Wisconsin is a good one.
Might bet the best one so far.
Maybe.

But only 14 Conference Championships probably knocks them down a few spots.

I would agree with that.

Alvarez turned them into a power, but before that, they weren't very good at all. Neither
was their basketball. I always remember watching a Wisconsin game, I believe in the
80's where the students held up a sign that read..."If you think this is bad...wait till Basketball
Season."

Wisconsin has a system that works for them now. They just get those big Dairy farmers to play
on that offensive line. Have excellent weight training for them. Get a couple of punishing backs
and come right at you and shorten every game they play in. Big Backs like going there because they'll
get plenty of carries. There another team that knows there shortcomings but have developed a system
to highlight their strengths instead of their weaknesses. They don't wow you...they punish you.

Sure but most of that is due to the last 2 decades which was my point . If we were having this discussion in 1998 ko one would've picked Wisky over Iowa historically . Right now it's relatively close with a small edge to the Badgers. I think both teams made the Top 25 all time programs at 24 and 25 respectively
So what you’re saying is Wisconsin’s last 20 years outweigh Iowa’s entire history, or thereabouts.

Arizona State could be up there.

Yes and No.

They had some great teams under Frank Kush, but playing in the WAC hurt them. They just
couldn't get the recognition that they deserved. I think they did finish 2nd one year when
they beat a good Nebraska team in the Fiesta Bowl. It was in the mid 70's something like that.
(I think they were unbeaten that year)

I'm saying the last 20 years have moved Wisconsin slightly ahead of Iowa historically but prior to that I was was better. The Badgers have averaged over 9 wins per year the last 2 decades. For the first 50+ years of CFB most teams didn't play 9 games in a whole season. I wasn't trying to be combative , I respect Wisky and consider them to be the program most likely Iowa in all CFB. You guys have just done a far better job at being consistent over the last 2 decades . It is what it is

In 1996 (I think could be 97) they broke Nebraska's unbeaten streak in regular season and were undefeated up to the Rose Bowl. OSU scored a last second TD though eliminating ASU's best chance to date of a National Title. I think undefeated they win the National Title no question, but with the loss they dropped to 3rd or 4th.

Actually, before 1997, Wisconsin still had more wins and a better winning percentage than Iowa.

Slightly but Iowa had more top 10 finishes and better head to head and more conference titles ( the big stuff ). It was never one sided either way. Still isn't but Wisky has moved ahead in most categories based on the last 2 decades

14 conference titles while playing the Big 10.

West Virginia has 15 conference titles, and a lot of them came in the Big East when it only had 8 teams, and they were Louisville, Rutgers, Connecticut, South Florida, Cincinnati, Louisville, Pitt and Syracuse.

Of course it's irrelevant because Iowa has a national title anyway ( split with LSU in 58 )

The overall records weren't "slightly" different. Wisconsin had a sizable edge in wins (+56) and losses (-63).

I went and computed something. (I have nothing else to do).

I computed the 10 best current P5 teams, by winning pct, by decade beginning
with 1940. I did not include the current on-going decade which still has two
years to go.

After compiling the list I removed all the teams that have won a NC since 1936. (Poll era)

Now, that meant I removed 7 SEC teams, 7 Big10 teams, 6 ACC teams, 3 Big12 teams
and 2 Pac12 teams.

I took the remaining teams and listed what, if any, decade they were in the Top 10 in winning
pct.

SEC Ole Miss in the 50's and 60"s
Arkansas in the 60's
Missouri in the 60's.

ACC
VPI in the 00's

Big12
(None)

Big10
Rutgers in the 40's

Pac12
Ariz St in the 50's and 70's
UCLA in the 50's, 60's and 80's

Thus UCLA has to be the best to have never won a NC OR, at the minimum, they must be
in the conversation.
