How does holding out help out a player I never understood this? You would think that showing up to all the camps and OTAs being a vocal leader and a positive impactful model player to the other players would be the better approach? If he was a free agent and I were a GM I would label him as someone who cares more about his money and contract than the team.

I'm guessing this is more about risk of injury going into the final year while coming off an injury. If he gets injured during mini camp his bargaining power is greatly diminished.

If ET got hurt, he loses millions and GM's could view him as damage goods being at the end of his career. He's looking for one last payday before he retires. I hope the FO resigns him unless he's asking for unreasonable type money.

I don't blame him. First, it's reported that the Hawks are trying to trade him. Then, they haven't even talked to him about his contract (last I heard). Not surprising that he wants to get an extension done before the season.
Well ok, but you could just as easily say ET helped create this whole thing with his weird stunt after the Dallas game. I don't blame him for wanting an extension, but I'm not sure holding out is going to help him get one.

If there's one thing that this front office has stayed steadfast in its not giving into a players hold out or contract demands. He's a great football player, but not the smartest business man which is proven with this decision. He's my favorite player on this team, but this bums me out that he has decided to play hardball in a losing fight. This won't turn out good for any of the involved parties, what a waste.

I feel like if his asking price was reasonable he would have been resigned already because both sides have talked. If nothing got done and the seahawks have pushed hard to trade him during the draft and offseason that tells me that they were not close to an agreement. I remember seeing reports or read somewhere that he thinks he should be the highest paid safety in the league. In my opinion if you hit the free agent market and no team is paying the highest safety salary in the NFL then there is no point to this.

This would be a lot easier if we knew what the numbers being talked about is. I think the seahawks are giving him his market value and he is asking to be the highest paid safety in the league. but point being have we seen any player hold out and managment cave in and give him a contract extention before the season starts?

The one thing I'm almost sure of is he won't hold out when the season starts cause that'll take away his leverage for contract talks if he becomes a FA. He'll probably be back by the end of TC.

Also heard he could skip training camp too unless he gets a new contract. Can we trade him already?

We see similar situations played out ever year. Players seeking their third contract ( which could be their last NFL contract) are trying to maximize it and teams are seeking a more team friendly contract that will protect them if things go badly. Just this year we saw the Cowboys let Dez go. Hard to say what is going to happen with Thomas, but starting to look like the Seahawks are willing to just let him play out his contract and then let him walk. They can’t get a decent return in a trade and they don’t plan to maximize contract #3. If that’s the case then Thomas is either going have play out his contract or sign a team friendly contract.
He really has no leverage here.

He might just have to swallow his pride and take the team friendly deal.

I was off about Kam's holdout -- it was actually 2015, not 2 years ago. He held out, missed a couple regular season games, lost money, and returned to the team without a new deal. He didn't get one until 2 seasons later. If this is the blueprint ET is using, then he very well may be extra terrestrial.

It definitely seems like he's going down that very same road. I hope we don't budge with him the same way we did Kam Chancellor.

Let him hold out. He's due to make $10.4 million this upcoming season. $1.9 of that is his signing bonus. I can understand his wanting of a final contract extension. I think he taking the wrong approach on this though. If he holds out till week 10, he'll lose 8.4 million in total. Not a smart way of negotiating.

Yeah he's only hurting himself honestly.

Well, one major difference between this situation and Kam's is that Thomas isn't 3 years from the end of his deal. He's actually right where the front office says they negotiate contract extensions - with one year left. So, he's not following the Kam Chancellor "blueprint".

Thomas is still one of the best safeties in the game, I'd be surprised if he didn't hold out going into the final year of his contract.

I agree... Especially with the depth we have that position now... It would be different if D. Brown was holding out, because our depth is horrible on the OL but Thomas doesn't have that much leverage... There are 2 guys chomping at the bit to replace him...

heh.

Julio Jones notified Falcons he won't be attending mandatory camp. He's got THREE years left on his deal.

I can't be bothered to check and see if hoop's ATL fans are as triggered by Julio as SEA fans are by Earl.

No trade. That would have been done before the draft. He's part of the 2018 squad.

Yeah the way the hawks always say " We reward players when they have 1 year left" They have really not rewarded Earl so they have not practiced what they preach so if i was Thomas i would skip Out also. He deserves a contract. I get the Hawks thinking also. They could get him for this year and Franchise him if they need to the following year. I think we see things start playing out differently now as the Hawks start retooling the roster. Retool/rebuild call it what you want but they are trying to get younger around Wagner and Wilson.
