i was reading the new rules and this one blows me away.

the receiving team can no longer initiate blocks before the ball is caught or hits the ground.

Uhm HELLO! you got now by rule 8 people with in 15 yards of where the ball is kicked and they can not block anyone till the ball is caught or hits the ground? why not just let the whole kicking team run right past these 8 guys unblocked then because thats what this rule will cause. It has to be a error in the interpretation of the rule. By the time a returner catches the ball most kicking team defenders are at the 25-35 yardline of the receiving team which is 30-40 yards down the field. How the hell are these 8 people supposed to block anyone? turn their backs and run all the way to their goal line? LMAO! i see even HIGHER speed hits now with this rule.

They are trying to get rid of the high speed collisions. So teams are going to have to learn how to get those 8 guys to run interference on the runners without initiating a block.

I doubt this will lead to more high speed collisions although it may not achieve what they want.

The alignment will be completely different on both sides off the ball during a kickoff. I would think of it more like punt formation on each side of the ball, just with a huge gap in between to begin rather than half of a yard.

so now the kicking team basically gets to advance towards the kick returner unblocked??

That sounds safe/seems legit.

and don't forget they can't block ANYONE till the ball is caught or hits the ground. Thats what people got to think about. That right there will lead to more of the coverage team being at higher speeds when they have a chance to hit the returner. All the receiving team can do is wait for the PR to catch it and THEN try and block someone thats got a full head of steam going. Thats going to be tough to do. I see a LOT of block in the back penalties coming. There will be more bodies running at the Returner than ever before because his own team has to run With the kicking team till the ball is caught. lol. This is going to look so weird and SO dangerous!

To me it's basically telling the Returners on the kickoffs yeah don't even think about returning the kick. This then leads to the HIGH pooch kicks that land at say the 10 yard line. By the time the Returner could CATCH those the coverage team is all around him because NONE could be blocked before he caught it. Thats the ticket now for kickoffs Pooch it to the 10. Kick it as high as you can and short.

Well I'm glad you at least got THAT one. Since the first one wasn't tremendously serious either.

the receiving team can no longer initiate blocks before the ball is caught or hits the ground.

This isn't what the new rule says. A block cannot be initiated inside the 15 yard area from the kicking team's restraining line until the ball is touched or hits the ground. So if the ball is kicked from the 35, a block still can be initiated on the receiving team's half of the field at any time after kickoff.

Like i said "It has to be a error in the interpretation of the rule." because i was reading it when they released it and it said NOTHING about the restraining lines. It just said what i copy and pasted. I see they have revised what they had posted now. THANK GOD!

The rules change for kickoffs may be interesting. Some are thinking it will result in fewer linemen on KO return due to the blocking restrictions. Could also give a greater advantage to teams with top quality returners since the kicking team doesn't get that 5 yard running start.

This rule change could also mean a change in how teams fill out their roster. You might see more CB, RB and WR make the team than say Lineman ( D or O ) because they will need more people that can turn their back and run 30 yards then turn around and track someone to block.

It's fine. I heard the returner is gonna get a "3 alligator" before anyone can hit him.

God don't let Penny return for the first several weeks, and keep Lockett out of there too until this either gets changed or we have a chance to see it in action.. just kneel everything possible for Christ sake and put some random out there since he'll probably be decapitated by week 2.
