Pirates To Sign Daniel Nava
Good insurance for the OF.

@navamind - will you root for the Pirates now? :suds:

He's like a contact-heavy Matt Joyce; keep him away from lefties, and he'll absolutely produce for you in limited exposure. Gives the team a chance to keep Luplow in AAA for a bit, since he's only gotten about 200 PA at the level, and could probably use the development time.

Pirates Acquire Bryce Brentz

They get another AAA OF filler from Boston.

Kid has big pop. Not sure it'll translate to the Majors, but a very worthwhile risk to take, especially since it's not actually a risk.

They signed Michael Saunders to a minor league deal, too. Less upside than Brentz, but he's not far removed from a very good season, and again it's only a minor league deal.

Truthfully I don't mind either deal. It gives them plenty of insurance in the OF.
From a Pirate perspective much better deals than:

Gomez: 1 year 4million
Maybin: 1 year 3.25million
or
Dyson 2 years 7.5 million

I would have taken those shots on Gomez or Dyson, but I think with Meadows and Luplow (and Frazier to an extent), I'd rather have the flexibility to shuffle guys up and down between AAA depending on performance and need. If they're going to sign someone to start, it should be someone who will make an impact (not could), who we could have for a couple years. Trading for Dickerson, for example, would be worthwhile. He's at worst a very good 4th OF, and at best an above-average regular. And he has one more year of arbitration after this. Gomez, Dyson, even Carlos Gonzalez, are high risks to perform, and are looking for (as shown in the deals signed) very short deals to try to bounce back.

Heh, they traded for Dickerson.

Daniel Hudson, Tristan Gray, and $1 M to the Rays for Dickerson. A very solid deal, I think.

Yeah getting Dickerson for a high priced reliever they didn't need is a very good deal. It helps eliminate the worry for the AAAA OF filler doesn't work out.

I wanted them to make that Austin Jackson deal. But I like what they did with Dickerson. The Nava/Brentz/Saunders thing seemed like throwing something at the wall and seeing it sticks. They could work but not a ton of upside maybe besides Brentz

We finally have a balanced lineup this year, forever we rolled with 2 lefties in the lineup, I think we can score runs this year if Marte and Polanco get it going.

Our rotation is the big question, 4 starters all with 1 full year in the bigs, there is a good chance that can go to hell real fast. If they stay healthy/productive, we should have a better year than last.
