I keep hearing that the Sixers want to trade into the 1st. Is there any history of trading multiple 2nds to get into the late 1st? It seems like the NBA is a tough draft to trade up in without involving a player/contract.

It happens a fair amount, but it's not like the NFL where there is a small dropoff. I think second rounders are dirt cheap in terms of contracts so some teams like them, and they are useful for stashing foreign players. But to get even a first Philly probably has to trade three seconds or a couple of seconds and a player.

What the Sixers have this year is loads of cap space and we're a year away from signing big free agents aside from a JJ Reddick. We can take on a 1 year big expiring contract from a team needing to open up immediate space to add free agents ... maybe a team in the 20's who wouldn't mind moving back for some 2nd rounders and cap space?

I really like Saric to come off the bench to give them an extra burst of energy on the 2nd team. He'd still play a lot with the starters but I think I'd rather go with Embiid/Simmons/Covington/Reddick/Fultz and then roll with Holmes, Saric, Henderson, TLC, Stauskas, Bayless, and McConnell on the second team until you figure out which rotation works the best there.
I like Saric on the second unit as well. There will still be overlaps, but I like that it would give them another distributor.

Philly is still involved in a lot of trade speculation. Some talk they will package their multiple second rounders to move into the first round, and even talk of a potential Kevin Love trade. I doubt the latter as they are building youth, but I could see a trade into the late first for sure.
I would hope they don't trade for Love, as I can see Colangelo giving up a lot to show that he brought in a vet "star" stretch 4 to play alongside Embiid

I could see BC doing that too and it would be terrible. Thankfully, he has talked about maintaining cap flexibility so I doubt he would want to take Love's contract on.

Portland has 3 1sts. Keep an eye out for them.

Minnesota will be a strong contender in the West now with Butler going there.

Wouldn't mind the sixers trade up to get Giles, if only so that he can be our token 1st round pick to miss the season with an injury.

"Boston gets the No. 3 pick in Thursday's draft from Philadelphia, plus either a first-rounder in 2018 and 2019. If the Los Angeles Lakers hold a pick between No. 2 and No. 5 next season, Boston gets that one. If not, Philadelphia will send Boston either its own first-rounder in 2019 or Sacramento's first-rounder that year."

I haven't found details on this part yet
Anyone know if this means that Boston gets the lower of the picks or vice versa?

If it turns out that Sixers get to choose which pick is sent to Boston (if the Lakers pick next year does not meet the draft criteria) Sixers could be making out like bandits

Imagine -
#1 pick this year
Lakers end up drafting #1 next year - Sixers pick
either Sac's pick or Sixers end up with #1 pick in 2019 - Sixers pick

That being said - I would hope that by 2019 the Sixers will not be in a position to have their own lottery ball bounce to #1

From what I read, Boston would get the better of the Sacramento/Philly pick in 2019, unless that pick is #1 - in that case they would get the worse of the two.

Watched the strengths and weaknesses vids for Jonah Bolden. He needs to build strength in his lower body as his defense really needs work. He gets boxed out pretty easily and his defensive effort/intensity leaves a lot to be desired. That said, I really like his offensive upside ... at 6'10" he can sky with long arms and has NBA range shooting 3's. Can really handle for a big man, but that seems to also get him in trouble as he sometimes forgets that he's not a 6'2 Guard. Good instincts getting offensive rebounds ... has an excellent feel for where the ball ends up and using length and hops to get put backs and jams.

Bottom line: High upside on the Offensive End as a stretch 4, but unless he puts in some serious work on the Defensive End he won't get much quality playing time. Getting stronger in his lower body would go a long way in him eventually getting floor time. Love his upside on the Offensive end once coaches refine his role.

Pretty underwhelming second round selections IMO, but we all knew they were likely looking for stash players and trades since they could not accommodate that many players anymore.

The Latvian big sounds like a good stash candidate, and I think it was a decent use of assets in terms of using the OKC 2020 first rounder.

This draft is ultimately all about Fulz of course. If he can be a good scoring guard, like a Kyrie Irving level player, it will dramatically improve the Sixers.

We basically gave up nothing to get him . . . so it's hard to not like the trade. He's an intriguing prospect. From what I can tell, he needs to improve in a few areas but I saw him drain a few deep jumpers and like the potential for him to be able to further develop his jumpshot.

The trade up was good, I agree, I just hope we don't regret passing on Hart there.

Reading between the lines the big concerns seem to be about his character and attitude.

Here is a good positive-spin piece on him:

There are only two players in this draft other than Bolden who shot more than 40 percent from 3 while still averaging at least one block and one steal per game. One is Markelle Fultz, the likely no. 1 overall pick, and the other is Derrick White, a senior guard from Colorado who may end up being taken in the first round.

Yup....I am with you.

This team is going to be great. I don't expect playoffs because they have to learn to play together but in three years this team can be competing for a title.

I expect playoffs.

Brown is going to be a great coach.

They were 10-5 in January without Simmons and without Fultz. Brown got 28 wins out of a 15 win roster. He's going to get 45 with this 35 win roster.

Those of you into the Sixers may recall we had a poster on KFFL named DBodner who would occasionally drop some really good takes on basketball. Well, our boy is now one of the top Sixers writers in the city. He was let go by Philadelphia Magazine, a huge mistake for them, but he went solo. You can find his stuff here, and he also writes for some other sites. For $3 a month you can help support him being a full-time writer and you get a daily Sixers email.
