DePaul puts up a major unexpected fight...but Josh Hart

X rolls Providence

Creighton stays too offensively good and fended off SHU

Marquette with first BE opener win since the new BE formed.

Thoughts from Marquette/Gtown Big East Opener

1. Gtown has a lot of really talented athletes. But not a good team game.
2. Pryor is a STUD. If we had him instead of Katin it would be MU up there with Creighton to fight for #2 in conference
3. JTIII must be on life support
4. Refs seemed to realize GT was not close to their usual 22 FTs. The calls got ridiculous
5. Gtown still has great potential with their size and multiple shooters
6. Markus Howard. Stud. Thank god hes so small, need 4 years of him.
7. JJJ animal tonight. He's very streaky but when he's on he's a Josh Hart type of wing(with less natural outside shooting)
8. Best game MU played all year. Actually defended really well.
9. Love having so many offensive weapons. 3 key guys had very off nights and Wilson got hurt. Still won.
10. Game we were supposed to win. Still no room for error. The talent is there, the offense is there. Can they play D and hang with the big body BE players?

Just happy to be 1-0 for a change. Will probably get rolled at SHU they are a very bad matchup for us.

Marquette is a very talented team. They have as much blue chip talent as anybody in the conference, probably more than most. I hope this is the year they put it together.

Next stretch of schedule is brutal. They need to beat Villanova this year. :dhd: They used to beat Villanova all the time.

Yeah the first 8 games is unreal for us. If we go 3-5 it's actually an ok start. Have to win one of the two against SHU(assuming we lose at Nova).

The key will be not slipping up. We beat Gtown because we played better basketball. But with two transfers were only have 9 guys now and Wilson pulled his groin.

Nova/MU had some great battles during MUs 8 years of extremely high level play. This year I think we match up well with Nova. Clearly we are a worse version but if we happen to be hot and Hart and/or Jenkins are cold we could steal one. Creighton is the team among the top 4 I think we have very minimal chance to beat.

Well, DePaul almost beat Villanova too. At Villanova. And I think St. John's is better than DePaul. So yes, Butler had a bad game.

That said, I think Butler has been playing above themselves all year. They beat Cincy but at home, a young Arizona team, and an IU team so inconsistent, a DII team could probably take them out on the right night.

But between Creighton and them, they really killed it in the non-conference.

The new Big East is being built on competitive balance. So I see St. Johns winning as a positive thing.

I think Butler falls closer to mid pack. They are probably 4th best still(maybe Hall beats them out) but not a as good overall as the top 3.

I actually don't think SJU winning games is good. Best thing for the conference to get bids is if DePaul and SJU play dead.

You have a point.

In the long term, you could argue you want St. John's in the mix.

I'll be honest. I haven't thought that highly of Butler even as I was rooting for them to win those NC games. I think they'll be fighting it out with Marquette for 5th/6th place.

Creighton on the other hand looks like the real deal. Excited for tommorow.

Just curious. What are the reasons you guys think Creighton is more legit than Butler? I personally think the latter has a better resume atm.

Just eye test. Creighton is really good. Super efficient on offense. If there D improves they will be scary.

Shoot ungodly from 3. Have a true big man and great guards. Mo Watson jr is great.

I agree. I have seen this same Butler team for a few years. They get the most out of their guys but have a ceiling.

This Creighton team OTOH. I think Watson is as good as Frank Mason. And Foster and Patton could be NBA players. And the surround those guys with a bunch of guys who will knock down open shots.

Which, I don't think they're a team that can win it all or anything, but possibly Final 4 if they put it all together and get a nice draw. The top is very strong this year though.

Butler has a peak of Sweet 16 I'd say.

In all honesty, we probably should have won that game.

Some iffy and uncharacteristic decisions by the seniors down the stretch.

But this team going to lose a few games. No doubt about it.

The Big East and WCC have had similar makeup for a few years now.

What would you think of a Big East-WCC challenge?

Well both conferences are all-private school leagues, and both mostly have Catholic schools

Gonzaga might win their game because they're Gonzaga, but every other WCC team would lose. They may have similar makeup in terms of off the court but there isn't anything remotely close about the on-court product.
