'll get Dak killed.
My guess is at least one hoop fan will like this.

(No not you).

We aren't talking about a young Jimmy Graham here. The team wants to win. It's not like they are purposely holding him back. They are going to likely dress the other 3. Is Rico likely to even make the 46 man roster this year sans injury? Last I heard his special teams play was no better than his blocking or knowledge of the offense. If he misses one blitz pickup it could end our season. I think we all want Rico to take a step forward and make the team and hopefully even get some targets, but it is pretty telling to me that they never even took him off IR last year when it was clear we needed help in the passing game. Doing well against 2nd or 3rd stringers who don't even know your name in a preseason game is different than being where the team needs you on your one chance (maybe two?) on Sunday and making the play. I'm still staying optimistic about his chances, but he needs to improve as a Football player first.

No need to hide, I'd say there's most likely a few, I just had one Dak hater in mind.

Well I've heard from Phoenix eagle that Dak is the 5th best QB in the division so him getting killed wouldn't be the worst thing would it?

Well respectfully, none of us know what exactly we are looking at with Gathers. I think it's very important for Rico to see as much time as possible with the 1s and 2s in camp and preseason so the coaching staff can figure out once and for all if this is a guy they want to keep trying to develop. I'd like to see them throw him to the wolves and let him succeed or fail. The organization has too much invested in the guy to keep beating around the bush, let's see what Rico has.

Let's not forget that Gathers legitimately made the roster out of preseason last year.

That is why the suggestion of being just a receiver and not so much a blocker.
OK, but in most cases even when the TE runs a route, he has to block or chop first. If Rico give free passes at the QB it will not be good.

I agree with @es4m11 that Rico needs to see 1st team time. I love the guys potential, but at this point that's all it is. The staff has a lot better idea of where he is than we do.

I mostly agree with all but the last 2 sentences. They really haven't invested much in him. He was PS and IR and paid peanuts. We assume he would have made the roster last year but we really don't know for sure if the IR option was not available because they never took him off of it.

Sure, but we lost the guy that took most 1st team reps over the last number of years. We have 4 guys and the team needs to decide it's pecking order. You earn those reps, you aren't given them. There are only so many 1st team reps to go around. Those reps are very, very important now that there is almost no real football played in the offseason and the first priority is find out who indeed is your first team (and 2nd Team TE) and get them ready to play. Then we worry about the rest of the pecking order. Right now Rico needs to learn the Offense and improve his blocking. That can be done on the 3rd team just as easily. We also have a rookie that we spent a 4th on to get ready and see what he knows and he may just be our best blocker. So even if he is 3rd right now, he will play a decent amount so he needs reps too. If we cut Rico it's because we saw no future for him here. If he can help us the team will find a way to keep him.

Outside looking, since there is no way we know what the staff does I think if Rico can learn to block he could give the offense the best option at TE. If he can't block hes a liability. Personnaly I hope he reaches his potential and sticks on the 53.

Relatively speaking, of course. Has there been another time that the Cowboys have paid NFL roster money to a practice squad guy (2 years in a row!) just to ensure they retain him? I honestly can't recall another time - not saying it hasn't happened before. Then for the team to go through the farce of implying Gathers was suffering from concussion symptoms nearly all last season (only to walk back on that this off-season). All I'm saying is Dallas has gone to extraordinary lengths to keep this guy, at least the organization should give Rico an opportunity to prove he can't contribute on the field, in games when it counts. IMO Gathers didn't disappoint in limited game action last year, so keep throwing him out there until he fails and/or proves he's not up to the task.

This is exactly the way I see this as well. Rico knows the situation he found himself in last year. It was so easy for the team to keep him without exposing Dak with him on the field b/c they still didn't trust his blocking yet. Making up BS to keep him on IR in order to bring up Jarwin to take a look at him too. That obviously irked Rico and he's determined to not go back on IR.
Rico's ceiling is far greater than these other guys, but his experience level is by far the worst and is holding him back. Garrett saying he needs to practice an obscene amount to get him ready is his way of knocking that ego down that he gained last preseason. If Rico can learn his blocking assignments and stay healthy, I doubt there is much the other TEs can do to stay in front of him on the depth chart. Swaim has earned that trust, but behind him I don't think anyone else has a clear advantage right now.

IMO he made the roster last year on potential only. Now it is time for Rico to show more then potential or just cut bait on another of jerry's "standbach" experments.

I know that if he doesn't learn some blocking skills he is going to get hurt.
