It wasn't the same process and it was a different era. The game has changed since the salary cap and free agent era. Look at the some of the other successful teams in this era and they did not start a rebuilding process by bring in high priced free agents. If money was so important Tomsula or Chip Kelly would still be coaching the team.
LOL!

Same same. I'm sure things will look different when offenses pull the cover off the car and really fire the engine up...but the D line and linebackers have looked pretty formidable thus far. I like the two new rooks a lot though...I feel like we're miles away from what we had last year already. The push up front will help our young DBs. Still a ways to go and there will be growing pains but I feel like we actually have a product to roll out on the field.

Yea, I think the defensive coaching under O'Neil was pretty bad last year too

There is a story at NFL.com saying the 9ers are going to trade for former 1st round('15) O-lineman Laken Tomlinson for a 5th rounder in '19. These usually are failed experiments (small investment at least) but sometimes payoff... dunno enough about him.

I read he was pretty good as a pass blocker but poor run blocker but he took a step back in 2016. He split time with another guard in Detroit and each one took turns getting abused. Probably won't amount to much. Sounds like he might have been waived if not traded

Jimmie Ward: The 49ers’ expensive insurance policy

While this is true, i think in THIS particular season, i'm ok with it. We don't have experienced depth in the secondary, and we've seen before how DB's get hurt often. Ward is bridging the gap for these incoming rookies Moore, Reed, and maybe McFadden and Harris.

Instead of lamenting how expensive Ward is, lets be happy we have even better players keeping him out Apparently we got a steal in Colbert, which is a good thing. Witherspoon is on a good trajectory, which is a good thing. K'Waun is a good NB, again a good thing.

  1. OG Joshua Garnett. Defensive tackles continuously pushed Garnett into the backfield during one-on-one pass-rush drills. He could not hold ground. That’s not good for a guard.
  2. OG Laken Tomlinson. What I wrote about Garnett.

Our own DT's are that good, or are these guys just bad? Not a good start for our OG's, Jimmy G is obviously the key and needs PROTECTION.

This is what worried me about not really addressing the need at OG other than bringing in Cooper who is maybe a little better than the two players mentioned. It is going to be a weakness for this team.

It isn't our own DTs. We watched Tomlinson for over half of last year as a starter and we know he just isn't good. There is a reason why Detroit traded Tomlinson, a former 1st rounder, last year. I don't think Garnett has played football in over a year. I think he spent last season on IR just getting into shape. I am not concerned with him struggling during the OTAs. Going to take awhile for him to get back into playing

Will Mullens or Beathard win 49ers' backup QB competition?

If you just go by the 'eye test', Mullins will be the back-up QB.....easily. It isn't just pure stats, he operated the offense much better than Beathard. More plays (not all) looked like a real offense, when Mullins was in.

Mullins apparently doesn't throw the long ball but as a back-up QB, i'll take his ability to execute the short and medium routes. Cause if he was so good in everything, he wouldn't be a back-up.

Makes sense to start off Bosa as the rush specialist, and adding more and more downs as he gets better. He hasn't played a lot recently, and we don't want him to re-injure himself. But adding more downs shouldn't take all season, maybe 4-5 games before he starts playing most snaps at DE?

I'm fine starting Ford off in a similar manner, as the pass rush specialist.

In the bigger picture, yes go ahead and "rotate" these guys a little bit. Go ahead and "spell" Buckner too, cause its a long season. But i wouldn't constantly move them in and out on 1st and 2nd downs.

Yes, adding more talent and 'game changing' players is great.

But a LOT still hinges on the play of JG.

I think the plan is rotate all the defensive lineman quite a bit to keep them fresh. From what I've read Ford is not a good run defender so I would expect Ford to play more often in passing situations with Thomas or another player on the outside. Unlike Ford, I think Bosa will be playing the run also

Taylor seems to be the standout of camp so far. Observers have noticed how much quicker he looks this season compared to last when he was coming back from back surgery

So discouraging to read JG isn't doing well. Yeah, i know its just the beginning of TC, and he hasn't played 11 on 11 for so long, but 5 of 14 is too far off.

It's still pretty early if he still looks that way at the end of camp that's when you worry.
