jordan worship aside, i'm sure shaq did work hard. all world class athletes do.

shaq was not as athletic as chamberlain, or skilled as jabbar.
Or as good as Hakeem.

No non ball handler has a chance at GOAT. Or Top 5.

Shaq was a giant. That's it. Couldn't shoot, couldn't dribble.

Shaq fans I'm sure won't agree.

He was over 7 foot and 389 stone...or sumfin like that!

He couldn't sink a free throw to save his life. But he was big....and that was his job....to be big inside the paint.....and he was good at his job!

He couldn't jump as high as he thought he could either....

Hakeem > Shaq

Shaq was a giant who received the pass, turned and ran over whoever was standing there and dunked the ball, then missed a free throw because he got the foul. He was great at what he did, but that's all he did...

that might be good tabloid material, but if you don't work hard, at that level, you'll be out of league. everybody works hard at that level. it's not high school. shaq became injury prone and had some weight problems, but that came later in his career when he was past his prime.

lol

Nothing tabloid about it. His refusal to stay in shape in the off-season is what led to his injury issues, his "weight problems" and shortened his prime years.

Shaq himself has admitted this. Said he should have listened to Kobe when Kobe was on him about staying in shape in the off-season.

Shaq looked at the NBA as his job, which it obviously was, but he also had the attitude that he was only putting in work when he was on "company time." So, in the off-season, he vacationed, ate whatever he wanted and didn't do anything to stay in shape.

As I said, he definitely worked hard during the season, but did nothing to stay in shape in the off-season. He wouldn't even have lingering injuries taken care of in the off-season because "I got hurt on company time, I'm gonna heal on company time."

shaq was @30 when he opted to have toe surgery which is near the end of a pro basketball players prime. surgery is always a last resort. i'm sure giving it time heal, in the off season, was a consideration. when shaq was younger, he never had weight problems. as he got older, he was packing a little more weight than he should have. it's not that unusual for older players to gain weight. it doen't mean he laid on the couch all off season, ate chips, and never worked out. it just means his metabolism had changed, with no correction in diet for it.

Exactly, as we get older, our metabolism changes. Happens to everyone, even elite athletes.

So, as they get older, it becomes harder and harder to get back into shape and getting back into shape takes it's own toll.

Most players, especially the all-time greats, figure this out and make the necessary changes to their diet, workouts, how they handle injuries, etc.

I remember when Magic started getting older and having to make concessions. I guess he loves nachos and would eat them like crazy in the off-season. I remember him telling a reporter during training camp one year that the hardest thing for him when it came to getting/staying in shape was giving up nachos. lol

Shaq did none of the above. He tried to keep doing things the same way he did when he was younger and it cost him.

As for the surgery, he knew surgery was the only way to fix it and he chose to wait until training camp so he could do it on "company time."

Hakeem > Shaq

No entirely correct.

Shaq was also an excellent passer and he did develop a pretty solid little one handed jumper from about 5-10 feet.

He did use his size and strength quite a bit. Why wouldn't he? Not only was he bigger and stronger than just about everyone, but he was also surprisingly quick for a guy his size and quicker than most of the centers he faced. Overall, he wasn't as "skilled" as he could have been had he put in more work. But he was more skilled than he gets credit for.

Never understood what his problem was at the free throw line. According to his coaches, he had no problem hitting them in practice. But games were a different story.

Although, I will say, the Hack-A-Shaq wasn't quite as effective as it gets credit for. There was a bit of an art to it. Because if a team used it too much, he'd get into a rhythm and it would backfire.

Unsurprisingly, Pop was probably the one who used it most effectively.

Hakeem was better than Shaq. To this day, Shaq calls him Mr. Olajuwon because of how well Hakeem played against him in the finals. Had Shaq worked harder on his game, I think he'd have been better than Hakeem.
