I have an HD Antenna in my spare bedroom. $10-15 at Wal-Mart, Lowes, etc. It plugs right in the back of the TV where the cable plug is. In the city, I get 40 channels with local HD NBC and Fox. Some old time shows like Miami Vice, Quantum Leap, Fantasy Island.. lol. PBS and a few other channels with decent movies. But it gets me the main channels for football. Not that I can watch my Rams in Dallas, TX anyway.

I'm thinking about going off the grid and cancelling my cable service. Just tired of the bullshit and them jacking up rates. Just use the antenna for local and other channels, keep internet, and go with Netflix.

I was looking at maybe doing the Sling TV that has ESPN, ESPN2, HGTV, TNT, TBS, AMC, etc but the reviews are not all that. Seems like they are new to streaming, but this is definitely the future.

Anyone know of any other ways to screw the cable companies and keep some money in our pockets??

I've had enough!

I have a place in Florida that I'm only at a few weeks of the year. I'm going to try that next time I'm down there. I had a low end cable deal ($19.95 a month $24.60 with the fees) but it's over now and they jacked it up to $49 a month. One TV, no internet and no pay channels. But I get ESPN and AMC (Need the walking dead).

I'm not going down there until March so if you pull this off let me know how it turns out

Like AntennaWeb.org

This will show you where the towers are down there. If you are close to a city, you don't need anything special antenna wise.. But if you are in the boonies, you will need an amplified antenna. Both are not expensive.

Where at in FL? I lived in New Smyrna Beach from 2004-2010 and Orlando from 1998-2002

I cut cable almost 2 years ago after I bought Google ChromeCast... Started streaming everything from my laptop. Sports, movies, anything on tv, you name it. All the sites are very illegal, but its not as if I'm the one uploading the streams which is by far & away more illegal than simply viewing it. I've been saving THOUSANDS!!! Biggest drawback is you give up quality most of the time. If you're lucky you can find higher quality streaming speeds which are almost HD-like. Also, you enter the horrid ad/spyware/malware territory. If you don't have the right PC protection, then I would highly advise against it. With the right protection you can get pretty skilled at navigating these sites. Kind of frustrating at times, but I'll take it over seeing a $150-200 monthly bill.

I also have Netflix, which is mainly for the wife. Also, one other drawback is with heavy streaming comes increased data usage. I've peaked over my data limit multiple times and my internet provider has threatened to up my rates each time. lol

My fiances dad has this elaborate antenna system set up where he can pretty much get every channel (basically online) and he doesn't pay a single penny for "cable"

Netflix has gone downhill imo and you really can't find anything good (some of their series are ok) but the movies suck. Hulu is pretty sweet except you can't get any CBS shows since they don't have a contract with them so that blows.

A few months ago I learned you don't even need a digital antenna. If you're close enough to the signal towers you can simply point one end of a coaxial cable (with the other plugged into a TV) outside and get the same free channels.

I went away from Direct TV a couple years ago. Been living off of just Netflix and amazon prime (already have for the shipping).

The ONLY thing I miss at all about it is sports. I got the NFL replay package, and on Sunday will watch a game over at a buddies or the bar, then Monday I am off and am up to date on the season (haven't missed a snap of 2015 yet).

NBA is a bit tougher. I use TNT for their odd angle free game (uses the non standard broadcast angles), and once in a while buy a game from NBA League pass or go out to watch one.

I tried sling TV, but it was baseball season and I didn't really get much out of it.

And yes, I have a less than reputable source for streaming movies/shows as well.

Ok I am fucking the cable company!

Cut my cable TV, kept my internet with Time Warner - getting 50 Mbps for $44.99/month for 1 year. Using my own router and modem. Bought the new Roku 2 (similar to Roku 3, but with no voice activation). Added Netflix and Sling TV. All of this plus my antenna (30 channels) where I get ALL major networks and then some others.

:suds:

I must say it's been pretty dam solid. Plenty of shit to watch. The Sling TV is $20/month and has ESPN, ESPN 2, TNT, TBS, History, H2, TMC, HGTV, Travel, etc (20 channels total).

Negatives so far have been sometimes the streaming isn't great at times - but it's only around primetime 5-7pm or so (happened 1-2 times in the last 2 weeks).

I have so much TV I am even thinking about cancelling Netflix. I can add HBO on the Roku as well.

Plus the Roku2 or Sling TV has a CBS app that I will add for March Madness and then cancel - $5/month. But with the antenna and Sling TV I get CBS and TBS so I should get a lot of the games actually.

Fuck you cable TV. I am paying $75/month now and if I can cancel Netflix i'll be at $66.86/month for plenty of TV.

As pissed as I am about the rising cost of my bundle with Cox, $184 after the latest increase, I can't justify cutting the cord. By cutting cable, I would save only about $60 from my entertainment bundle.

But it would cost me a month:
$20 - Sling
$8 - Amazon Prime
$8 - Netflix
$8 - Hulu
$8 - UFC fight pass

Plus the cost of of investment of an HD antenna to get local stations.

So all in all, I would save $8. But I would lose fox sports AZ, which shows all my local sports teams. And currently, you can't purchase the channel separately to stream. And I might have to increase my internet package to compensate for all the extra bandwidth all the streaming

I think FSAZ is worth a $8 month.

Thinking about something like this. My issue is that I have 4 tvs and none are "smart". I guess I need to buy 4 smart tvs and 4 antenna

I have 5 TVs in my house, only 1 of them is a smart TV. But 3 of the 4 TVs all are hooked up to blu-ray players with Opera TV that have all the apps.

As long as you have TVs with HDMI inputs, a simple stick device is only like $35 a tv.

If you bought a fire stick or box ..i don't think you need a smart TV for that. You just need a empty hdmi port.

Hulu is pointless 3 or 4 months out of the year. They add no content worth watching over the summer.

I dumped DirecTV in December. Was going to get an antenna. Missed TV for 2 days. Haven't missed it since. Probably won't even bother to get the antenna. Savings - All of it.

Hulu fits perfectly in my schedule. I like to watch new shows when they are released & summer time is usually when I work the most, 50-60 hours a week in 110 degree weather. Other than take a lot of showers & sleep, I don't do much during those months.

Dam son!! You must watch a shitload of TV. NetFlix and Amazon Prime? I have so many movies between the antenna, Sling TV, Roku 2 free apps and Netflix.. I think after college bball I'm cutting Sling TV for the summer. We tend to be out of the house more in the spring/summer anyway and I could really care less about baseball until September. Plus I get FOX on the antenna for baseball. I watched Pebble Beach golf tourney on the antenna last weekend -- clear as can be.

I would like to have Fox sports - that's the one thing I would like in addition to ESPN, ESPN2. Come this fall, I'm going to get creative because last year I had the sports package and got every college football on the planet. Did I watch 20% of them?? NO

Also take into account I have a 3 month old daughter so TV time has definitely been cut.

With no Sling TV, my bill would be per month:

50 Mbps Internet (TWC): $49
Netflix: $8
