Or hasn't won one in the "Modern Era" of CFB.

Teams that have come close and failed:
KSU
Oregon
Virginia Tech
West Virginia
Oklahoma State
Baylor
South Carolina, kind of.
SMU, that cost them

I think for a team that has never won an NC to get into the playoffs, they would almost certainly need to go undefeated AND have a set of circumstances set up in their favor, like most of the name brand teams have multiple losses.

In today's environment I'm going with Virginia Tech.
Until Oregon can show me that they can get back into the national picture, they're out.

The answer is obviously UConn.

How is this even a thread?

Baylor. They've somehow survived the scandal, hired good coach, and are still recruiting decent. Once the coach has some success, recruiting will pick up enough and they might actually be back towards the top of the big 12.

Boise got close I think. The one year that they lost to Nevada I think they were up to #3 with two games to go.

Dang, this is a good question. I think the Pac 12 becomes tougher and tougher over the next few years. USC, Washington, Washington State, Stanford, Colorado and the almost inevitable resurgence of Oregon all could make the Pac 12 contend for the best conference in College Football in the next 4-5 years. If I had to choose one team it would probably be Washington. Yeah they've lost a couple key pieces but I think they will be able to just plug and play with their roster. The thing that can derail them is WHEN Oregon comes back from their slump.

Depends on the term modern era I guess. If it could mean 15+ years ago I would go with Miami or Pitt. I can see ACC Coastal being the old Big East teams of the late 90s / early 00s where VT, sPitt and Miami contend for the top 5 and/or position themselves for a playoff spot.

Notre Dame has to be up there. They could bounce back at any time.

Not sure if the NCAA has grounds, did they break any NCAA rules?

South Carolina (especially now that Clemson has put the in state pressure on them good call)
Oklahoma State

I kind of put all of those at the same level, it could happen in a magical type of year with just the right coach/players/breaks. I don't put KState in there due to Snyders age but wouldn't have a problem if someone wanted to add them while he IS there.

I think A&M could do it a lot easier than those others up top and maintain that type of status due to the in state recruiting advantages and money. I'd prob put them at 1 if they get their coaching situation in order.
