It's that time everyone!

Time for me to post my predictions for this year.

Some may catch folks by surprise, some teams may win an upset against a team you wouldn't think they would, and then later in the year lose to someone surprising, but those things happen every year so I make my best attempt to guess them.

It's impossible to get everything right but I actually did a solid job last year, my best predictions were Northwestern and Washington State having a better than expected year.

I did miss on some too, namely Missouri who I can never seem to predict correctly, a few years ago I had complete doom and gloom for them and they won the SEC East, then I was worried about what they lost the following year and had doom and gloom again and once again they won the SEC East, last year I had them winning the SEC East and they plummeted to 5-7 :L

This year I'm changing it up, doing it by conferences in reverse alphabetical order, so you SEC & Pac folks won't have to wait to the end this year, sorry ACC peeps, you'll have to wait.

With that being said let's get this thing started!!

Appalachian State Mountaineers

When did they get this logo? Is this a thing, it showed up when I googled their logos. Appalachian State's transformation to FBS has been nothing short of remarkable, after stumbling to one of their worst seasons in 2013, which was also their last in FCS, Appalachian State then started 1-5 in 2014. In the year and a half of football since, Appalachian State has won 17 out of 19 games, that is absolutely incredible. Last season was a fantastic one for Appalachian State, they were especially good early on starting out the season 6-1 with an excusable blowout loss to Clemson and blew out everyone else, including Georgia Southern who was projected to be their biggest rival in winning the Sun Belt. Appalachian State then dropped off, needing 3 overtimes to defeat Troy and then getting housed by a surging Arkansas State team, both games were at home. They won out but still weren't as dominant as they were early on. Certainly an 11-2 record in their 2nd full FBS season was nothing to sneeze at, and Appalachian State is looking to win the conference this year. Appalachian State had an efficient offense last year, they had 3 big running backs and a big QB in Taylor Lamb who had a good completion percentage and threw 31 Touchdowns and only 9 picks. None of Appalachian State's 3 RBs were seniors last year, in fact the only one that's a senior this year is Marcus Cox, who ran for nearly 1500 yards last year despite the shared carries, a promising freshman in Marcus Williams Jr joins the group as well. While the backfield of Appalachian State is strong their offense has huge questions elsewhere, the only one of their top 4 receivers that returns is a talented but injury prone Shaedon Meadors, they also return a solid target in tight end Barrett Burns. Appalachian State has some young talented but inexperienced players at receiver who hopefully will emerge for Appalachian State. The offensive line is another concern, two all-conference linemen are gone, but at least there are 4 linemen with starting experience back, they need to be efficient for Appalachian State to have success. Appalachian State's defense dropped off late last year but they do bring back a lot of starters, the defensive line will miss it's leader Ronald Blair who is gone but everyone else is back. Appalachian State's linebackers are a special group and are one of the best in the nation, they play aggressively and like to rush the QB. Appalachian State's secondary took a major hit last week as it's leader Latrell Gibbs, who had 7 picks last year, was ruled academically ineligible for the 2016 season. Safety Doug Middleton is also gone, but Alex Gray is a solid safety and now top corner Tae Hayes played well as a freshman last year. The schedule is a little more difficult than last year's they open the season at Tennessee, and have an odd home game against Miami(Fl), they also play Old Dominion and Akron OOC. In conference play Appalachian State avoids Arkansas State which is a benefit, but road games against Louisiana-Lafayette and Georgia Southern could prove to be roadblocks on their mission to win the Sun Belt.

Predictions:

Sept. 1 @ Tennessee: Wouldn't it be something if Appalachian State pulled this upset off? A rare Thursday night opener for Tennessee, likely so they'll have extra time to prepare for the Battle at Bristol in week 2. Appalachian State could prove feisty for a few quarters but don't have the talent to win this one. L

Sept. 10 Old Dominion: Old Dominion's run defense was awful last year and unless they make a full 360 Appalachian State should be able to run all over them for an easy win. W

Sept. 17 Miami(Fl): A very odd home game for Appalachian State but it does provide an excellent opportunity for them, I think their pass rush gets to Brad Kaaya early, and they run with some success in the 1st half. In the second half Miami forces Appalachian State to pass more, Appalachian State holds the lead through midway in the 3rd quarter but their defense tires out and the secondary gives up easier passes late in the game which leads to a close loss. L

Sept. 24 @ Akron: Appalachian State struggles against Akron's defense for a lot of this game, but thanks to Akron's inept offense Appalachian State still takes the win: W

Oct. 1 Georgia State: Appalachian State dominated Georgia State last year but it was prior to Georgia State's surge, Appalachian State still overloads Georgia State for a win in this one. W

Oct. 12 @ Louisiana-Lafayette: I think Louisiana-Lafayette will return to contending for the Sun belt this year, and it starts here as the Ragin Cajuns stun Appalachian State. L

Oct. 22 Idaho: Appalachian State's offense has no trouble in this one, Idaho's offense does well for a while as well to keep in interesting before Appalachian State pulls away. W

Oct. 27 @ Georgia Southern: This is a short week for both teams, Appalachian State's defense proves to be too good against the run and they take down Georgia Southern. W

Nov. 5 Texas State: Texas State will be hitting the reset button this year, Appalachian State wins easily. W

Nov. 12 @ Troy: Appalachian State struggles for a half but takes down Troy in this one. W

Nov. 19 UL-Monroe: Easy win here as UL-Monroe will also be hitting the reset button. W

Nov. 26 @ New Mexico State: Appalachian State gives Larry Rose III fits in this one and beats New Mexico State. W

Predicted Record: 9-3(7-1)

LOL! It really depends on how many known commodities a team has, a lot of space was taken up talking about players that are back. Most tend to be around the same length though.

Arkansas State Red Wolves

OWGONTBEOIPDJJE.20100824202553.jpg

Preview: Well how about this? After years of instability for Arkansas State, Blake Anderson is entering his 3rd year with Arkansas State. Finally having some stability paid off for Arkansas State as they rolled through the Sun Belt last year. The year didn't start off too well, Arkansas State started 1-3 with blowout losses to good USC and Toledo teams, as well as a 27-20 loss to Missouri, which at the time didn't look too bad but in hindsight the 27 points Arkansas State gave up to them was the highest total Missouri scored against a FBS team last year. Arkansas State then entered conference play and went on an 8 game winning streak, while seemingly getting better with each performance. Those 8 wins were all in Sun Belt play and Arkansas State won the Sun Belt title, their bowl game didn't go to well as they were blown out by Louisiana Tech but they finished with a 9-4 record. It seemed like if Arkansas State had better athletes than their opponent they won. and if they didn't well in most cases they were blown out. Arkansas State plays a very fast tempo on offense, it was mostly run based but with a new offensive coordinator and the graduation of QB Fredi Knighten who was a great runner but limited as a passer, Arkansas State may pass more this year. Arkansas State will have some help in transfer QB Justice Hansen who once was an Oklahoma commit, he likely will take the starting job as the other candidates are not as impressive. There's changes galore at the rest of the skill positions, gone is RB Michael Gordon, but Warren Ward & Johnston White were productive last year as well they combined to rush for over 1300 yards. It's a complete reshuffling at receiver as Arkansas State loses 3 of their top 4 receivers, but returnee Dijon Pascal was one of the primary receivers in this offense the last two years and he could be primed for a big year, there's a ton of potential with some of the new receivers, Arkansas State brought in Kendall Sanders a talented transfer from Texas and electric kick returner Cameron Echols-Luper from TCU. This offense will have a lot of speed, and a steady offensive line returning as well, every major contributor for the line is back this year, and it's stats should be better as a lot of sacks they gave up last year were because of Knighten running around too much to try to make a play. Arkansas State's defense brings a lot back also, they bring back 5 of their front 6, and the open spot will be filled by the appropriately named Dee Liner, a transfer defensive end from Alabama. The 2-deep overall is mostly back so this front 6 for Arkansas State has a lot of depth and speed. The secondary was questionable at times last year and Arkansas State loses some corners but they are very well off at safety as everyone who saw a lot of time last year is back. The schedule isn't easy, Arkansas State opens with Toledo, who seemingly has been an arch nemesis of theirs under Anderson, they also play Auburn and Utah State on the road and they play Central Arkansas from FCS. They avoid Appalachian State in conference play this year, but get Georgia Southern. Arkansas State is the favorite to win the Sun Belt, they simply might be too athletic for anyone else in the conference to beat them.

Predictions:

Sept. 3 Toledo: Arkansas State will get to take advantage of Toledo's retooled defense to make this a shootout but Toledo wears them down with their running game and Arkansas State loses a shootout. L

Sept. 10 @ Auburn: Arkansas State's offense allows them to stay in this one for a half before fading. L

Sept. 17 @ Utah State: Once again Arkansas State gets caught in a shootout, and once again they come up short as Utah State's defense stops them late. L

Sept. 24 Central Arkansas: Central Arkansas is one of the better FCS teams and they relish at the chance to try to take down an in-state rival, Central Arkansas hangs in there but Arkansas State overwhelms them in the 2nd half. W

Oct. 5 Georgia Southern: Georgia Southern's option offense is one that Arkansas State is not used to facing and that proves to be a challenge, but Arkansas State's offense also proves to be difficult to stop for Georgia Southern, this game will be a wild shootout, it's a Tuesday night game so this will be a fun one to watch. Arkansas State wins the shootout. W

Oct. 15 South Alabama: Arkansas State is just too talented they win this one with ease. W

Oct. 29: UL-Monroe: Arkansas State gets a bye week to prepare for a rebuilding UL-Monroe, can't imagine this going well for UL-Monroe. W

Nov. 3 @ Georgia State: Georgia State's defense actually gives Arkansas State some fits before Arkansas State pulls away in the 4th quarter. W

Nov. 12 New Mexico State: Once again Arkansas State has too much talent, they roll past New Mexico State. W

Nov. 17 @ Troy: Arkansas State struggles with Troy for most of the game, but they make the plays late to win. W

Nov. 26 @ Louisiana-Lafayette: I've gone back and forth on this one, going on the road against the Ragin Cajuns is a tough task, but in the end I feel like Arkansas State may just have too much speed for them. W

Dec. 3 @ Texas State: Texas State is starting over this year, this will be a blowout win for Arkansas State. W

Predicted Record: 9-3(8-0)

Georgia Southern Eagles

Georgia_Southern.jpg

Preview: Georgia Southern is another team that has made moving up to FBS look easy as they have instantly become one of the better group of 5 programs out there. Georgia Southern identifies as an option team, and previous head coach Willie Fritz took it and ran it well, now Tyson Summers who was previously a defensive coordinator at Colorado State and UCF before that enters as the new head coach. It will be interesting to see what he does, as a defensive guy he isn't set on an offense, the co-offensive coordinators that Summers hired, were Rance Gillespie and David Dean, neither are option coaches and run offenses that pass the ball more than Georgia Southern is usually comfortable with. Last year Georgia Southern was victim of opening against West Virginia, who's defensive coordinator did not hide how much time he spent preparing for the option, Georgia Southern was shutout and blown out in that one, they rebounded quickly destroying a good Western Michigan team, and blowing out the 4 following opponents as well, then disappointment, they were dominated on national television by Appalachian State in a big game for the sun belt conference, they did rebound to blow out the next two opponents before a game against Georgia, Georgia Southern put up a gritty effort, thanks to recovering two Georgia fumbles when Georgia was in scoring range, Georgia Southern managed to bring the game to overtime where they fell just short. Georgia Southern destroyed South Alabama and then ended the regular season in the most bitterly disappointing fashion as they laid a monster of an egg in a 34-7 destruction at the hands of in-state rival Georgia State, allowing Georgia State to go to a bowl. Georgia Southern did end the season on a high note as they took advantage of Bowling Green's inability to stop runs to the outside in a 58-27 destruction in the GoDaddy bowl, a 9-4 season was good, but already was lower than what Georgia Southern was hoping for. Georgia Southern had the best rushing offense in college football last year and they return every single player who carried the ball last year, Matt Brieda was the primary back and despite the split carries he ran for over 1600 yards last year, QBs Kevin Ellison and Favian Upshaw split time and they run effectively, the amazing thing about this team is 5 of the 6 players who carried the ball 20 times or more last year averaged 6.8 or more yards/carry, that is just absurd! On top of that, the offensive line actually wasn't even rated that strongly, that's just how explosive this option was. Here's where the concerns come in Summers wants to pass the ball more this year, and Georgia Southern was very ineffective passing the ball, Kevin Ellison threw 4 TDs to 5 picks, and Upshaw never even threw a touchdown last year while also throwing 5 picks. They barely completed 40% of their passes. Georgia Southern was actually more effective running on 3rd and long than passing. Georgia Southern loses some receivers but the leading receiver BJ Johnson, who does return only caught 15 passes last year. There's some talented freshmen receivers coming in who could help. Georgia Southern had an underrated defense last year, and it returns the entire defensive line from last years team, including the reserves. The only player gone from the linebackers is Antwione Williams who was one of the best players on Georgia Southern, but the perfectly named Ironhead Gallon will take over as the leader in the linebackers. Unfortunately Georgia Southern has one major concern in the secondary, the secondary was a huge key to Georgia Southern's defense last year and now almost everyone is gone, there are some young talented players who have no experience, you have to figure it will regress this year. Georgia Southern has a tricky schedule, with non-conference road games against Western Michigan, Georgia Tech and Ole Miss, they also draw Appalachian State, Arkansas State and Louisiana-Lafayette in conference play.

Predictions:

Sept. 3 Savannah State: Of the choices of FCS teams Savannah State is the worst FCS team out there, will Georgia Southern be able to hold back from scoring 80 points is the question. W

Sept. 10 @ South Alabama: Georgia Southern will roll past South Alabama in this one with ease. W

Sept. 17 UL-Monroe: Another rebuilding opponent and another blowout win for Georgia Southern. W

Sept. 24 @ Western Michigan: This will be a big game on the group of 5 level, Western Michigan passes the ball effectively against Georgia Southern's secondary, Georgia Southern has better than expected success passing the ball in the first 3 games, causing them to try passing it too much here and they fall behind causing a loss. L

Oct. 5 @ Arkansas State: This game will be a back and forth shootout and I have Arkansas State just barely winning. L

Oct. 15 @ Georgia Tech: Georgia Southern gets a little more time to prepare for this one, and they give Georgia Tech a fight for all 4 quarters but fall just short. L

Oct. 22 @ New Mexico State: Georgia Southern's offense proves unstoppable in this one and they win. W

Oct. 27 Appalachian State: Appalachian State comes well prepared for the option in this game and Georgia Southern ends up falling short. L

Nov. 5 @ Ole Miss: Seriously what a rough stretch this is, Georgia Southern loses this one as well as they don't have an answer for Chad Kelly. L

Nov. 12 Louisiana-Lafayette: This is yet another tough game but Louisiana-Lafayette doesn't have a passing offense capable of taking advantage of Georgia Southern's secondary allowing Georgia Southern to win. W

Nov. 19 @ Georgia State: Georgia Southern is beaten and battered at this point but it doesn't distract them from enacting revenge on their rival as they win this one. W

Dec. 3 Troy: Georgia Southern's offense will be too much for Troy to keep up with in this one and Georgia Southern rolls. W

Predicted Record: 7-5(6-2)

wow, Ark St got Kendall Sanders and Echols-Luper?

Sanders of course was involved in that sexual assault case on campus at Texas, right before the coaching change. The University immediately suspended him...they had the trial and he was found not guilty. But there was no way he was going to come back to the Texas squad. I guess good for him he found a place to continue school/playing. Better just mind his Ps and Qs when it comes to dating. As for his play, he had not really done anything yet, but the year coming before his suspension was where he was expected to up his level of play.

Georgia Southern's coach took off for Tulane of all places last year. This may have been a reason why:

Ga. Southern sanctioned for academic violations

Doesn't seem like it's going to be too big a deal in the long-run unless more violations turn up.
