I think we are still many (20+) years out on mass produced self driving vehicles. They are coming online now in small numbers, but software/memory/processing glitches will inevitably lead to accidents and deaths which will inevitably lead to lawsuits and reams of regulations.

Think of the goofy shit your laptop or phone does sometimes without prompting and then tell me you're willing to sit back and let Windows 10 do the driving for you.

if the technology becomes reliable enough.....i could totally see people no longer owning their own cars and instead just subscribing to a service that will keep, charge and maintain a fleet of cars at a central location in a population center, and depending on your subscription service level cars would show up to transport you at scheduled times as well as having an on demand service

transportation could be so much quicker if the cars were communicating with each other....rather than stop lights the cars could just time themselves to miss each other

If I still went out drinking and hell raising I'd want one, not now.
I see it coming for long haul trucks on the interstates long before it's practical in city's.

I guess a few of the highest end cars came out with self driving on the highway already...like the MB s65 for $140k.

You're still driving but it'll keep you in the lane and the radar cruise control will speed up and stop with traffic.

No stop lights or stop signs.
No speed limits.
No traffic jams.
No need for auto insurance.
No revenue from traffic tickets.
No more looking for parking spots or parking tickets. Just tell your car to drive around until you get back at a certain time.

Hopefully have it down pat. Just about the time when I have gotten to old, to be behind the wheel

This would make my job pretty awesome. Service or sale call an hour or more away? Nap time!

It almost seems like it would need to be an all or nothing deal, but I think it's closer than people think.

One of the problems the tech companies are going to have is the ethical factor. You can build the tech (chips, cloud storage of the data- which in the data collection phase is over 2 TB an hour) but when you start having to manage the software side of it, that's what can get you in trouble. It will be interesting how those waters get navigated.

It will inevitably come to this, which is a blessing and curse. A blessing for all the reasons OOYM mentioned, but most important, traffic deaths will go down exponentially. The down side is that these post-millennials will never feel the pleasure of having your window down cruising through the city, or going 100 MPH on 95.

Seriously though, I believe that by the year 2060 people will look back at cars as people look at smoking today. Considering MVA are the number one cause of death among teenagers, and high up there for adults, they'll look back at people driving and say "What were they, fucking crazy?"

I got a new car last week and was backing out of the garage....when wham...the car stopped like a hit the wall or something. I got out and looked under the wheels - nothing!

I guess I got too close to the wall and the car stomped the brakes!

I'm a very good driver and I prefer to drive.

All the driver aids they have these days simply make shitty drivers more able. They are still shitty, they just have a safety net.

Instead, they should not be allowed to drive period.

All those sensors emitting shit fuck up my radar detector with "fake news"........ Worse than malls.....

I did most of my hell raising behind the wheel...I still don't want one.

Fortunately, I can shut that off in my Jeep GC.
It happened to me with traffic behind me at 50 mph and nothing in front of me.

Really!?! How do I turn it off? Is it down at the bottom of the dash where I turned off the "eco" feature? I have a 2017 GC.

I wonder if a big bug splattered on the sensor or something? That's really something to consider with autonomous driving. Shit happens.

My son was able to turn off the lane assist feature in the radar that does the automatic throttle response when your on cruise control for his Subaru. He found the directions for that in the owner's manual.

To illustrate how the software still is not ready for this autonomous driving without problems I'll tell you a couple of stories. I went down to Nashua to pick up a big screen TV on Sunday and used my GPS cuz I wasn't exactly sure how to get into the BJ's parking lot off of Route 3. When I got close it told me to take a right which I did and I turned into a dealership parking lot and then it old me to drive 400 feet and my destination would be on the left. If I have done that I would have driven right through the building and into a giant stone retaining wall behind it.

A few months back I took a ride about 75 miles from home to pick up some doors at a custom cabinetry shop and my GPS told me that my destination was 600 feet on the right. Having been there a couple of times before I knew that the shop was on the left so I slowed down at 600 feet when it said I wss at my destination and I was in front of a tiny, decrepit shanty that, believe it or not, someone was living in and my destination was actually about a half a mile up on the left.

Yeah, auto GPS are wrong often. I guess autonomous driving is a joke without very accurate GPS.

Mine...the wife's...is a 2015.
I just googled 2017 JGC dash and it is different...so check the OM.

I really hope they did not remove the ability to shut it off.
