If you think about it long enough, it makes a lot of sense.

The Sixers receive:

Carmelo Anthony

The Knicks receive:

Jahlil Okafor
Sergio Rodriguez

That doesn't make any sense at all. Sixers need to continue to build around Embiid/Simmons, not trade for a guy who will be 33 at the beginning of next season.

It makes a whole ton of sense . . . if you think about it.

I did think about, for like half a second, and it makes no sense. Look I'm not saying Okafor is a long term solution or anything, but trading for Melo is crazy. He'll just disrupt everything. If we're going to trade Okafor, which I hope we do at some point, I don't want it to be for someone that brings baggage with them and is clearly past his prime. Just need to stay the course.

Okafor is reportedly not tradeworthy, except maybe to a team like New York with Phil Jackson wanting to run the triangle offense and Okafor a good candidate to fill in one of those spots. There are plenty of teams that would give up some value for Melo but not every team has a young, offensively gifted center that fits exactly what Phil Jackson likes to do offensively. Does that mean a three-team trade is a better idea? Maybe. But the Melo uncertainty in New York creates the possibility that we could move Okafor for value.

I just don't want Melo on this team. I don't think he offers this team much value. He's a ball stopping wing, that can't create for others, and it'll only be worse once Simmons is worked into the mix. We need to run through Embiid and Simmons once he's healthy. Also we'll be adding another top 10 pick(the 6ers) and hopefully another top 6 pick(the Lakers). We should use our assets to get someone better than Melo, honestly.

For NY.....

I certainly don't want Melo either and think this would be a horrible idea. That being said, you were willing to drive Okafor to the airport to go to Chicago. I don't like Okafor either. What would you want for Okafor? He's a year removed from the number 3 pick. He's certainly not at Anthony Bennett level bust (of course, he shouldn't have been picked there to start with). I only ask this as there was that probably laughed off the second it was proposed trade of Love for Anthony. We want to get rid of Okafor and don't think he's worth .10 on the dollar. How do you solve a problem like Jahlil?

There's a couple factors at play.

What is the perceived value of Noel?
How can we leverage Okafor to drive up the price for Noel?
Somebody is going to pay Noel, and I dont' want it to be the Sixers.
$18M/year for a backup C playing 18-24 minutes is not good.

I would rather keep Okafor, if only because he is the cheaper of the two.
That being said, I would not have a problem trading both of them for the right price.
I'm still curious to see if Okafor is a liability surrounded by Embiid/Simmons/Covington/Luwawu/draft pick, ie elite defenders. Better guard defense could help the decision making process for Okafor. You basically have two seasons to figure out what Okafor is, so he does have time to work on things.

At this point, I would be content with mid-1st rounders for either of them.
Sixers could also take back overpaid players for a season or two to get other decent players and draft picks.
Then just outright release the overpaid players, unless they think they can contribute.

Carmelo Anthony apparently was open to being traded to the 76ers this season. Time to revisit this idea.

Okafor and some overpaid scrub for Carmelo. Let's get it done. He can just stand at the line and nail open jumpers for us. Perfect fit.

If you can get a pick or player along with him, why not just buy him out and/or waive him?

Why buy him out or waive him when you need shooters?

I just don't think he's the right veteran presence for a young team.
All the advanced analytics show his last season as well off of his career averages.
36.5% from 3 is nice, but 43.3% from the field? He's not a shooter, he's a high volume scorer.

Now, that being said, he does bring some 1v1 scoring that might be needed late in the shot clock.
Maybe having some talent around him would allow him to be a much more efficient offensive player.
Certainly not going to rule that out.

But, I would be more interested in acquiring another asset than in actually watching Anthony play.

I agree. Anthony potentially filling one of the team's needs is just icing of the cake. This notion that Carmelo is toxic just doesn't jive well with me. He is relaxed and easy going, I think he could fit in anywhere.

All of this may be moot, though, as it seems that Anthony and the Knicks may be negotiating a buy out. The Knicks are, of course, shopping him around still.

Shoot. My dreams may be dashed. I didn't realize that Phil Jackson was out in New York.

Because he's lazy and won't run and we're gonna be a high energy and running team.

You must have gone to Cuse or something.
