As many of you know, I used to really shit on The Beatles and their music, but I have changed my opinion on them since them. I think I still view them as more of a cultural phenomenon and voice of the counterculture than an awesome rock/pop band based solely on music- but, their music is really good. Really, really good.

I think it would be cool to compare them to their American counterpart, The Beach Boys. For the purpose of this thread, we are voting for which band's music we enjoy more, so things like cultural impact or whether Brian Wilson was cuter than Paul McCartney do not matter (looking right at you @broncosmitty).

Also, we are looking at their works solely as bands, so any of The Beatles' solo work's or Wilson's solo work also don't apply.

I am far from the most qualified to answer this, but I give a slight edge to The Beach Boys. Even after Wilson's decline, I still think they put out great music. And I like their catalog as a whole slightly more than that of The Beatles'.

What about you guys?

I grew up listening to both of them, especially in high school and when I was in the Navy. I saw The Beach Boys in person one time. Both bands made some beautiful music but what the Beatles wrote and performed in their time , seemed to last longer, and made more of an impact, at least for me.

Beach Boys were entirely too one dimensional. Same twangy riffs and harmonies on every song.

Beatles were friends or roommates with Charlie Manson.

Easily The Beach Boys.

Is this really even a question? There's no comparison. The Beatles by far.

Listen to the Beach Boys "Little St. Nick" and if you don't want to stab yourself in the ears, then you have a John McCain level of pain tolerance.

I am not a huge Beatles guy, but I don't think this is a real contest.

I like both, but the Beatles have the edge. More depth.

Though Pet Sounds did throw some great ideas out there.

Not all threads can be gems guise...it's ok.

Sometimes you have to look at the grotesque to truly appreciate where you are and what you have.

I loved both.

But the answer is the Beatles.

Hell, the Beatles drove Brian Wilson insane. He tried to keep up and just couldn't, he had no help.
John, Paul, and George were song writing machines.

Look at what happened after the Beatles broke up.
Each one went on to great solo careers.

The Beach Boys, not so much.

They are both genius in their own way. In some ways the competition between the two made them both better and also worse. It's too bad Paul and Brian are not writing music now. I could not possibly choose between them. They are both awesome. It would be like picking between David Bowie and Roy Orbison or between the Rolling Stones and the Doors. It is the greatness of them all that makes music so great to begin with.

Some will win, some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on
