The Celtics have a really good team. Could very well dominate the East for the next few years, if the Sixers don't. But the team, as constructed isn't winning titles without one of their young players stepping up to an MVP level or bringing one in.

You don't win by having a group of really good players. You win by having a team with at least one elite player surrounded by really good players.
Your words are full of traditional, time tested NBA wisdom. No doubt.

Wasn't that long ago that most folks swore Golden State would never win a title... because "you can't win a NBA championship based on 3 pt shooting" and similar, time tested wisdom.

Yeah and then Steph Curry won an MVP, two in fact.

My point remains.

The NBA is changing... the old rules may not apply as strictly.

Stevens is on the cutting edge of positionless basketball and analytics... he's building something new, and on the lead wave of it.

LOL. I would like to here what he has to say about the matter.

To be clear, I'm not slagging the Celtics. They have a very good team. And fully healthy they could be a team that could make it to the WCF. But it would take a LOT of things to go right for them to go beyond that.

They would be quite impressive to make it to the WCF :heh:

Not true.

KG was still elite his first season when the Celtics won. He was 31 when dealt to Boston. His stats declined because he was sharing the load with 2 other stars instead of carrying the TWolves on his back.

Detroit is the only team since 1980 who won a title without a superstar caliber player. Kyrie is very good, but he isn't on that level. I betting that these Celtics aren't going to be the exception to the rule.

What made the Detroit team work was they had one of the best coaches of all time. And they beat a team with a bunch of superstars who had won a couple titles previously....hmmm....

Stevens is the best coach today. And the Warriors are a bunch of superstars who have won a couple titles previously.

It's facile to dismiss the Celtics outright. It would help to have a superstar. But it is not strictly necessary if they have enough other stuff in their favor.

Great point.

Can't argue with a single thing you just said.

According to Lakersnation, Spurs have zero interest in Lonzo Ball because of the circus he brings. But Ingram, Kuzma and draft picks is compelling. I like the idea of keeping Ball because of value he brings as a point guard. LAKERS will end up with enough forwards already anyway. KL and Paul George combined with resigning Julius Randle without LeBron would make the Lakers pretty good

BOOM! Love and #8 for Kawhi. Deal done.

Say Porter slides you got:

Murray
Green
Porter
Love
Aldridge

They can always flip Love for draft picks lol
Most important part of the article...

“Kevin Love has a $24 million deal for 2018-19 and a $25 million player option for 2019-20,” Pluto writes. “That could make him attractive in a trade. But I’m not sure a Leonard/Love deal would have much interest to the Spurs, who would want multiple assets.” The only leg up the Cavs might have is the fact they play in the Eastern Conference, as the Spurs likely would rather not trade Leonard to a team in the West. Still, when it comes to putting together a reasonable package, Cleveland just doesn’t have the assets.

I doubt the Spurs and Aldridge value Love very much. How much of this Kawhi problem can you blame on Aldridge? He felt outright disrespected by Kobe in free agency for not handing over the team, he was clearly #2 in Portland next to Lillard, and Aldridge was disgruntled with the Spurs for a time too. Could be a classic case of an obvious #2 wanting his own team, like Dwight Howard.

Pure speculation, of course.
