The offense didn't cost Bama that game.

It's all one thing. The inordinate number of 3 and outs are a big part of why the defense was gassed toward the end of the game and didn't do the stellar job that they had done for the first 40 minutes.

Clemson ran 99 plays to Bama's 66. It is certainly possible that the defense would have played better in the last 1/3 of the game if they had not been on the field so much.

Yes and no. Bama offenses are generally designed to control TOP, which did not happen against Clemson. As good as Bama's defense is, they're still human and can get worn down - which happened late in the 3rd quarter of the NCG.

Where the Bama defense has been vulnerable for years is where Clemson exploited it - in the secondary.

True, they were on the field an awful lot. But I'm pretty sure that, with that defense, if someone told Saban or Bama fans that Bama would score 31 points in the NCG, they'd feel pretty good about their chances of winning.

I'm sure fatigue had a bit to do with it, but in the end, Clemson made plays and Bama didn't.

Firing Offensive Coordinator Lane Kiffin a week before the national championship game was maybe the most un-Saban thing that was committed by Nick Saban.

Kiffin who brought you multiple championships with first year starting quarterbacks and got you to the National Championship with a first year Freshman starting quarterback was fired by Nick Saban. Bringing unusual attention and distractions for the Crimson Tide just days before the biggest game of the season.

You now place a guy you hired midseason to take over your offense, who Jalen Hurts didn't even know until this prior week of practice and expect him to deliver a national title winning performance.

What was so odd about this was a usual mastermind of the game, Nick Saban, let his emotions get the best of him and canned Lane Kiffin to send a message, but he sent the message to the wrong people. In doing so, he cost his team a national championship.

This move was just odd from the beginning. Probably should have just kept Kiffin for 1 more week.

I'm not a big CFB fan, what I do watch is mostly SEC football yet I was happy to see Bama lose and it has nothing to do with Bama, but everything to do with Saban.

Saban has the typical Napoleon syndrome and it got the best of him with the Kiffin move imo...if you were going to let the guy interview during this run, you had to assume he might actually get a job. If so, sure he has the balancing act to handle and even if he didn't handle it well Saban could've handle this behind closed doors by keeping Kiffin on staff but letting Sark blend in and handle some of the OC stuff but you keep the play caller in place.

Outright booting the guy from the staff a week before the NC game was arrogant and stupid imo...basically saying we don't need you to handle the biggest game of the year.

Saban did as Saban would do, he removed a cancer from the team. Saban didnt change overnight, he did as he would normally do. What lost us that game was multi-faceted. 1 we could not control the ball because our running game was not strong enough to overcome the defense they faced, especially once we lost Scarborough. 2, with the offense not able to control it running we had to pass and the secondary of Clemson did an oustanding job of controlling our receivers long enough to make pressure force Hurts to throw it away or scramble for what he could get. 3, with our defense gassed from being on the field so much, they simply had nothing left in the tank at the end to control or stop Clemson when it was needed.

The gameplan by Dabo was one of solid planning and he actually used a very Bama like plan, take what the defense will give you and play smash mouth ball for 4 quarters. I am not hanging my head in shame, Dabo and that Clemson team beat us fair and square. Saban made the right choice and lane being there or not didnt change that outcome one bit.

ok, so would the OP suggest then that Sark called a worse game vs Clemson than Kiffin did vs UW?

Any rational observer is going to say no to that. Which means firing Kiffin is not the reason they lost that game. If Kiffin calls it they might have lost by even more.

Saban had to do what he did. Kiffin wasn't fully engaged with the team and their needs 100% and it was having an impact.

How about just giving Clemson come credit and not make the loss about one decision or another on Bama's side. They came in with a great game plan and executed just enough on both sides of the ball to win. One or two plays the other way and Bama wins and no one is bringing up anything about Kiffin/Sark or any other such nonsense.

I hear he has enough money right now and is considering taking the analyst position Sark vacated. this way he gets to still be a part of college football with no pressure, and learn the "process" of winning championships.

Agree. The old saying is, "a good offense is the best defense". Move the yard sticks and keep your defense off the field.

I agree with pretty much all that you said...I for one wasn't suggesting dumping Kiffin was the cause of the loss...but they were very successful with said cancer...I'm a TN guy so I have no love loss for Kiffin what so ever.
