I've done CBS (yrs ago) it was $40, winner take all ($200). Won a couple of times but always had trouble getting paid (check by mail took months), besides they were making a killing ($40x12=480, pay out $200). Also, have done a few with Yahoo which was much better ($25 and up) payed 3 top three ($100 and up), they use paypal and you get your account credited within a week. Because of some stupid law, poeple in Florida are no longer allowed to do their pay leagues. Did RTS last yr without much success (injuries killed me). Theirs are all ppr ($25 and up) and really wasn't properly prepared for it. They use paypal as well.
All were pretty competitive, although you'll generally have a couple that fold by mid-season. If I were going to recommend one, it would be Yahoo.

I will probably set up a league on rtsports.com again. They have a lot of different options to do, and last year I did one of the $29.95 All American Leagues and I won it. 1st place wins $200.00 and 2nd place wins $50.00. I cashed out half of the winnings, did a playoff fantasy team for $19.95 and I still have $80.05 left. I set up my own public league and you can invite people you know to join, but anybody else can join also because it is a public league, so it's first come first serve. You don't have any options to set scoring or anything like that though, so you are at the mercy of their scoring which is PPR and 4 point QB touchdowns but it's 1 point for every 20 passing yards. 4 teams make the playoffs (3 division winners and 1 wild card) and it's head-to-head. Let me know if you're interested after you check out the site and I'd be happy to send you an invite when I create the league.

Took third in a fantrax public league, 50 buy in won it back. I think they payout better than most as well.
Most owners were active, only a couple that didn't play all yr.
I did one with big bench that didn't allow trading, so you had to live off the wire.

I do some (not on fantrax) but only ever done it with people I know (or leagues where I know at least a few people and they know everybody). Activity is pretty good. Being able to trash talk people you know is always fun.

I won one that disbanded a year ago and was paid in cash.
