I love Star Trek.
Watched the original series every week.
TNG
DS9
Voyager
all really good
Enterprise wasn't all that great, but had it's moments.

They can do either of those concepts that are talked about and either will be successful if, IF, the stories and the writing come together. There are so many possibilities that's it's wide open.

Hope they do something though. Good SciFi is hard to come by.

I would prefer that they don't try to do a Kirk/Spock/McCoy thing because it will always be compared to the original cast. Open it up and create new characters, but knowing Hollywood, they won't be going out on a limb, so probably will be conservative in concept and will be disappointing in the end.

Would love to see a good Trek show back on TV. It's all about who has power over the production, and if they hire good writers, will producers/CBS try to make it stupid to appeal to everybody.

I notice that the pitch you're talking about with rebooting was written in 2004, before Abrams did his reboot with his film.

They're still making the films from the reboot, so I highly doubt a new Trek show with that pitch would be a great option. The next movie is going to be set right before TOS started.

Anyhoo.

My ranking for the shows so far:

1) TNG
2) DS9
3) TOS
4) VOYAGER
5) ENTERPRISE

Both TNG and DS9 took a couple of seasons to find their footing, but when they did, they were some of the best TV I've ever seen. The whole Dominion arc that started in DS9 really elevated the show to something special, IMO.

TOS was the original, and a treasure. I just don't care all that much for the tone of it. Not my thing. I like more of the Ronald D. Moore type tone that he started with TNG, and then really got to explore with BSG.

Voyager only got good when Seven came on board, and no, I don't just mean the T and A. The stories were better.

Enterprise was awful. I know that people say the final couple of seasons were good, but the first season was so atrocious, I'm just not willing to try it.

I'm pretty much in line with what you have said. My rankings would be a little different.
DS9 did get really good with the Dominion angle, but it got way better when Worf was written into it too.
Voyager had some good moments, but I got tired of Janeway getting her ass kicked all the time, and Seven of Hooters was easy on the eyes.

Perhaps it's because I'm just a pessimistic person anyway, but I'm leery of the potential new series. Part of it is because I don't really like Kirk all that much. I loved the series but thought that character was a smarmy jackass. That being said, I do love the reboot movies.

I watched TNG as a kid and loved it. In fact, we're re-watching the whole series at the moment and just finished season 2. I never really got into the others but am willing to try them out when we're done.

I would be excited if it were going to be on SiFi, AMC or CW. Maybe even USA. But regular network tv? No way.

Mostly I was just pissed that TNG went away. Another part of it was they were showing during a time of my life where I was trying to deny my nerd side. I have now embraced the truth and will watch them with an open(er) mind.

Well, DS9 seemed like a galactic bus station for the first season or two. Commander Sisko took some getting used to.

Voyager took a while to find it's footing.
Neither was able to just jump up and get going from the get/go i thought.

I was the same as you. Started watching TNG when I was 10 or 11. It was the first non-cartoon that I ever got hooked on. It was great growing up with it. The final episode of the show was when I was a senior in high school.

Anyway, I highly recommend DS9. I never got into it when it first came out. It wasn't until 2004 that I went back to it, and boy, am I glad I did. The first couple of seasons are awkward, but it gets better in season 3, and then really good in season 4 and beyond.

I always felt like the Original and TNG got cut short and had plenty left in them.
I felt different about DS9 and Voyager, I thought they had run their course and was time to end them.

Enterprise???? There might have been a handfull of episodes that I can even remember.

I agree with all of this.

Voyager ended very abruptly to me, but at the same time, the stories were growing stale. If I had watched it during its original run, I wouldn't have kept watching past season 7.

DS9 was complete, and had a very satisfying end to all of the character and story arcs.

Not liking the idea of a reboot of the original.

Bring something new to the table.

The new Battlestar Galatica was fabulous and they ended it well. Scifi has stated that they aren't willing to commit the $$$ to another series like that so they're out. They're too concerned making money with cheap reality tv show garbage and those low budget disaster flicks they keep rolling out with c-list actors.

Only a major network will be involved to launch a project like this.

The popularity and hype around the Star Trek: Renegades project may be part of what's driving this, although for the networks, it's all about the $$$. The Enterprise series didn't go so well. I'd love for a new series to come, but I have a feeling it won't be anytime soon.

So slight threadjack...

Like I said, we're watching TNG right now. A question that keeps popping up in my mind is what are the transport rooms really for? I mean they can lock onto someone thousands of miles away and then beam them to anywhere else on the ship (like directly to the bridge). It stands to reason that they can do it in reverse. So...what's the point of the transport rooms really?

They only did that direct transporting in special cases. I would assume there is higher risk and higher energy cost fir those vs using a transporter pad. Typically, when interacting with other Fed ships, didn't they been from transporter room to transporter room? I would assume that is the ideal situation (safest and cheapest).

I'll buy that to a certain extent. The safety thing I might question a little since they would beam sick and/or severely wounded directly to the sick bay. I feel like safety in that situation would require the medical team to come to the transport room instead. And yes, I know I am way overthinking this. It's just one of those random things that keeps nibbling the back of my mind.

ETA: Lol, I should have Googled. Yes, energy and safety. technology - In Star Trek - What's the Point of the Transporter Room? - Science Fiction & Fantasy Stack Exchange

honestly, it's just one of those things you have to go with.

even if we had an way to convert every atom of a person's body to energy, and a remote drive big enough to store all of those atoms for a split second before converting them back into matter at a new location, we'd still have a pretty big problem with the heisenberg uncertainty principle. love how the trek tech guys just came up with the "heisenberg compensator" as a part of the transporter to deal with that little issue. :)

i was just summarizing what a bunch of physicists were saying about various trek/scifi gizmos on an episode of "the universe".

"the universe" is great documentary for laymen like me who are into astronomy. they put it in terms that i can actually understand.
