Take a look at some of the pitchers Detroit could be selecting from, in order to fill out their pen. VerHagen, Dan Stumpf, Blaine Hardy, Joe Jimenez, Buck Farmer, Chad Bell, Zac Reininger, Johnny Barbato, Enrique Burgos. What a collection of junk.

Sad but true, Iffster.

And if/when there are injuries, you're down to the pitchers who COULDN'T BEAT OUT that pile of puke!

This season is gonna suck.

Hard.

Hopefully it sucks real bad.

Back to back years at the top of the draft, along with the pitching talent at High A and AA and we might get to root for a winner by 2022.

2018 NAME CHANGE FOR DETROIT?

In WW2, the Germans had the TIGER tank. Since Detroit's MLB entrant will be ''tanking'' this year...might I suggest a name change to the DETROIT TANKS.

Tigers started Alex Wilson yesterday in the annual exhibition against Florida Southern. While Gardenhire would prefer to have Wilson stay in his bullpen setup role, he's stated that Wilson may be needed for rotation depth. Wilson began his career as a starter in the Red Sox organization.

The Grapefruit league opener today will see lefty Ryan Carpenter starting against the Yankees. Carpenter, 27, is a Tampa Bay draftee that the Tigers signed to a minor-league contract, later putting him on the 40-man roster. He went 10-9 for AAA Albuquerque, with a 4.15 ERA and 161 strikeouts in 156 innings in what was considered a "hitter-friendly" PCL. (League ERA was 4.73.) Gardenhire said Carpenter is one of the few major league-ready starters slated to begin the season in Toledo, along with Buck Farmer and Travis Wood.

Jordan Zimmermann starts Saturday, with Matt Boyd and Artie Lewicki in split-squad games Sunday. Michael Fulmer starts on Monday.

Gardenhire has not scheduled Mike Fiers or Daniel Norris for starts yet, but stated both should be ready to go sometime next week. Norris had a final follow-up appointment for his groin injury that bothered him last year, and was given a clean bill of health.

Broncosmitty, I meant to tell you...

My brother was talking about a conversation he had at fantasy camp with Al Kaline regarding Jose Iglesias (your favorite shortstop!). Kaline said that, pretty much to a man, the entire Tiger clubhouse hates Iggy.

I'm not saying that they don't hate Iggy (could be, who knows), but I highly doubt Kaline throws that out there to a random person at a fantasy camp.

The Wilson thing bothers me.

He is one of maybe five or six guys that could have actual value in a trade. Don't lessen that by using him as a scab starter. Just sign some garbage off the scrap heap for that.

His brother was a professional baseball player.

and I assume Kaline can't stand Iggy.

I wasn't there, but I can't see that my bro would have any reason to lie to me about it.

Based on all of 5 spring training innings, it looks like recently-acquired Francisco Liriano will be in the starting rotation. This assures that Alex Wilson will be back in his bullpen setup role. If the season started today, Daniel Norris would be in Toledo, and Boyd would be the #5 starter.

Prediction for Tigers' Opening Day roster

Is Norris doing that poorly?

I think it's more aches and pains. Boyd has thrown 11 innings in ST, Norris only 5. The writer seemed to think they will proceed with caution on Norris the rest of ST, meaning he will need extended ST in Toledo. Both Norris and Boyd have one minor league option left.

Ah that makes more sense, I haven't paid a ton of attention to ST so far, gonna be a rough season.

Thanks for the update!

Well, all that said, and Mike Fiers is getting beaten like a rented mule this spring. 11.1 innings, 8 walks, 4 homers allowed, and a 9.53 ERA. Aaack.

Norris starts today. We'll see how many pitches they let him throw.

Posting the likely Tiger players heading north next week (based on reassignments made and stories I've been reading). Mike Fiers will not be making the trip, as he's now dealing with back stiffness and will start the season on the DL.
So here it is....sure to strike fear in the AL Central! :pound:

C James McCann
C/1B John Hicks

1B Miguel Cabrera
2B Dixon Machado
SS Jose Iglesias
3B Jaimer Candelario
UT Alexi Amarista

OF Nicholas Castellanos
OF Leonys Martin
OF Mikie Mahtook
OF JaCoby Jones/Victor Reyes

DH Victor Martinez

SP Jordan Zimmermann (R)
SP Michael Fulmer (R)
SP Francisco Liriano (L)
SP Matthew Boyd (L)
SP Daniel Norris (L)

RP Buck Farmer (R)
RP Daniel Stumpf (L)
RP Joe Jimenez (R)
RP Drew VerHagen (R)
RP Johnny Barbato (R)/Warwick Saupold (R)
RP-SU Alex Wilson (R)
RP-CL Shane Greene (R)

That is only 24 lines ... Gardenhire has not yet decided if he will carry a 5th outfielder or a 13th pitcher.

Blaine Hardy or Chad Bell likely will get added in April to give the bullpen an extra LHP. Hardy just started pitching again in game action this past Monday, after suffering a shoulder injury in late February. Bell pitched pretty well in ST, but has options and will start in Toledo.

Looks like infielder Niko Goodrum is hitting so well in ST, he will come north with the MLB team instead of Amarista.

Actually, I just saw Amarista was released.

Gardenhire is pretty well set on 12 pitchers, with Saupold making the MLB team ahead of Barbato, who has been dealing with elbow soreness. That means both Victor Reyes and JaCoby Jones will be in a Tiger uni to start the season.

Al Avila hasn't ruled out one more acquisition, stating he will be watching other teams' releases over the next couple of days. He's particularly looking to see if a worthwhile RP becomes available.
