Wings appear to have reached a bit with both their first pick (#9 overall) in Rasmussen and their second pick (#38 overall) in Lindstrom. A bit underwhelming with the players that were available at the time....

Red Wings' 2017 draft class breakdown

I know this board isn't overly active with Wings chatter, but I'm game to discuss if anyone else is.

I will add in, I really like one of their 3rd rounders in goalie Petruzzelli, right spot to take him and he was very highly thought of. Big athletic goalie that could be the starter in a few years.

Wings may have reached a little with Rasmussen, but he definitely fits a dire need of this team. Best case scenario may have been to trade down a few spots, pick up another pick and still get Rasmussen, but those types of trades aren't always available and there's never a guarantee the guy you want will still be there. I'm not the least bit upset about the pick.

Wings have historically done well scouting Sweden. Obviously, the team's scouts like him better than central scouting does. They probably got the sense from other team scouts that Lindstrom was undervalued, so they pulled the trigger early to snag him.

Beyond Lindstrom, they drafted five total defensemen. I'm pleased with that. If we can get two of those five to the big club it was a good day.

You get anything after the third round to the NHL (except a goalie) and you've done well. The Wings have done a good job of scouting Sweden in the past but it is much more heavily scouted by all teams now. I don't think we've pulled an NHL player from there since 2008 (Nyquist), though I have high hopes for Axel Holmstrom.

Most national media outlets have given the Wings a poor 2017 draft grade. Grading drafts immediately after they happen is dumb. Fans and media are getting their panties twisted because of it is dumber.

It's impossible to know how good the Wings actually did for at least another five years.

I guarantee no one was talking about how good the Wings' 2009 draft was. They had no first round picks, but six of seven draftees made the NHL.

It's the nature of drafts in all sports to be graded out. Sure, it's premature, but one can certainly look at the approach that teams have.

It's interesting that the 2009 draft produced 6 guys that have played in the NHL, but that was 8 years ago, and only one has scored more than 20 goals for his career in the NHL. Is that all we are looking for in a draft class? Do you really consider that a great class? Ferraro and Nesty were waived by Detroit, AA is back in Sweden, Callahan is an AHL player. Jensen I guess could make it as a #5/6 defenseman, but I honestly think the Wings are over-valuing his play. He does move the puck, which we sorely lack from the blue line. I like Tatar, he's one of my favorite Wings, but he isn't anything special, an offensive wing that isn't very physical, puts up 20-25 goals a season.

In a way, I think you are shining a spotlight on what I consider to be the Wings' problem. They tend to draft safe picks, guys that have a good chance of getting to the NHL but not being high end. High floor, low ceiling kind of players. This year's draft screams that. It gets you complimentary players but what we lack are the elite drivers that can make a championship team.

RE 2009: no I don't think it was a great class. Good yes. It's rare to have 6 guys make it to the NHL. The example was just an illustration of how you never know how guys are going to develop, so getting caught up in the immediate hype is foolish. [By the way, the Blues just declined the qualifying offer for the first overall 2012 draft pick... You never know...]

RE Jensen: I completely agree that the Wings are overvaluing him.

RE drafting high end guys: the Wings have kinda had to draft safe picks because they've made the playoffs every year for a quarter century. High end talent has routinely been gone by the time the Wings were on the clock. Beyond the very top of the draft, who knows how guys are going to develop...

RE this draft: ...could very well be another 2011 draft... decent crop of useful players, but no stars. We'll see.

One final note... I saw Rasmussen compared favorably to Dave Andreychuk. I'll definitely take that!

I think when you draft later, you need to take risks on occasion, Kuznetsov instead of Sheahan for instance. Sheahan was the safe, North American college player. Kuznetsov had questions on whether he would stay in Russia. Sometimes you need to take a chance. Of course that one is easier said in hindsight, I fully admit that, but how much better would the Wings be if they had made the more aggressive move? And yes, it can backfire, no doubt about it.

Maybe it's just two different schools of thought, you view it one way, I view it another. I think the Wings were enamored with the streak more than with winning the past several years, which makes the rebuild that much longer and more painful.

Forgot to comment on this, I haven't seen anyone say that but hell yes I would take that.
