What did this add accomplish?
If it was so powerful (and they thought people would care), why just run it locally?
I don't know the answer, but has Nike ever ran an add to just a local market?
Seems to me like it's just a case of being up LeBron's Ass.
I'm not going to pretend to know all the answers either... but marketing teams are constantly coming up with audience-specific ads and promotions... I'm sure Nike is the same way.
The ad is just getting attention from sports writers making "articles" out of it.
To me, the point of the add is bolster brand loyalty among Cleveland/LeBron fans by reminding them of the common "don't give up, work hard, achieve your dreams" mentality (an adored sentiment in the mid-west).
When scrutinized... few ads ever appear to be effective (in terms of getting Joe Smith to buy something).... but most work much better than you'd think.
