in his induction speech, he admits to using steroids

Is there any fallout?

I would love to be that guy

I don't know if any player has ever come close to being booted out of the H of F, but I would surmise that the people who run the thing can do whatever they want.

This is the alpha and omega of the issue.

There would be "outrage", but ultimately, player A would remain in the hall.

How much outrage would there be if it's someone obviously known to have used, like Bonds or Clemens?

The media would find a way to be outraged.

"He has decided to make a mockery of this day that should be a celebration of all that is good about this great game..."

The guys who are known (or highly suspected) roiders are already identified. If somebody is going to sneak into the H of F now, that would be a trick.

Richard Hidalgo ain't gettin' in, so he can admit to anything he wants.

But what if, perchance, Ken Griffey Jr just decided today to admit to using steroids, that's a different story.

I think the writers would be outraged if they thought somebody had pulled a fast one on them, and they might vote to boot that guy out. Any ideas who that player might be?

There would be fallout ... I believe the truth is that 90+ % of the players were using PEDs. Those players that had great stats had to bat or pitch against players using PEDs. It is far to difficult of a witch hunt and baseball prospered during this time coming off of a very stupid strike that alienated many fans. The Sosa/McGwire home run battle kept the nation's attention. MLB needs to admit it was vicariously libel for PEDs and move on.

It seems likely that as years go by, the H of F will adjust its criteria for inclusion. For the fans, that likely will be more frustrating since what was once a simple matter of talent, or lack thereof, it will eventually be something else -- such as overall contribution to the success of the game. In that respect, the McGwire-Sosa connection is worthy of a corner in Cooperstown.

The H of F will inevitably have to wrestle with the Pete Rose issue.

I also support more managers and broadcasters (media) being inducted.

Personally, I think the Rose issue is open and shut. However, after his death, I think there is room for some interesting discussions. This is not what this thread is about, though, so let's move on.

I think one media member a year is about right. It may actually be TOO many. However, I agree that maybe there needs to be the occasional exception. For example, Kruk and Kuip will likely both get in eventually. But they should go in together, and the current format does not allow for that.

I don't agree that more managers need to get in. I think managers should only get in once in a blue moon. Of current managers, I think Bochy is the only one who already belongs, but Francona and Maddon have very nice resumes that will certainly deserve attention eventually. Basically, though, do we really need more than 2 or 3 per generation?

I did not pursue the Rose debate on purpose. It's a dead horse, IMO ... but now that he is eligible, the conversations can start.

As for broadcasters, I think the greats are being honored. Scully is a lock. Enberg maybe. Others ... maybe they have their own H of F. They tend to get more national exposure now than years gone by.

Managers really need longevity to be considered, I think. A few of them obviously quality. I don't throw out a lot of names on these because it's pretty subjective. Still, I believe the H of F will eventually re-evaluate what exactly is the criteria for membership. It's clear that pitchers are going to be harder to define with the emphasis on the short game. Hitters strike out too much. A .280 average is worth a bunch of money now.

There are likely plenty of guys already in the HOF that used PEDS. It would be interesting to see what happened

He didn't give the story to the gatekeepers first, he just sprung it.

Francona should probably be in.

Sucks that Rajai Davis and Brandon Guyer playing like little leaguers in the OF is the reason he's not considered a slam dunk right now.

There'd be outrage if someone where to do that. Doubt anyone would actually do it though.

How about when Bagwell gets in this year? I think he was a likable enough player, but he almost certainly was on the juice.

Is Bagwell getting in for sure? it would appear so but evidently somebody isn't convinced he was juicing.
