Chapman was struck in the face by a line drive off the bat of Salvador Perez in the game this evening. He was taken off in a cart-and the game was suspended. No word on his condition, but it was reported although it was a viscious blow, he didn't loose consciousness. Jocketty and Chapmans father both went to the mound to speak to him before he was removed. Perez wept.

Hopefully, he will be fine. Puts it all in perspective.

Obviously a concussion so he will miss a minimum of week.

Broken bones in the cheek. I'd say 15 days would be optimistic.

You might be right. And how is this going to mess with his head?

This kid is such a talent. I wish him a quick recovery. Baseball is better with him. I hope he can come back as a human first and a pitcher second. Get well Aroldis!

Facial fractures. They won't know for a while. Casey broke orbital bone early in his career from a beaning, and came back a year later. There have been others that had adversely affected vision, that weren't so lucky. You can die from a blow like that.

Suppose to have a team meeting at 11:15 our time, so we will have more news on Chappy then.

So sad. Hopefully Chapman is okay. Baseball comes 2nd in a situation like this. Hopefully we are just dealing with a couple fractures on face.

I see the Pigsburg fans are showing classy by saying it was karma for the "three or four times" Chapman hit McCutchen. I think he hit him once, but don't let the details smog your minds, Parrot pussies.

Yes I have been hearing all of the Pirates sick fans all over twitter. Don't see how anybody can wish or want anything like this on any player.

So, who do the Reds turn to for saves if Chapman is out? Broxton threw a good inning Monday, albeit, all fastballs from what I have read.

I'd say Hoover is the man unless the Reds swing a deal. Not likely. Maybe LeCure.

Almost any reliever can get 3 outs so it's not like the entire package unravels without a closer. Truth be known, I don't think Price much believes in the closer.

Still this is a guy who can pitch a shutdown inning almost at will. Not easy to replace.

Welp the news is Chapman had surgery earlier today on putting a plate near eye. He has a mild concussion. The Doctors have said that he is a very lucky man. Reds reporters asked if its possible he pitches this season, they said absolutely. Time Table is 6-8 weeks. My prediction is if everything goes right He will be back after All-star break. I think it will be a committee for closing job,But I agree with John. Hoover I think will eventually take over.

BTW this should tell you on how good Chappy is feeling, he was joking and laughing with new Reds catcher Pena early this morning. So hopefully our missile isn't out too long.

Damn...that's just fuckin' gnarly......I wish him all the best in his recovery.

GOODYEAR, Ariz.(3/20) -- Cincinnati Reds closer Aroldis Chapman is undergoing surgery to repair a broken bone above his left eye but has no other serious injuries after being hit in the face by a line drive in a spring training game.

Team doctor Timothy Kremchek said Chapman could begin throwing off a mound in six to eight weeks, a timetable that could get him back in games in late May. The left-hander with a fastball that has reached 105 mph hopefully will start exercising and throwing in a couple of weeks, Kremchek said.
The doctor called Chapman "a very lucky guy."

Kremchek said a metal plate will be inserted in the bone above his left eyebrow, with perhaps a bone graft as well, and will remain there permanently. Chapman has a very mild concussion but no other brain injury and no injury to his eye, Kremchek said.

"He's feeling better and he has some pain management. We're optimistic that he is going to be on the mend," Reds manager Bryan Price said after meeting with players Thursday morning at the team's spring training facility. "Obviously, we'll stay in touch. We will make sure we follow the process as we continue to get familiar with the injury itself. We will let him know how much support he has and that we care about him. Hopefully, we will see him here very soon."

Catcher Brayan Pena, a fellow Cuban and Chapman's close friend, was one of several Reds players who visited the injured pitcher Wednesday night and spoke to him on the phone Thursday morning.
"He was talking to me and we joked a lot," Pena said. "He just wanted to make sure for me to tell everybody that he appreciate so much the fans' prayers, especially our teammates, our coaching staff, everybody around, how much support and how much love he received and got from all of us."
Pena said Chapman was very happy when they spoke Thursday, "talking and joking. He was talking a lot about some Cuban jokes and that's good because that means his memory is still working pretty good.

Sometimes something better comes from the opportunity afforded by a disaster. What happens if whoever closes in Chapman's absence is just lights out, one of the SP in the rotation isnt, and Chapman comes back at the All-Star break...as a SP...that can't pitch enough innings in the rest of the season to have to be shut down before the playoffs ? It could happen. It might be the best thing ever happened.

How's that for optimism ?
