I really like chy's lineup a lot. Obviously some parts could move around, maybe laughton or vecchione instead of weise. But that crew i like.

Only thing is, i think they can do better with 5.6 mil (ish) than Elliot in net. I'd rather see them spend that money on a better goalie, assuming his contract isn't more than 2 years.

PS - i'm still betting that Myers takes one of the d-spots as a bit of a darkhorse :)
Mase is the best UFA and made $4.1 last year but there does not seem to be any interest in bringing him back. Miller is a UFA but I hope Hexy stays away. Bernier is the only other possibility and I think Elliot and Mase are better.

I'm not sure they're going to do any better than Elliot or Bernier at this point, unfortunately. I don't want Mason back. He's not a guy to win with, head-wise. Let him go whine and make excuses somewhere else.

If they offer McDavid this kind if $$$,how much is Crosby worth?
He's been at the top/or near top for all of his 12 years, and was still in hunt for MVP this year.

These kind of contracts burn my ass,and I hope it blows up in Edmontons' face.
I'm not sure why they went that high but I'm guessing that is the only way to get him for 8 years. They probably would rather keep him than win makes no sense hockey wise but he'll sell tickets keeping Edmonton viable. They also took another midget in the first round so Edmonton will be Edmonton....

That makes me a little more interested in Bernier. Last year he was $4.1 but the article suggest he may take $3.1. If that's the case, then kick the tires.
Bernier was great down the stretch in Anaheim I'd definitely take a look. He's young enough to still turn things around.

Exactly. Edmonton wanted to get him signed for as long as possible (8 years is the max in the CBA) to lock up the best (or close to it) player in hockey.

The other option would be a bridge type contract, sign him i think it's 2 years, to the last year where he'd be RFA at the end. If the cap goes up ~3 mil per season, as it has been, and he keeps improving, he might ask for the max. Which would be 16 mil / year.

I think this deal makes sense for Edmonton.

Something that gets overlooked is G's face off abilities. Last year he was 56% and Couts was a close second at 55%. Schenn was only 47%. I also think opponents still focus their top defensive players when G's line is out. Giroux and Gostisbehere both underwent right hip and bilateral lower abdominal procedures last year. Ghost started slowly but improved as the season progressed. G played all 82 games and was consistently underwhelming all season. His best points month was October when he had 2 goals and 10 assists in 10 games. When Patrick was drafter, Schenn fell out of our top six forwards. 2 1st was a good haul at that point.
Where do we end up picking?

In the last 5 drafts St. Louis has picked 20, 28, 25, 21 and 22 for an average of 23. TK went 24 in 2015. Also, having 2 1st makes it much easier to move up.

St Louis dumped a scrub on us and picked up a PP specialist so barring injury figure 28 should be where they will be picking. TK was ranked way higher than 24 and fell in the draft that doesn't happen every year.

2018 is supposed to be a really deep draft.
I know its supposed to be really deep but i cant see finding a top 6 in the mid to late 20's We may get one with our first round pick which will be around 15.

There are only 6 spots in the top 6. Patrick, Giroux, Voracek, Simmonds are locks. Konecny and Lindblom have clear top 6 potential. Ratcliffe is projected as a top 6 LW. Rubstov and Frost also have top 6 potential. If we take one at 10-15 next year, how many do we need? Maybe that pick helps to move up and get a true 1 LW, which Schenn was never going to be, as chy suggested.

Here's the reality. None of us know better than Hextall. He's earned the benefit of the doubt thus far until he shows otherwise. If Schenn remains a true 60+ point player, Lehtera proves the be the 2nd coming of the 2nd coming of Umberger and the 2 firsts are busts, then I'll be ready to be more critical of his moves. As it stands, what I see is a guy who seems to understand what it takes to build a true Cup contender, not just a playoff team. I'm willing to ride this out for another 2-3 years before I start demanding deep playoff runs. It will take time for the young D to gel. A prospect goalie should have emerged by then. And, the forwards look to be rounding into shape nicely, on paper at least. If this team still stinks in 18-19 or 19-20 I'll be right there eating crow and admitting the naysayers were right. Until then, I think the criticisms are misdirected.

Agreed.

Do we really want a goalie that is seemingly allergic to competition and weak in the clutch?

I want a guy who plays with a little more intensity and will battle hard night in and night out no matter what.

I don't think there are many teams (or any) that would've given us two 1st's for Schenn, so eating the two year contract of Lehtera is not a problem. Hexy made a swift deal and I don't blame him for it at all. We have either the extra 1st in a strong 2018 draft or a 2019 1st with potential 3rd round pick looming there too.

We got the player we wanted in Frost as well, so it hurts temporarily, but we have to trust the process here.

There should still be enough talent on this team to get into the playoffs, we just need Hakstol to do what he does with young players and mold them into shape.

That's great we have to wait another two to three more years. The same old story just keep waiting and waiting. Plus if we didn't get super lucky and get the second pick how many more years would we have to wait for him to build this cup contender 5, 6 ,7 or maybe 8

1st 3 years cleaning up the Holmgren cap mess, next 3 years to give his moves and draft picks time to mature and gel. After that, he's either been successful or not. I'm happy with his player moves as GM. My biggest concern is Hakstol.

1975. We can wait a little longer. I sure as franking heck don't want to go back to the short-sighted win now every year mentality of the past. That's exactly the reason it's been since 1975.

The Blackhawks, Kings and Pens all put time in as bottom feeders before winning multiple Cups.

When we had a team built to do some damage this season while our young stars came along nicely im hugely disappointed that another year is going by while being on the fringe or the 8th seed .. Clean house if we are giving up another season or three.

We'll have to agree to disagree, and that's ok. :suds:
