Chris Sales pitches a one hitter through 7 and strikes out nine. The Sox take a 4-0 lead into the eigth and the bullpen shits the bed. Sox lose 6-4. They need to fire Drombowski. Find someone who understands what a relief pitcher is and what they must be able to do.

If I was Sales, I'd be asking for a trade via the media.

1 game out of 162. But this isn't an overreaction at all.

Yeah that sucked. I told myself the same thing, there's 161 to go. But let's be honest, the one thing everyone was concerned about reared it's ugly head 3 hours into the season and that's concerning.

As I said on the MLB board, I did have some concerns about the Sox bullpen leading up to Kimbrel. Even though the Sox were projected to be a top 10 bullpen per WAR, it was skewed by Kimbrel accounting for more than half of that. ZiPS is a lot higher on the Sox bullpen though, projecting them for about 6 WAR.

The first post is still an overreaction.

**Chris Sales**

If only the Red Sox had a hitter like Manny Ortiz in their lineup.

Oh the OP knew it was hyperbole. Still the concern was realized already. I get the feeling Kelly is another Daniel Bard.

Good to see the bats finally wake up. The record is deceiving as they play crap teams but no complaints about 7-1.

Man I wish this board was more active. It's nice to see the bats finally get going, and obviously the starting pitching has been lights out. Amazing start given all the injuries, imagine this lineup with Pedroia and all the other pieces returning.

But I have never seen such a troubling bullpen. I mean every one they throw out there with the obvious exception of Kimbrell is a disaster waiting to happen. The exception is the kid Poyner but something tells me that 89-90 MPH fastball with little movement won't hold up through a playoff run.

a few years ago there were some posters on here, but it's been largely inactive for a while now. you're better off posting on the MLB General board.

yeah, I'm still uneasy with the bullpen. I feel pretty good about the offense even with some of the scares (Betts' collision at home earlier today, Hanley's wrist, Pedroia's health, etc). I expect them to hit much better than last year.

Yeah I guess that's where I'll post mostly. But before I go:

Let's Go Red Sox

Yeah that was a disaster and not a good job managing the bullpen imo by Cora at all. But alas it hasn't meant much.... But the 7th and 8th inning could prove to be worrisome

Best start since 2002. But let's fire Dombrowski because they lost on Opening Day.

as long as Betts remains healthy they are in good shape! Also, Sale came back to the K form today so that's a very good thing

it is a little concerning when the team seems to tank offensively when Sale pitches.. I thought JBJ might have turned a corner but it appears he has not....

JBJ, Nunez, Vazquez, Leon, all question marks at the plate right now but the emergence of Mookie and JD it seems to have evened them out...

Bullpen (knocking on wood) has been good and the pitching, minus Pomeranz has been decent..... Wright might be the answer right now

Red Sox pitching staff rankings (all of MLB):

WAR: 2nd
ERA: 4th
ERA+: 3rd
WHIP: 5th
FIP: 2nd
xFIP: 5th
K/9: 3rd
K-BB%: 4th
HR/9: 2nd

Outside of Pomeranz shitting the bed prior to hitting the DL, the pitching has been quite good.

As for the offense...

Runs: 2nd in MLB
SB: 3rd
SB%: t-1st
K%: 5th
BABIP: 13th
wRC+: 3rd
BA: 2nd
OBP: 5th
SLG%: 2nd
HR: 2nd
wOBA: 3rd

The Red Sox do have a pretty noticeable home/road split (.839 OPS at home vs .728 on the road), but the pitching has also been significantly better on the road (3.07 ERA) than at home (3.80).
