People who root for a P5 team that neither you nor your children attended, how/why did you pick ?

For me, it’s proximity and UC affiliation. I attended a UC school that no longer has football (our surfing and ultimate frisbee teams are the tits, though). I lived for many years in Pasadena, home of UCLA, another fine UC school, so I root for them.

Oh hell yea. I am a VT fan through and through. I went to the Tech during the MV7 years. Also went to Arky State (Red Wolves) for grad school as well. But I do try and record some of the K-State games when I can keep up.

Nice. I went to Arkansas State in the mid to late 90s. Back when the Indian mascot was not offensive.

As for the original question, I grew up in Maryland and the Terps are the only college team in D1 from Maryland.

They need to pump some more of that UA money into the program. But I was happy with their addition to the B1G unlike Buttgers.

In states with strong inner rivalries it's sort of like politics, you have to pick a side whether you're actually involved or not. I grew up at USC (dad was a prof. there) and also legit graduated, so I'm not referencing myself in regard to the OP question. But if you're in SC you pretty much have to be a fan of the Gamecocks or Tigers or else be considered irrelevant.

Ralph Sampson

I have been following the school since he went there when I was a little kid. My father did go to ODU, so I will watch and see what they are doing.

My mother and father meet at OU and watched Bud Wilkinson coach Oklahoma.
My whole family is OU.
I was an Oklahoma fan before I was born.
Went to Oklahoma when Barry Switzer was coaching.
Some great games.

All TV now though.

Lived in Norman for almost a decade as a child, mother atcually worked in the athletic dept at OU during that time (Switzer years). We had lots of free tickets to OU sports (football, basketball, baseball, wrestling, etc.). Became a fan as a child and never stopped being a fan.

I grew up about an hour north of Tuscaloosa during the Bear Bryant dynasty. In our state you had to declare and switching sides marked you as having no heart. The thing that probably influenced me most to choose to be in the minority in my area was that the Alabama fans had no respect for most anyone and displayed the poorest sportsmanship that I have ever witnessed. This was in an era that sportsmanship was taught and supposedly valued. I just could not bring myself to associate with that in a lifelong manner.

It's not really unusual around these parts....most families have people that have gone to Michigan and Michigan State in them....usually the slower kids go to MSU :D

I should have mentioned that I was at OU for a short stretch during the Bud Wilkinson years....

We’ve seen a lot of slow people at Michigan lately.

When I was growing up, we lived in the middle of nowhere, and we couldn't get cable to our house, so we only got 7 channels. Notre Dame was on tv more than any other program, at the time. I just gradually starting liking them.

This seems to come up every year or two.

Both parents (and other family members) are UNL alums. They met there actually. Both native Nebraskans as well. Dad took several jobs in different states until landing in KanBraska for 30 years. My Sister and I went to a former "rival" school due to cost and proximity. Although my plan had always been to go to UNL... until I decided on the local option because of a girl. The girl is now my Wife.
As soon as my Sister graduated, she moved to Nebraska. After I graduated (was already married at this point) I was 2/3s of the way through the hiring process for a job in Nebraska. Then my Wife and I decided it would be fun to be young professionals for a couple years in our hometown.... oops, I think this is permeanent now. As soon as my Dad retired, they moved back to Nebraska. Nebraska.
Really the only reason I am where I am is because of job opportunities for my Pops, I found me a lady, and my first job out of college became a career..

That's exactly why I started to hate them. There would be a slate of good games on any particular Saturday, but instead of those you'd get Notre Dame Vs. Army or some other academy /cream puff.

I think the obvious and overwhelming answer for most will be "I was born and raised in _____" . That's the case for me. I didn't go to Iowa because I had better options academically but a few of my sister's went there.
