Husker Athletic Director Shawn Eichorst has been fired, University of Nebraska-Lincoln chancellor Ronnie Green announced Thursday.

The decision comes after a 1-2 start for the football team and a loss at home Saturday to Northern Illinois. Eichorst, who was hired in October 2012, has about $1.7 million remaining on his contract that runs through June 2019.

Here are five people Lee Barfknecht thinks may be under consideration to be Nebraska's next athletic director:

Trev Alberts
Trev Alberts has been the athletic director at the University of Nebraska at Omaha since 2009. He starred as a defensive end at Nebraska in the early 1990s. Following his senior season in 1993, he was awarded the Dick Butkus Award and the Jack Lambert Trophy as the top college linebacker. He also was recognized as a consensus first-team All-American, after recording 15 quarterback sacks, 21 tackles for loss and 38 quarterback hurries. He played professionally for three years with the Indianapolis Colts after being the fifth overall pick in the 1994 NFL Draft. The former television commentator was selected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2015.

Ed Stewart
Ed Stewart is the Big 12 assistant commissioner for football and student services. He joined the Big 12 Conference staff after spending seven years at the University of Missouri, where he served as associate director of athletics for administration. Stewart is a former All-American linebacker at Nebraska in 1994. The Chicago native also was named Big Eight Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 1994.

Chris Del Conte
Chris Del Conte was appointed Texas Christian University's director of intercollegiate athletics in October of 2009. Under Del Conte, five TCU head coaches (Gary Patterson, football; Jim Schlossnagle, baseball; Karen Monez, rifle; David Roditi, men's tennis; Haley Schoolfield, equestrian) have been named National Coach of the Year. Ten sports — baseball, women's basketball, football, women's golf, rifle, men's swimming and diving, men's tennis, women's tennis, women's indoor and outdoor track and field — have won conference titles under Del Conte, who has seen 17 of 21 sports represented in NCAA postseason play.

Jim Phillips
Jim Phillips became Northwestern's director of intercollegiate athletics and recreation in 2008. He is one of 10 children from a middle-class Chicago family. He was elected as the inaugural chairman of the NCAA Division I Council in February 2015. During a two-and-a-half year term, he served as the first-ever sitting athletic director on the NCAA Board of Directors and Board of Governors. In March 2017, he was appointed to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Selection Committee, Northwestern's first representative in 50 years. He also was appointed to the Fiesta Bowl Board of Directors in early June.

Kevin White
Kevin White is the athletic director at Duke University. He has held this position since May 30, 2008. He held similar positions at Notre Dame, Arizona State, Tulane, the University of Maine and Loras College. As a coach, White coached track and field at Southeast Missouri State from 1981-1982 and was a cross country assistant at Central Michigan from 1976-1980. Notre Dame football struggled during White's tenure. Notre Dame football teams have started 0–3 only two times in the school's history, both under White. Those came in 2001, the season after White negotiated an extension of coach Bob Davie's contract and 2007, two seasons after White gave coach Charlie Weis a 10-year contract extension. White also was responsible for the hiring of George O'Leary, who was fired a week later after falsifying his resume, and Tyrone Willingham, who started 8-0 but finished 13-15, with eight of those losses coming by 22 points or more, more than any coach in school history.

What I don't understand is why they keep these coaches on board. It's a foregone conclusion at this point that Riley is gone. So why wait? Start the coaching search now and give your new coach the most possible time to get a class together. Hire someone with the premise that they'll take over when the season is done. Hell, you don't even need to make it public yet.

Also, I think Nebraska is still capable of getting big names to come there. Problem is, they royally screwed it up last time. They need to make a perfect hire this time around or they could death spiral for a while.

I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that Riley gets fired. Eichorst being fired is not completely about Riley. Tim Miles basketball program has faltered. That is with a new state of the art arena. Darin Erstad's baseball program has faltered. That is competing in the Big 10. Not known to be a baseball conference. Eichorst was asleep at the wheel. His expectations were de minimis.
Compare Shawn Eichorst as an AD to Chris Del Conte at TCU. Night and Day when it comes to the success of their programs as a whole.

That's a fucking AD right there. Eichorst was a failure and all of his coaches are now on notice.

Who says thats not what they are doing? There has been some bumbling boneheaded mistakes no doubt, i think the biggest knee jerk reaction was Frank Solich but it wasnt all just W-L either just like some of the other fires. He who shall not be named who took over after Solich now that was the absolute worst hire imaginable. At this point We have been in wait and see mode since end of 03. Bo couldnt beat his big game blues, mikey cant seem to be ruthless enough and cut dead weight when it isnt working out (if he was more proactive rather than reactive it would be a different story for ol mikey)

Riley could probably buy another year by winning either 3 or 4 of his last 5 games.

Purdue
Northwestern
Minnesota
Penn St
Iowa

We entered the season with a new DC (Diaco) knowing/expecting there to be an early season growth period there. They did exactly that in their first 2 games (Ark St & Oregon). They played well against NIU. They've only given up 1 TD in the last 5 quarters. Where we made a mistake was expecting the offense to pick up the slack while the D was in it's new system learning phase. The offense played pretty well against Ark St. (46 pts). The defense gave up 36 pts. The offense put up 14 pts in the first half against Oregon. The defense gave up 42. Why the offense broke down against NIU is a head scratcher. It's likely a mental issue. They played like they didn't give a damn.
The season is not a foregone conclusion. Football games can be won 14-10, 17-14, 10-7, etc..Especially in the Big 10 as they still play 3 yds and a cloud of dust.

That list has to be the bottom of the list..... i dont see any of them being the guy to make the right decisions across the board and put pressure on coaches (and lets face it AD needs to pressure themselves too, Eichorst didnt do it, funny thing anybody watch The Strain?)

Eichorst was not the right guy, he NEEDED to be fired before he could garner any momentum with Boosters and Fans. Last time we fired the AD mid season the HC was fired

Like I said. If Riley can win either 3 or 4 of those last 5, and make a bowl, all bets are off.

Rutgers
Illinois
Wisconsin
Ohio St
Purdue
Northwestern
Minnesota
Penn St
Iowa

Win 5 of those and they're bowl eligible. Expectations are ZERO right now.

Shouldn't matter. He's never going to get better, just lost to a MAC school and expectations are Zero. He's gone.

Though it would be hilarious if you kept him another year. Literally just a wasted year until he eventually gets fired.

The last time we fired an AD, Nebraska had lost to Oklahoma St.

LOL. Let that sink in.

It would take major moves to not be fired, miracle even some would say. Only way i can get "on board" with MR sticking around would be a 9-0 run, pretty sure i have better odds of being struck by lightning on a sunny day.

Chris Del Conte, TCU.

Ed Stewart probably not, did not stand up for Nebraska during Big 12 time, but did provide inside info until he was cut off by Emperor Beebe. But if all else fails, he might get it.

Chris Del Conte some smart poster posted about him on Page 4

Jim Phillips impressive. He really loves living in Chicago. Same time zone, 9 hour drive or a 10 hour drive if he wants to visit family.

That is you. Not the boosters and admin. As of now Eichorst is the fall guy.
If the defense gets going and they finish winning 6 out of the last 9, all bets are off. There may not be a coach available that's worth the gamble come Nov 25th.
As of now, of the Top 10 paid coaches there are 5 that are absolutely worth their money (Saban, Meyer, Fisher, Swinny, Petersen). They aren't leaving their programs no matter how much is offered.
Of the other 7, at least 4 are unproven (Harbaugh, Franklin, Herman).
There are 3 that aren't worth half of what they're being paid (Sumlin, Malzahn, Ferentz).

Throwing big money at a coach rarely pays off. Riley is like #40 in coaches salaries. There are a lot of coaches between those Top 10 salaries and #40 that aren't worth half of what they're earning.

I know that is just ME and i will stick to it and as such unless he some how loses while looking phenomenal ill retain my position on him not being able to bring the right skill/talent assistants to coach these guys.

How much does Riley make? Nebraska is going to have to throw around 4.5-5 million to whoever will become the next coach IMO. It would money well spent IMO as well.

$2.9 million

Whose on your list 'worthy' of $4.5 to $5 million though?

I listed the 5 and they aren't leaving their successful programs.
Everyone else is a gamble IMO.

If Riley somehow finds a way to win 6 of his last 9 (7-5) and there is not a sure thing for $4.5 - $5 million, I could see the admins holding for another season.
