Is there anything here? Probably nothing more than coincidence. Probably more a reflection of scheduling than anything else. That and the fact that this team is winning games late that they would have lost in recent years. They are far better in the clutch now. Edwin Diaz pitching like a Cy Young candidate doesn't hurt either. If the Astro starting pitching pitchers were not pinetaring their way to absurd stats, Diaz would definitely be an early Cy candidate.

And we need to fatten up on the weak teams while we can. The schedule in June and July is not kind. 26 of the 51 games are against the Astros, Angels, Red Sox and Yankees. The wild card (or perhaps division, if you want to dream big) will be won or lost in those two months.

I kinda painted the scenario where replacing a 4-5 WAR 2nd baseman in Cano with a 4-5 WAR 2nd baseman in Gordon maybe wouldn't affect things that much. Basically you are substituting better defense for offense. Couple that with taking Gordon's below average defense in CF with Heredia who is probably slightly above average then you could paint a glass half full picture.

However with Gordon's injury that kind of throws a wrench into that theory. If he's truly only out a couple of weeks tho maybe this theory still holds true. Just try survive the next 10 days I guess

Surviving the next 10 is all the more challenging with Cruz and Haniger now banged up. Kudos to Leake for sending Oakland a message. It needed to be sent. But hitting Canha, their fourth or fifth biggest threat in their lineup, with an 88 mph fastball in the butt cheek hardly compensates for them hitting the wrist of our leading RBI guy.

Maybe it's just the way I have seen things, but it seems this team plays it's best when it's behind the eight ball so to speak. It's either that or once they send off the other team's starter, they start to get the hits and runs. Wish they had stats for when this team scores it runs. It just seems like the runs tend to come the last few innings for the most part.

gordan is better defence ( gold glove)than cano and equal offence AT 2B..without the Hr's ++stolin bases which can be just as good
at times

I love stolen bases, but no, they're not just as good as HRs

O’Neil: Mariners are maybe most blessed team to have ever been cursed.

O'Neil: Mariners are maybe most blessed team to have ever been cursed

They are 4-0 in extra-inning games this season. They’ve also watched as Nelson Cruz sprained his ankle while slipping on the dugout steps AFTER a home run and Ryon Healy suffered an injury doing a plyometric workout after a game.

To say the Mariners have been fortunate is accurate in some ways: They have scored only eight more runs than they’ve allowed this season and yet are 28-19. Compare that to the Dodgers, who have scored 13 more runs than they’ve allowed yet are 21-27.

What a crazy season this has been. :scratch:

Good thing Pythagorean records don't count in the standings. Their Pythagorean record is probably around 24-23. Reminds me of '09 when they had a run differential of -52 and still managed to finish 8 games over .500.

Salk: It’s time for the Mariners to give Jerry Dipoto a contract extension

Salk: It's time for the Mariners to give Jerry Dipoto a contract extension

Both took over three years ago, took the unusual step of entering this season as lame ducks, and have done enough to earn the continued faith of the fans, the players, and (in this case, most importantly) upper management.

Wait WTF? :scratch::scratch:

I also appreciate his understanding of the starting pitching market this past offseason. With very little available, and most of the free agents having disappointing starts with their new teams, he went about rebuilding his staff during last season by adding Mike Leake and Marco Gonzales in trades.

Wait WTF :tsk::tsk:

Perhaps my favorite Dipoto move was the inspired decision to hire Servais as manager.

I know that's going poss some people off.

I'm already on record saying I wanted Jerry fired last year.

But, in a way, they have to extend him. Not a single general manager that is worth a lick is going to want the Mariners job to replace Jerry, just end with another guy who lies his way to a job like Jack Z.

Jerry has put the future of the franchise on life support so might as well extend him so either he goes down with the ship or he can truly show he is smarter than every other person in baseball.

I was under the assumption that unless things went incredibly south both Dipoto and Servais would be back. Jerry has done a lot that I don't agree with but at the same time I think firing him now would just put things in an even worse spot. Especially since this franchise probably wont rebuild so the kind of replacement they would hire wouldn't probably be better.

Well with close to 1000 votes, it appears that 80% of us want to re-sign both Dipoto and Servais. Sorry, but I am not one of those 80%ers.

Well here is the good news; He has no-one left to trade, a bad farm system with no-one left to lose that would hurt us, and no money to spend so we won't get strapped down with a long term contract. So ya, might as well keep him since all the damage has already been done.

Well like I said, if they fire Dipoto the only person that would take the job would be a con artist. No GM with half a brain would touch the Mariners GM position this off season.

Mariners have been winning and competitive despite the absence of Cano, and Cruz thus far being a non factor. That's a good sign, I think. Maybe there is still life after Cruz and Cano.

Updated. The team is now 32-8 since Cano was injured/suspended. It's no wonder that Dipoto is publicly stating that Robbie is not guaranteed the starting job at second base when he returns. They don't have to kiss Robbie's ass anymore. The team has proven it can survive, if not flourish, without him.

How they are doing it is a mystery. Leake, Gonzales, LeBlanc are nothing special. But maybe they are the right type of pitcher for the current era of baseball, with all the strikeouts and homeruns. With 'the shift' forcing pull hitters to change their swing from a line drive type swing to a swing with a lift, more hitters are sitting on the fastball. That makes soft tossers who bend the ball well the new strikeout artists. There are still plenty of power pitchers around, but soft tossers who know how to pitch (and those three seemingly do) have become increasingly effective.
