You really think they are going to be nonexistent again this season Cup? I know the defense is a mess, but with the potential offense we can muster, you dont think its enought to possibly do something?

well i mean it took mcdavid a year to get the oilers to the playoffs and i dont even think we have the foundation of forwards that the oilers had to help him. we missed the playoffs by what 25pts? thats a lot of wins and we will have a lot of rookies in the lineup. being in the best division in hockey certainly doesn't help esp with the flyers landing the #2 pick.

i'm hopefully but realistic. maybe we fight for 8th until the deadline and then sell pieces that we can and then make a jump next year

Out of our free agents I bring back Kinkaid and let Josefson/Bennett walk. Although I suspect Bennett will be brought back.

Isn't it a pretty similar cap hit as Crosby's deal was percentage wise when he signed? It didn't seem to cripple Pens

well for the longest time the pens were a meh team. only recently with the west getting weaker have they suddenly become cup champions again. their previous cup win was when? 08? almost 10 years ago. they finally got the right combo of "cheap/interchangeable" parts like rust sheary murray etc

I wish it would happen since we have the resources and ability to do it without really sacrificing the future at all but it probably won't, bring in 2 defenseman.

New Guy-New Guy
Greene-Severson
Moore-Mueller-Santini

Sign one of the Caps D, you'll overpay but so what, we have cap for days and Clowe, Camm, Greene will all be off the books by the time we need to re-sign anyone.

Then trade Kovy and change (picks, prospects) for another.

Does this make us a Cup contender? No. Does this get us within striking range? 100%.

I think it's extra important to bring in higher end D talent for a couple of reasons. Obviously we're weak back there but also because Andy Greene will be 35 to start the season. How much longer can we rely on this guy? After him there's a dropoff to the younger guys who aren't there yet.

You need to ease Greene's workload, soften the blow when he's out of here and buy our young guys some more time to get their legs under them.

Last few seasons, we seem to always hope for one of the younger D guys to step up and that does not happen. Severson for example is too inconsistent.
Then the guys we brought in like Lovejoy were average at best.
Only consistent one back there to me was Moore and he is not a number 1 guy.

Well this time around, Santini looks to be a solid from the go. Hope he pans out!

I expect a dip in Greene's performance.... I already see myself yelling.

Would certainly make it a lot less painful to watch compared to last season

I still think Greene is good. But he should be playing 18-20 minutes a night, not 22+ minutes per night.

Saw that, I honestly don't believe anything at this point regarding Kovy. I'll believe it when it happens.

Really it's just a wait and see with young d. Larson really took off in Edmonton maybe this is the year severson puts it all together. Moore has the offense tools and can skate but man that's wasted on such a meh d man.

I still think kovy comes to the NHL so saying he does whatever we get asset wise from him is probably the extent of our moves this summer. There really isn't much out there and we are coming off a horrible year what ufa would want to come here.

Carlson is a ufa next year and the caps have to sign rfa kuznetsov next year. Seeing what mcdavid and draistail will get can they afford both? Year after that eckman Larson and Erik Karlson are ufa. That's so far off but damn those would be nice pieces to get as these kids come into their own. Mclode nico John q will be two years in by then.

Not sure I'm excited about the kinkaid deal he's a meh backup but I honestly rather have given it to wedgewood. We know what we can get out of kinkaid and it isn't work shattering. Maybe wedgewood surprises everyone takes off? I rather go with the unknown on a rebuilding team hoping to catch lightning in the bottle then play it safe with kinkaid.

after the kinkaid deal is up its Blackwood time to backup Cory and then take over three years later when corys deal is up. People still upset at that pick last year? Shero gave us a great foundation.

Outside of 2 bad games Kinkaid played pretty well, was pretty much what you want/need in a backup. Wedgewood I think is a lateral move, they've had years to see what both bring to the table and have consistently gone with Kinkaid so that's good enough for me.

Loved the Mackenzie Blackwood pick, especially since it was a bonus, we traded the other 2nd that year for Palmieri.
