It’s the second time that Person has signed a contract to join the team. He entered the league as a Niners seventh-round pick in 2011, but never played in a regular season game for the team. Some much needed competition alongside Richburg.

They brought in two experienced centers last year and they were gone before the end of training camp. I think this guy is training camp fodder.

Knowing they might not have Reuben Foster this season, the 49ers began formulating a Plan B long ago. They re-signed Brock Coyle, signed veteran Korey Toomer and selected BYU linebacker Fred Warnerin the third round.

They also welcome the return of Malcolm Smith, who tore a pectoral muscle in training camp after signing a five-year, $26.5 million deal with the 49ers during the 2017 offseason.

“As a football player, not being able to do the thing you love and the thing you always dream of doing since you were a little boy is pretty difficult,” Smith said, via Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. “It was a challenging time for me personally but it was good to see our growth as a team throughout the year. I tried to be around as much as possible.”

Smith is expected to participate in OTAs, which begin next week. The 49ers had penciled in Smith and Foster as their inside linebackers last offseason before Smith’s injury.

Now, San Francisco might not have Foster. He has a preliminary hearing Thursday on three felony charges.

A lot of people have been talking about this in the off season so I'm not surprised this is coming out.

The 49ers picked up Armstead's fifth-year option back in April, which means if they want to keep him in 2019 at the cost of $9.046 million in salary, they can. The option, however, isn't fully guaranteed until March. That means Lynch and Shanahan will have a decision to make before then.

Wow, as much as i'd want Arik back, not at this number. Let Thomas take the lead at 'big end', and i'm sure they want to get a good look at Street.

The 10 most notable offensive 2019 NFL free agents | NFL Analysis | Pro Football Focus

If this is the top ten offensive FA's, don't see us signing any 'top' FA's on offense. To me, the most intriguing guys are the Center Paradis and OT James. But we aren't changing our starting C and OT just yet.

I would be okay with adding Rate at WR for the right price. I see them adding a guard in free agency.

There has been no more consistently elusive wide receiver in the NFL over the past five years. Tate has broken 20-plus tackles after the catch in every season since 2011. Tate may not be your prototypical ‘X’ receiver, but few are as deadly on screens and underneath. If you already have an established number one receiver, Tate can take your offense to the next level.

According to this writer, Tate isn't a top "established number one receiver", which is really what we need. For screens and underneath, i'd just stick with Taylor and James for one more season.

Why spend big money on a top FA WR, for screen and underneath?

OFFENSIVE TACKLE
Mike McGlinchey, San Francisco 49ers

No rookie tackle was more dominant with his run-blocking than McGlinchey this season, consistently moving defenders off the point of attack. He was impressive enough as a run blocker in 2018 to even outweigh the fact that he allowed 40 pressures from his right tackle spot for San Francisco.

We're all glad McGlichey isn't a bust, but i notice they always emphasize his run blocking? So can't help wonder how we move forward at OT, knowing McGlinchey isn't an "elite" pass protector? He's not bad at pass protect but that isn't something he's noted for. Will his pass blocking improve if moved to the left where he was at Notre Dame?

I know Staley will play one more year, but you have to think ahead. We aren't likely to draft an OT high so the options are draft a mid rounder now and HOPE he pans out; sign a FA after Staley retires, or draft an OT in round 1 after Staley retires.

Signing a top OT is something you try to avoid, not to mention they don't get on the market often. If we're thinking draft an OT high in 2020, that is risky business not knowing where we slot and quality of prospects? So maybe....MAYBE we add a mid-round OT now?

That is why I said right price. I don't agree with just sticking with those two, I have concerns about Taylor staying healthy.

I'm not sure what is risky about drafting a guy early in 2020? Usually at least one too and IT and he'll that is what the scouting department is for if they don't know what OT's might be available in 2020 they should lose their jobs.

McGlinchey will be the LT when Staley retires. He has run into the same problem he had at Notre Dame a great LT already in place. Notre Dame has had some very good depth on their O-Line he'll McGovern the top guard in this year's draft class from Penn State is a Notre Dame transfer Barr and Nelson were ahead of him.

Yeah, Taylor had a back injury which isn't easy to stay away from, but thats why i mentioned James too. Again, not saying we're set with our "screen and underneath" WR, but am saying the price difference isn't worth Tate. I can live with Taylor or James for one season, while we address D or O-line first.

For the last two years, it seems like the 49ers have been connected with almost every available FA. I quit taking those reports seriously.

I agree the biggest issue is the lines but wr play is an issue

Yes, no doubt we can improve at WR, but IMO we need an outside WR who can get separation quicker. I know 'quicker' is fractions of a second, but this allows the QB to throw "fractions of a second" earlier. An outside receiver can run all route trees, not be limited to screens and underneath routes.

If Tate is for screens and underneath routes, we don't need to overspend on this top FA.
