While there was nowhere to go up but up, this team looks improved big time from last year

Already nearly matched last seasons win total. Not sure this a tourney team, but it should be close

I posted this on Wednesday(prior to the game with Southern Illinois) on the CBB Forum:

I just put Minnesota through the RPI forecast, which spits out the percentage of each game based on win/loss probability using Sagarin's predictor. I went through and games where Minnesota was 50% or greater I gave them a win and anything 50% or lower I gave them a loss.
This is what their projected record came too:

21-10(9-9 in B1G), RPI: 34, SOS: 38

I would absolutely sign up for that right now. That would probably get us on the 8-10 line come selection Sunday, based on the RPI and SOS numbers. FWIW, Minnesota was a 56% chance to beat Arkansas last night. They only have one such game lower than that, but still above 50% and that's against Michigan State(52%) at home to open up B1G play, just found that interesting.

I thought last night's game was important if this team wanted a chance at an at-large bid, huge win for the Gophers. A loss last night, and keeping everything the same as far as win/loss probability would have had the Gophers RPI at 47 to finish the year, crazy how just one game can affect a season so much.

It was definitely a good resume win. I'm going to reserve judgement on if this is a potential tourney team or not for a couple more B1G games. It's hard to know when the fatal flaw of the Pitino teams of not closing out good teams down the stretch will jump up and bite us.

Updated resume projection using Sagarin's predictor:

W/L: 23-8(11-7)
RPI: 20
SOS: 19

If this were to play out I think we'd honestly be looking at a 5/6 seed. Outside of the since vacated 1997 team, if this record were to happen it would be the best season for the Gophers since 1990.

Nice win, first time winning back to back road games since 2011-2012. NU has had our number for years, especially in their high school gym

What a great win last night. I posted on the CBB forum at half time that I didn't expect to win based on how things looked. Give credit to the Gophers, they played great defense in the 2nd half. The offense is slowly getting better as well. In the last couple weeks the offense efficiency went from ranking in the 120's to now down to the low 80's.

RPI now sits at 5
SOS now sits at 6
7-2 against the RPI top 100
8-2 against KenPom top 100

Really, really nice resume for the Gophers.

It's where you finish, I know, but I'll take it, first time in rankings in 4 years

Took one on the chin last night. We have to figure a way to beat PSU in Happy Valley. Lose there, than the Wisconsin game at home is must win, and that is anything but a gimme game. We just need to avoid the 3/4 game losing streak that we've been so accustomed to doing. Especially in this watered down version of the B1G.

Psu loss hurts. Can't blow double digit leads

Still believe this is a tourney team, but there well be ups and downs

Yeah. In all honestly we could be 5-1 or 1-5 in league play, so 3-3 is probably the optimal outcome. The Wisconsin game is huge. Can't afford another home loss, even if it is to the presumptive B1G favorite. I think simply going .500 in league play will be enough to make the tournament. 8-10 is where it will start getting sketchy.

Goprhers pick up a huge commit from in state 4 star PF Daniel Oturu for the 2018 class. The 2018 class is really important for this program. I think we'll have 5 available scholarships for that class. Comes at a good time because the state of Minnesota has some really nice prospects for 2018. Although I'm sure Tre Jones will go to fucking Duke like his brother.

Nice win in Double OT

another blown double digit lead though, shouldn't have needed double OT

Iowa got away with a lot of reach in fouls during their 14-0 run
However we got a gift at the end, so

That was a must win game last night. The difference between winning and losing that game is the difference between sitting at 21 in the RPI as opposed to 33 in the RPI had we lost. We should go 5-2 in the last 7, but we also should have beaten MSU at home and PSU on the road(at least). So who knows what the hell is going to happen. There isn't a game down the stretch I'm not worried about, yes even Rutgers.

Gophers have no easy wins, they're just not good enough, but they're good enough to play with any team in the B1G

Agreed, had they won 2 games in that 5 game stretch, they'd be a tourney lock, now, need few wins

Gophers get back to .500 in league play. Any combination of 3-3 in the final 6 should lock us in for the tournament. Hopefully we can steal one in College Park or Madison, that would bump us up a seed line probably. I'd love to stay out of the 8/9 game.

vs. Indiana
vs. Michigan
at Maryland
vs. Penn St.
vs. Nebraska
at Wisconsin

While there is no gimmie games in that bunch, with Indiana and Michigan floundering we need to take advantage of their struggles on our home floor. Losing to Penn St. or Nebraska at home would feel like a bad loss, though it wouldn't count as one. Those road games will be tough, though all bets are off in a rivalry game.

If we go 3-3 or 4-2 without a deep run in the Big Ten Tournament, I think we'll fluctuate somewhere in the 7-10 range depending on what else happens nationally.

Although...with Michigan St. seeming to be down this season and Northwestern unproven as a contender this late in the season, 4-2 might be good enough to get us 4th and a double bye in the conference tournament (though I think 5-1 is more likely to be needed for a chance at that). However, you never want to bet against an Izzo coached team as the calendar turns to March.
