I'm not saying Riley is any one of those guys. Obviously there are flaws in the current system. That said, there is no downside to letting this play out.
i am in agreement with you except for the time frame. If we go 5-7 or worse again, are not competing and some rooms are gettng worse rather than better I don't think anyone would say he didn't have a chance.

The biggest problem that I read somewhere else is Nebraska no longer has an identity, and I'd add the patience to try and change to a different one. In hindsight we should never of tried to get away from Husker football after Solich. We were all spoiled by that 90's run and expected greatness EVERY season (and I'm not saying expecting perfection is a bad thing, just we have to deal with only being really good as not an absolute disaster that can't last more than a couple of seasons without us flying off the handle)

By not accepting taking a step back, our flying off the handle has totally fucked Nebraska football. We went with thinking we had to re-invent Husker football with the Clownahan error, learned painfully quickly that didn't work, so tried Pleeny to take us back to that identity, and he had some results, but his biggest success was with Clownsahans players and then the team was trending downward with his own recruits. We all saw it even though the record didn't show it. So then we move on from him (IMO rightfully) but then try to bring in another guy to redefine Husker football into something it's never been and he's starting with players "supposedly" with the talent more in line with the identity Pleeny had. So each time one of these coaches come in, their vision is completely different than the one prior to them, so they struggle with trying to run their system with players that don't have the required skills. We all flip the fuck out (rightfully so! LOL) and then they don't even have a legitimate chance to see if it would work. And even though I was originally optimistic about Riley, I no longer believe he was a good hire and I don't see his style ever succeeding here, but I have no idea how to get out of the situation gracefully. It would really be awesome if he "chose" to retire after next year. Maybe we could re-structure his contract to include a Huuuuuge retirement package....aka pay him is guaranteed money to retire without firing him! LOL
You make it sound like it was the fans hiring these people. I will give part credence to Bop but the ADs are hiring these guys and the problems outside of Osborne (who went with the fans cry) don't know Nebraska history, tradition or culture let alone our conferences. We need someone who will come in and not necessarily bring us back to our roots but go with what works here. That is why I supported Riley originally because he was supposed to be able to develop players. Unfortunately we aren't seeing that.

Anyway I digress, the wrong ADs are why we are getting the wrong coaches.

Dabo, Dantonio, and Gundy would have been fired in their 3rd year At Nebraska.

The media and fan base would have been losing their shit on Franklin in year 3 when he started (2-2) with a loss to Pitt and a 10 - 49 blowout loss to Michigan.
Except with Franklin you could see the problems between coach and qb. He got his qb in and the sky was the limit. Riley got his qb in and...

But they had a huge hurdle to overcome, but they didn't try and completely re-invent the identity and style of football they played. Also, their obstacles were totally understandable by the fan base and thus had patience. Our problems our self inflicted set-backs all the time. (Not saying that Penn St. University isn't responsible for how they got there, but it's a bit different)

I understand what you are saying about Riley and if he doesn't make a bowl, I understand firing him. I'm just saying each time we do this, it makes hiring a really good coach that may be able to bring us back that much harder. We are then left with trying to find a lottery ticket coach that just hasn't had a shot so no-body knows the guys capabilities yet.
Here is some food for thought. Last week a defensive player was only allowed one mistake then that person got pulled out of the game - contrast that with all the mistakes made on offense with no consequences. You would think a Head Coach with the experience of a Mike Riley would see that and have things equal for all players. That is not happening at Nebraska. I wondered why all week Damon Benning kept saying no consequences over and over and now you and I know exactly why it was so.

Here's a question for ye all, and depending on the outcome of our game today and UCF's game maybe I'll start a poll thread tonight.....

But if UCF goes wild this year and wins 10 or 11 games or so, how many of you would be ready to dive in on Frost?

As of now obviously it's a huge risk and it's exactly what everybody wants to avoid doing, but then again a guy who can take a piece of shit and turn it into a gold brick in a few years is exactly what most programs are looking for.

Also not sure why Gundy is in the conversation.

Only Dabo could garner that kind of money.

The other 3 haven't earned anything close to that.

He's been on the verge of the national title game and is in the CFB playoff hunt this year. The dollar figure may be a bit of an exaggeration, but you know what I'm getting at.

Mike Riley just needs to go on a rant at a press conference and we're golden

HCMR should do us all a favor and retire. Saves him from being fired, saves the university the headache of firing him.

A dignified ending.
