The one thing that Bo couldn't do these past 7 years...........compete against top 10 teams.

Take a look at how Mike Riley favored in the past decade against fellow top 10 opponents. Keep in mind, this is being done at Oregon State.

#1 USC Lost by 1 score - 2004
@ #3 LSU Lost by 1 point in overtime - 2004
#2 USC Won - 2006
@ #2 Cal Won - 2007
#1 USC Won - 2008
#4 USC Lost by 1 score - 2009
#7 Oregon Lost by 1 score - 2009
@ #9 Arizona Won - 2010
#8 Stanford Lost by 1 score - 2013
#7 Arizona State Won - 2014

That is what's called COMPETING.....

You don't get blown out by a team just because they're scary and ranked high.

You compete. You play to win, no matter what. That's what we're getting.

He'll have better talent at Nebraska and he did a pretty good job recruiting at Oregon State. The guy's a better coach than some of y'all give him credit for.

If ya'll want me to post Nebraska's results against top 10 teams since the Tom Osborne days I'd be glad to.

But I don't think it's necessary, if you know what I mean.

This would be a treat, just to compete instead of knowing an ass whipping is about to unfold before your very eyes, and there's nothing that can change, before or after ass whipping, that would prevent it in the future

WTF Cal was ranked #2 one time?

Amazing, isn't it?

There are actually shitty programs out there who are winning big games.

i do agree with this. as much as i felt disappointed with this hire, theres no doubt the guy has been "competitive" against top talent which was our top complaint against BOP

Beating top ten teams and competing with them is good, but will we have a chance to compete for conference championships, and national championships too at least once every 3 or 4 years, without any losing seasons? This is what us Nebraska fans want, don't we? I can live with a rare 7 or 8 win season with most seasons being good {9 wins} to extraordinary, {10 wins or better}. We had good overall with Bo, but will we see better with Riley? Some of you will see my point here, but i assume a couple of posters will cut down what I say here, even though they have said the same thing pretty much.

He did it at OREGON STATE.

I'm not trying to argue that he turned them in world beaters. I'm just telling you that Oregon State, one of the worst programs in the country pre-2000 era, somehow beat these teams.

In my wildest dreams I could never imagine Nebraska beating a #1 or #2 ranked team in the last 10 years.

Storm clouds in your Unicorns and Rainbows feelings.

I will concede that Riley had some big wins. Will you concede that Riley had some really bad losses?

I want the coach that wins the easy wins and can win some big wins. Preferably all of the big ones in a season, but at this point I will take some big wins. Just don't lose the easy ones.

We all know Bo could win the easy wins. Can Riley?

Blowout loss is a loss of 21 or more

Losing seasons in 2010, 2011, and 2014

2014 season 5-7
Lost to California(5-7)
Lost to Washington State (3-9)
Blowout losses to USC, Stanford, Washington, Oregon

2013 season 7-6
lost to Eastern Washington of the FCS
blowout losses to Washington

2012 season 9-4
A good year, beat Wisconsin, lost to Texas in the bowl game
blowout loss to Oregon

2011 season 3-9
lost to Sacramento State of the FCS
Blowout losses WIsconsin, Stanford, Oregon

2010 season 5-7
blowout loss to Stanford

What does that give us?

A coach that finished 29-33 over the last five years

A coach that is guaranteed to have one blowout loss each year, averages two blowouts per year

A coach that is guaranteed to lose at least four games each year

2 losses to the FCS

Two or more losses to teams with a losing record. You have to assume that when you go 3-9 and 5-7 those seasons had losses to teams with losing records. I will look those up when I have time.

I have no idea why facilities mean so much.

Texas has great facilities and access to a rich talent base, look what they are doing.

Florida has great facilities and access to a rich talent base, look what they are doing.

Michigan has great facilities, look what they are doing.

Kansas State has crap facilities but they have Bill Snyder.
North Dakota State has crap facilities and even worse weather, look what they did.
Wisconsin Whitewater has crap facilities and bad weather, look what they did.
Duke is a basketball school, probably does not have great facilities for the football team. Look what they are doing.
Memphis, good god, have you ever been to Memphis? Armpit of Tennessee.

Colorado State, Northern Illinois, Marshall, blah blah blah.

The answer is coaching.

There is nothing in Riley's resume that tells me he is a winner. But he is a nice guy.

Jiminy Christmas!!

Imagine Nebraska losing to an FCS team? Won't happen now, but now Nebraska could lose to Purdue, Southern Mississippi, Kent State, Colorado, Georgia State.

It's a double edged sword.

He did get a few upsets.

In some of the games JJM posted against Top 10 teams, those teams didn't finish ranked, so they were likely over-rated to begin with.

It really boils down to who he hires as assistants. He'll have the money to hire a good staff if he so chooses.
Everything else is in place for success at Nebraska.

What do you expect from a program with FCS level resources?

That program was only winning 1-2 games a year before the year 2000.

When you lose to Oregon State it tends to knock you down a few rungs.

I agree with the assistants though. I am not saying this is a guaranteed great hire. I think he will be but we got to give the guy a chance.

I personally think he is way better then Bo and yes partly because of his personality. If a guy says that he needs smart people surrounding him to help guide him then we are already years ahead of anything Pelini would of done.

LOL

They weren't knocked out of the polls for ONLY losing to Oregon St. They'd lost other games.

I will agree that with the exception of a few people, no matter who anyone hires as a head coach there is a gamble involved.

2012 Lost to 7-6 Washington

2011
started off 0-4
Lost to 6-8 UCLA
lost to 6-7 Arizona State
lost to 7-6 California

2010
lost to 7-6 Washington
lost to 4-8 UCLA
lost to 2-10 Washington State

That makes nine losses to teams that finished 7-5 or worse in the last five years, and two losses to FCS schools. That is eleven losses against teams that a Bo Pelini coached team would have won 95% of the time.

Judging from how his teams start the season, the first game is almost always a loss.

So that settles it......

Nebraska will now lose all of these games too, because Nebraska and Oregon State are on the same level in terms of resources.

We have nothing more to offer to help Riley than Oregon State did.

It is official. We will become Oregon State. This sucks!!!!
